Admission in the University of the Philippines requires one to pass the UP College Admission Test, or more commonly known as UPCAT. Months before the scheduled dates of examination, students from all over the country were already busy preparing themselves for the test. It was indeed an awaited moment for incoming college students.
UPCAT 2020 was held last October 5-6, 2019. There were different testing centers located in the different parts of the Philippines, including here at University of the Philippines Los Baños. We interviewed two groups of examinees, asking them questions about their UPCAT stories and experiences. We asked them to rate from 1 to 10 how much do they want to be a UP student, and how confident are they that they will ace the exam. We also asked them about their preparations for the examination.
Christian, Ayessa, Krizza and Niña from Calamba Institute.
Asked about how much do they want to get into the university, they answered 9, 7, 8 and 10, respectively. They said that the quality of education in UP made them want to be students here. The facilities and way of teaching were also mentioned as reasons. They gave themselves a rating of 7 when asked about how confident are they that they will pass the exams. This is because they had a difficult time in answering the reading comprehension test part, as well as for the language proficiency. They said that they didn’t really prepared that hard for the exam. They only review their lessons if they have extra time.
Shek, Ceska, and Toni from Labas Senior High School, Sta. Rosa
These three gave themselves a rating of 8 when asked about how much do they want to get into the university. Toni explained that they didn’t gave a rating of 10 because of the fact that there are a lot of students like them who want to get into the university. However, they still recognized the high quality education offered by UP. Asked about how confident are they that they will pass the exam, they answered 4, 5, and 6, respectively. They admit that the exam was not that difficult if only you will review and recall the topics discussed in the past. The topics included in the exam were familiar to them, but they do not know how to come up to the answer. They also didn’t prepare so much for the exam. They just review on their free time using downloaded reviewers from twitter and facebook. They also shared that their most unforgettable part is during the application process for the exam. The bond that they have made during this time became one of those enjoyable moments in their lives.
