It was Thursday when my groupmates and I finally decided to do our community directory assignment. It was a good experience for me and I was very glad to meet the members of the barangay in the barangay hall. They all were very approachable and accommodating to us.
Our group used interviews as our primary method of data gathering. We used it the most because it was the most efficient for us. An interview is a flexible tool so we can easily make adjustments and variations according to the situation we’re in. It is also easier to attain the information we need because interview is a direct method of inquiry.
- Choose a data collection method that is efficient and comfortable for you.
There are different kinds of data gathering methods and there is a suitable one for each situation and for every person. Choosing one that is most effective and comfortable for you is key to attaining information that is accurate and useful. The kind of method that you use doesn’t only affect the quality of data you acquire but it is also a factor in having an easy data gathering process and experience.
- Always take notes.
Taking down notes is essential because you’ll never really know when you will need a particular piece of information. The practice of taking notes also improves one’s listening and comprehension skills.
- Be polite and approachable.
Your skills and knowledge can surely take you to places but being polite and respectful gives you endless possibilities. If you’re polite, you are more likely to achieve your objectives and you can provide the people you’re working with a pleasant experience. Being polite is significant especially in communicating with people. It is one of the most important characteristics that a person should have, and it matters in any place and situation. We should always treat people from different walks of life with the same respect and kindness. It doesn’t hurt to be nice, afterall.
- While conducting data collection, always keep your objectives in mind.
It is so easy to be distracted by a lot of things around you while conducting data collection. Reminding yourself of your objectives keeps you on track of what you know and what you need to know. It also helps in writing reliable and valid information.
- Never forget to express gratitude after an interview.
Be grateful to your interviewee and don’t forget to express it. Most people have busy schedules and hectic workloads, but they still make way to help you. Be appreciative of their time and presence.
