Meet our new student writers for this semester –members of the BS Development Communication Batch 2019.

This online platform showcases the initial writings of the freshmen BS Development Communication students enrolled in DEVC 11 (Introduction to media writing for development) UV for the Fist Semester, AY 2019-2020.

As part of the lecture class requirements, the students are tasked to write weekly entries on the topics assigned. The Weekly Writes is part of the course initiatives to let students practice writing on a more regular basis.

From August to December 2019, the students will be submitting 16 articles for Blog 6050 covering the following topics:

  • Week 1 (August 5-9)About the author presents a concise (2-3 paragraphs) profile about our students as a media writers. The entries discuss the students’ topics/fields of interest, skills, and/or aspirations. (Deadline: on/before September 30)
  • Week 2 (August 12-16) – For their second entry, our student writers were tasked to conduct a self-assessment in terms of their qualities and skills as a media writer.
  • Week 3 (August 19-23) – In Data gathering (Los Baños Community Directory) our student writers put into practice their observation, document search, and interview skills to gather essential information from key offices/organizations/agencies in Los Baños, Laguna. (Deadline: on/before September 30)
  • Week 4 (August 26-30) – For this week’s [Buhay Devcom: Lifehack Series #1 (Student Survival Kit), our student writers identify the must-have top five items/tools for development communication students. (Deadline: on/before September 30)
  • Week 5 (September 2-6) – This week marks the first month of our student writers as UP Los Baños BS Development Communication students. Buhay Devcom: Lessons from the first month in uni discusses the top five insights/learnings from the first four weeks of their stay in UPLB. (Deadline: on/before September 30)
  • Week 6 (September 9-13)Buhay Devcom: “development-oriented” unpacked presents the top 3 characteristics of a development-oriented topic/output as discussed by our development communicators-in-training. From articles, posters, video interviews with alumni and/upperclass devcom students, etc – our student writers take a closer look into what makes something development-oriented. (Deadline: on/before September 16)
  • Week 7 (September 16-20) – Our student writers cover the activities organized by Los Baños for the Bañamos Festival 2019. Through a wide range of content (news article, photo story, video feature), our student writers work in groups to showcase the highlights of this year’s Bañamos Festival. (Deadline: on/before September 23)
  • Week 8 (September 23-27) – For this week’s entry Buhay Devcom Lifehack Series #2: Surviving Devcom Exams, our student writers share five (5) tips on preparing for and/or surviving devcom exams. (Deadline: October 4, 11:59pm)
  • Week 9 (September 30-October 4) Portraits: UPCAT Stories (photo + 3-5 paragraphs profile) showcases the stories of examinees and their families during the 2020 UPCAT in UP Los Baños. (Deadline: October 11)
  • Week 10 (October 7-11)Portraits: 101st UPLB Loyalty Day (photo + 3-5 paragraphs profile [name, course, class]+key lessons learned from their stay in UPCA/UPLB) presents UPCA/UPLB alumni profiles and the key lessons they learned from the University. (Deadline: October 16)
  • Week 11 (October 14-18) – It’s the midterms and university students are consuming more caffeine and sugar to deal with the pressures and anxieties. So how do devcom students de-stress/unwind? (and when?) That’s what our student writers sought to answer with this week’s Buhay Devcom Lifehack Series #3: How to chill (Deadline: November 8, 2019) Individual written post OR Group video
  • Week 12 (October 21-25)Hometown. Our student writers introduce their hometowns to us in one-minute video. (Deadline: Nov. 15, 2019) Individual video
  • Week 13 (October 28-November 1)“Devcom?” Being asked about their course is one of the most challenging inquiries BS Development Communication freshmen students encounter –especially when they go back to their hometowns. This week, our student writers feature the top 3 most common questions about devcom (from family members and high school batchmates) AND the answers/responses from our student writers/ older devcom students. (Deadline: Nov. 22, 2019) Group video
  • Week 14 (November 4-8) Covering sports topics is this week’s challenge for our development communicators-in-training. In groups, the students will develop online content on the CDCiklaban sports fest (Nov 9 and 16 ) OR profiles of STRASSUC player/participants from devcom. Working in groups, the outputs this week will be packaged into audiovisual materials for posting in the UPLB Devcom Facebook Page. (Deadline: November 29)
  • Week 15 (November 11-15) This week, our media writers will work in groups to develop content about the DOST’s Science Explorer’s visit to UP Los Baños. The audiovisual materials developed will showcase our media writers’ “diskarte” in developing distinctive high-value content for an online audience. (Deadline: November 18)
  • Week 16 (November 18-22) – November 19 marks the annual unveiling of the Christmas decorations in the UPLB Gate, an event event Los Baños residents and UPLB students and staff look forward to at the end of the year. Our media writers will work in groups to develop online audiovisual content, covering the lighting ceremonies and related topics. (Deadline: November 22-29)
  • Week 17 (November 25-29) – For Week 17, our student media writers share the top five tips and/or pieces of advice that they wish they could give their old selves during the first day of classes to better prepare themselves for the semester. (Individual output: article (with photos)/AV material; Deadline: December 6, 2019)
  • Week 18 (December 2-6) – In their Week 2 entry, our media writers did a self-assessment on the qualities and skills of media writers. Now that we’re at the end of the semester, our student media writers take a look back their old ratings and share their updated self-ratings on the qualities and skills of a media writer for their Week 18 entry . Let’s see what things have changed –and what lessons they learned in their first semester as UPLB BS Development Communication students.
