Devcom has been quite interesting, upon learning that field works are inevitable, and that there are certain things or objects that is vital to every student taking devcom course. These tools are necessary since devcom is about the everyday things that we should know about, and what changes around them in all kinds of terms whether it may be a huge of an impact or a rather small one. Aside from that, being devcom students, being expose to numerous circumstances of surprise events will be a major part of being a devcom student, and every event must be covered, or if not, it must at least be known to the majority for it may bear a significance in information. These objects are: a smartphone, laptop, storage device/s and/or cloud storage, pen and papers, and powerbanks/battery pack or earphone with microphone. The listed tools are of significance due to their personal importance to me, however, they can too be a significance of importance to other people since most, if not all, are important for every student in the generation today.
A smartphone is now a basic necessity for all of the people living in the world, this device would hold one of the most valuable technological advancement of our time in our pockets, the internet. The internet holds so much information that can be use in almost every place that is possible, having said that, it is vital that the smartphone must have a stable internet connection either by cellular data or wifi access. More than that, a smartphone has one or two characteristic that is important for every devcom student and/or journalist to gather a data that is unplanned, a camera, and a voice recorder. This two characteristics are of significance since the camera, even if the quality is not on par with DSLR cameras, can capture or record the data in a small appliance, the reason being the cellphone being such a compact device. In addition, the same can be said with the voice recorder, we need not to have another device to record the important person speaking, the cellphone can achieve that since all smartphones have the ability to call, which normally includes a microphone.
Laptops are important, branding aside, since these devices are being used for inputing and editing the gathered data for publishing online. One could argue that a smartphone is enough on being used for editing and inputing the data, however, the laptops being a more powerful and capable in handling the data gathered to be edited in an easier way than that of using a smartphone. In addition, working or editing the data gathered in a smartphone could be an arduous task since they possess a limited amount of screen space, and laptops serves a screen large enough to edit data simultaneously. Multitasking is an important skills or aspects a devcom student must have, and with the aid of a laptop, one could multitask effectively than using a smartphone, which constantly occupies a task or an app individually. The smartphone would only apply a single app on the screen, with the exceptions are the phones that have the software to allow two apps working side by side, even then, the screen would be cramp to do anything more intensive.
Storage devices and/or cloud storage are already in our smartphones and laptops, however, extra storage devices could be beneficial to devcom students because data can come at an unspecified amount. Sometimes, these data are being stored in large file formats that can fill the storage capacity of a laptop and/or a smartphone easily, which is why extra storage devices are vital so that the data are being stored without sacrificing an aspect of the data itself. Ideally, it is more efficient buying a storage device with large amount of storage quantity or gigabytes. A one terabyte hard drive is enough to store data that are more heavy in terms of size. Additionally, some files and/or data are being stored online since some applications can be used on multiple platforms, and once the files and/or data is stored online, this can be accessed either on the phone, laptop, and/or desktop, whichever device would the devcom student used that is appropriate for the time and/or place.
The magical pen and paper, this is the original type of gathering data and information. There is a great sense of acquiring information by using the pen and paper, since in the most ideal of times, when an information is given, most students retain the given information when writing down or jotting down notes. The power of the pen and paper goes beyond what a smartphone or a laptop does, since these two are one of the best way to retrieve information at its purest form. A handwritten note can become more than just a note, it can be the source of the most accurate data since it cannot be altered once it has been written, albeit if writing with a pencil, it can be erased or altered. The point here is that using a pen and paper holds a significance in data gathering, and that this, for most of the students, is one of the most effective take on note takings in general.
And lastly, I will combine two important tools, powerbanks or portable battery and earphones as one, for I see them equally important and that not one outperforms the other. One could not be essential to the other by other students, however both still have significance as important tools to devcom students. These tools are ideal, in the case of earphones, to block out unwanted noice and to clearly hear the audio profiles. In the case of the use powerbank, the battery on our smartphones does not last throughout the day, and with that the use of powerbank to aid that problem is essential for devcom students.
