Last October 12, 2019 was my first time to witness the celebration of UPLB Loyalty Day. It was a festive event wherein alumni were invited to join the parade.
I was fortunate enough to interview one of the UPLB alumni of Batch 74. Her name is Ms. Emiliana San Jose Mayor. Her undergraduate course is formerly called BS Home Technology which is now more known as Human Ecology.
When I asked her about the lessons or values that she learned in her stay in UP, these were her answers:
- Camaraderie
One thing that she loved about UP is its distinct camaraderie spirit. During her time, everyone seems to be good acquaintances. Regardless of courses and colleges, she felt like UPLB community is a big family.
- Freedom
She remembered her college days where even if she wears bakya, no one would judge her for it. Everybody respects each other’s preferences and they are free to voice out their opinions and stands on certain issues. Rallies or campus mobilization became prevalent in her time.
- Commitment
As an Iskolar ng Bayan, she always carry with her the aspirations of the university. She put to heart the essence of Honor and Excellence and she still carries these values up to now.
- Generalist
She learned the importance of knowing many things and not boxing oneself in a single perspective. One must first see both sides of the coin before creating a conclusion. She added that you should not limit yourself from finding opportunities to learn.
- Be grounded
When you are in the fieldwork, people will not look at you as UP graduate, your attitude will be the one that would matter most. You should never look at yourself as someone superior. Humility is something that you should carry within you when you enter the real world. You should be able to work with different kinds of people and be exposed to unfamiliar situations. Immerse yourself with the community and you’ll realize the essence of being an Isko.
