In UP, every week is “hell week”. Well, university life is very far from being equated with “easy”. More so, the standard we aim to meet inside and outside the university is not something we can achieve in one seating.
As a student, I am honestly poor when it comes to time management. However, I always make sure to provide time for myself in order to prevent the posssiblity of burn out. Here are the top five things I usually do before and after exams:
1. Physical and emotional rest
-I prepare my body especially my mind and heart by spending time alone and meditating on my workload. I usually monitor my status and reflect on the things I missed out so I’ll know where to work harder. I also celebrate my small victories and use them as motivation. Moreover, enough sleep and a healthy diet are highly essential because it helps us endure the physical and mental stress brought about by acads.
After exams, I still take some time alone regardless of what the results are. I spend it on self-reflection and motivation. More importantly, I get back the amount of sleep I lost (even though I never really get enough).
2. Satisfying my cravings
-Before exams, caffeine and sugar dominate my blood stream. As a coffee lover and someone who has a sweet tooth, a day does not pass by without me drinking coffee or eating sweets. When it comes to coffee, I prefer pure instead of the instant one because it really keeps me awake and energized especially when I need to review and finish paperworks. Sweets especially chocolates on the other hand, serve as my reward for myself. Besides, they say that chocolates (especially dark chocolate) is good for the brain.
3. Giving myself time to do the things I love.
-Netflix, books, social media. These are just some of the things I spend most of my free time on. So before and after a busy week, I delve on to entertaining myself through watching movies and series, reading books and getting updates from social media.
4. Talking to my support team.
-Living far away from home is extremely hard especially when circumstances get rough. However, I am blessed to have a strong and loving support system who helps me keep going. My family and friends never fail to motivate me, critique me and celebrate with me on my small victories.
5. Recharging in His abundant grace.
-Lastly, my top secret is not a brand of coffee or a fancy highlighter I use for my notes. Mine is the peace and provision only the Lord can give. It reminds me of my realities and my dreams. This faith, no matter how inconsistent it is in terms of intensity keeps me clinging to the Source. This Source never runs out. This Source has never failed me yet. And this is what I will keep holding on to for the rest of my stay here.
The first sem is almost over. Yet the stress of what is yet to come is already kicking in. However, our lives do not only revolve on the university. What matters is how we balance the time we have for our responsibilities and our physical, mental and emotional health. Remember, we cannot pour from an empty cup.
This is how I chill. This is how I get ready. This is how I fight.
