Starting a new life as a college student is challenging as it introduces you to a world that is far different from what we are accustom to. At first, it will be hard for us to adapt and immerse ourselves in the life and culture of the UPLB students, but along the way, we will learn, and we will create our routine.
As for me, here are the top five insight and learnings for my first four weeks stay in UPLB:
Do not be afraid to ask questions. As a freshman student, we always encounter problems in adapting to our new environment, however, one might experience ‘culture shock’ because UPLB is a home for diverse cultures. Hence, it is reasonable that we are clueless and in dire need of help in making our situation less difficult than it already is. The upper-class students experienced this too that is why they are very welcoming and helpful in matters like this. So, do not be afraid to ask questions because it is better to be informed than be ignorant of the circumstances that we are in.
Be prepared. Preparedness is a quality that everyone should have because it can help you overcome challenges that you unexpectedly encountered. It should embrace our mental, physical, and emotional capacities to maintain the balance between ourselves and our studies. Without this quality then things may get out of control, especially if we are exposed to continuous fieldwork exercises and surprise quizzes.
Create a schedule. Being a development communicator-in-training means that you should know the amount of workload that you will be doing in the next few years as it will be difficult to allocate our time to accomplish all the tasks in our courses. For this reason, one should create a schedule, in which he or she can work efficiently without worrying about the other deadlines that he or she needs to meet. Also, having a schedule helps you plan, hence, you are aware of the things that you need to do for a specific time.
Make time for your friends and family. Our life does not revolve around our studies only because we are not robots, we are not created to work forever. We are created to build relationships and strengthened our bonds with those people because they are the ones who help us maintain our balance. These people can be your helping hand whenever you need them, and they can comfort you in times of hardships, so spent time with them because shouldering your problems alone is not healthy.
Take time to rest. As a development communication student, we are always involving ourselves with other people to write something that will help bring awareness and influence on those people about the recent issues that concern us. Therefore, we are always working, seeking information, and developing an output out of it. For that reason, we sometimes forget to take care of ourselves and so, always remember to take time to rest or have leisure time to relax because it will also help you to never forget yourself and navigate yourself towards your goal.
