Evaluated. Cultivated.

Being able to survive the first semester here in UPLB is my biggest achievement for this year so far. I’ve learned so many things and discovered so much about myself and my capabilities as well. All the tasks our professors gave us taught me numerous life-changing lessons which I know helped me improve my qualities and skills, not just as a media writer, but also as a person.

With this, I’ve evaluated myself once again to see how much I’ve grown so far. Below are my self-assessment after one semester here in UPLB:

The results clearly show that after my four-month struggle here in the university, I was able to improve myself and my skills as well. With that, I can say that UPLB had me well cultivated.

However, this is just the beginning. There’s still a series of semesters I will have to face. But despite all of it, I know very well that my version 2.0 will be able to ace them all.

One semester down, more to go! Padayon CDC! 🌻

Just a heads up

What’s up?

Today marks a very special day. This is the day you’ve long been waiting for – to enter and finally study in your dream school. Are you ready to face this new journey? Well, you better be. This is going to be a LONG roller coaster ride. So sit back and make sure to read some of my advices before you end up crying your eyes out (as I have been doing for the past months).

BE READY

As what I have mentioned earlier, you better be ready – ready to face all the challenges UP has prepared for you. This is going to be a tough ride. You’ll experience series of mental and emotional breakdowns. But don’t worry, this is just the beginning, all you need is to be ready and I assure you that you’ll be able to get through this semester, still breathing.

DO NOT GIVE UP

In accordance to my first advice, you will need to keep in mind to never give up easily on the tasks assigned to you. Yes, it will be hard; it will cause you headaches for weeks; it will seem impossible to accomplish; but as long as you do not give up on them, I’m sure that you can ace and finish them on time.

STOP PROCRASTINATING

Of course, in order to finish your tasks on time, you will need to remember to stop procrastinating. I know this is one of the things you’re best at, but let me tell you that this can also be the reason for you to be the worst in doing the things you used to be good at. I assure you, procrastinating will do no good if you want to get that high mark. Remember to use your time wisely and you’ll end up having more free time than what I have now.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE

Just a heads up, having a mental or emotional breakdown will be a normal thing to you once the semester starts. But always keep in mind that it is completely okay to do so. Go cry your eyes out until you feel fine. You’ll need not to worry because your family and friends will have your back. Remember that in every step of the way, there will be people beside you, ready to fight  with you through the battles you will be facing.

ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST

Last but not the least, I would like to remind you to always do your best. This way, you will not end up having regrets which I know is your biggest pet peeve. Make sure to give your all whenever there will be tasks assigned to you even if it seems impossible to achieve. Just like what you always say, it’s better to fail than to regret.

I hope you do not get pressured upon reading this (hehe) because this will be worth it the end. Just enjoy your stay in the university and always be the best version of yourself!

Love,

Angel

Just a heads up, these are the people who will always have your back through all the challenges you will be facing this coming first semester. #OneCD2 💖

Pasko sa Elbi

Opening numerous presents under the Christmas tree, singing different songs with my family, and never failing to complete the Simbang Gabi – indeed, Christmas is one of the holidays I’ve always been waiting for ever since I was a kid.

That’s why attending this year’s Pasko sa Elbi thrilled me a lot. Being able to witness it with my friends was definitely one of the most memorable moments I will treasure, despite the stress it caused us while trying to document it. (LOL)

Come with me and together, let’s witness the beauty of this year’s Pasko sa Elbi!

DEVCOMination

Having to explain the meaning of Development Communication to our family and friends is definitely one of the challenges we’ve been experiencing since we entered the university.

Come and join us on a game unraveling how random people see DevCom.

Kalan at Banga: Welcome to Calamba!

Legend says that at about the turn of 16th century, two Spanish soldiers came to a village by the shore of Laguna de Bay. Attracted by the vast plain with verdant greeneries that spread up to a majestic mountain, the strangers became curious to learn the name of the place. Soon there came a native young lady carrying an earthen jar by her waist. Seizing the opportunity, the two soldiers inquired in Spanish from the young lady the name of the place.

Frightened with the sight of white strangers in colorful uniforms, the native damsel got confused. Thinking that the soldiers were asking what she was carrying, she answered nervously “Kalamba…Kalamba..” referring to the earthen jar she was clasping by her waist.

Since then the small village on a vast plain close to Laguna de Bay has been known by the name of Kalamba which is now known as the City of Calamba.

Come and take a look as I showcase one of the historical places in Laguna, our National Hero’s hometown, the City of Calamba!

LET US NOT WASTE TIME & TAKE A REST.

Upon saying this statement out loud, my block mates laughed so hard that they didn’t notice how serious I am with it.

Loads of quizzes/exams had already passed and here I am, still breaking down every single time I get to face the fact of somewhat failing in them even though I did study hard for that certain quiz/exam.

With all that being said, there is something which I am constantly doing and is passionate about every time those tasks are already over.

CHILLING.

For me, chilling means having to take a breather after long hours of hard work. Taking small breaks mean so much to me since my brain is much more able to function well whenever I get to have small break between my study sessions.

Below are my top two ways of chilling:

  • Eat

Eating after a stressful day in academics is one of my necessities. This way, I feel like I get to bring back all the energies I’ve lost during the review sessions I’ve done.

  • Sleep

As someone who’s very well-known at sleeping, this couldn’t be missing in my ways of chilling. Most of the time, my way of taking a breather is only by laying down in my bed, doing nothing, until I fall asleep. For me, this is basically the best way to chill for sleeping relaxes your body as well as your mind away from all the stress you have to overcome.

However, chilling should only be done once you’ve already accomplished some of your tasks for it can also mean that you are more likely to procrastinate that way.

“UP-Hell-bi”

This is Kristine Irish G. de Claro, a 26 year old alumna of the University of the Philippines Los Banos. She entered the university on 2009, took BS Industrial Engineering and graduated on 2015.

Her 6-year stay in the university was full of ups and downs making her learn a lot of life-changing lessons to share to the world.

Upon asking her the key lessons she learned in her stay in the university, she highlighted this:

“The oblation means offering yourself to and serving the nation, and that honor comes before excellence in any situation. And that the university got the ‘UP-Hell-bi’ nickname for a reason, it’s a training ground for the real world.”

Being a top performing student on high school, she did not expect to fail in certain subjects which caused her delay.

Her experiences taught her to stay strong through all her challenges in life, specially on her university life. Despite all the disappointments she encountered in the university, she kept her faith and trusted the process, leaving the current students of UPLB a message to engrave in their hearts and minds.

“Always remember that you are not an Iskolar ng Bayan, instead, you are an Iskolar para sa Bayan, and that being one is a privilege, so don’t get too cocky. Spark a change when you have the chance.”

She also highlighted that it’s okay to pause but never quit.

Breaking down on the nearest available waiting shed won’t solicit judgmental stares from fellow iskos, it’s okay to do it when you have to. You can always rely on good friends when you hit rock bottom and seek help.

You don’t have be too hard and critical of yourself.

Most importantly, never stop learning.

Para sa bayan

Every year, thousands of students from different places gather at UPLB to take the very famous University of the Philippines College Admission Test, also known as, UPCAT. 7,800 aspirants took the UPCAT 2020 in hopes of becoming a future Iskolar ng Bayan.

As early as 5 am, together with the aspirants and their families, I started roaming around UPLB to look for students which I can interview for this write up. Seeing how long lines started to build up made me feel very nostalgic. Two years ago, I was also one of them; a student hoping to enter her dream university. Now, I am already here, living my dream.

As I walk and take pictures of the event, I saw my former schoolmate together with her friend waiting in line in front of the CAS Annex 2 building. Without second thoughts, I immediately approached them.

This is Mary Jazzelle M. Magpantay, an 18 year old student of Malayan Colleges Laguna. She was my former schoolmate back when I was still in junior high school. She aims to be a Chemical Engineer someday.

According to her, she wants to enter the university for a reason that this is one of the best schools in the Philippines and it has no tuition fee. However, she was not able to attend review centers so all she did was to study all by herself in preparation for the exam.

“Gabi-gabi ko pong pinagpepray and sinusurrender sa Kanya ang lahat. Dahil po ron naisip ko po na, if UP is for me, God will give it to me po. If not, I know naman po na may better plan siya sa’kin.” This is her last statement before they entered the building.

Jazzelle was accompanied by her family on the day of the exam. Full of support, her mother told me that no matter what the results will be, she’d still be proud of her daughter for doing her best.

After the exam, I went back to the campus to interview her friend regarding her experience .

This is Sarah Lynn Cedeño, a 17 year old student of St. John Colleges in Calamba. She chose Agribusiness Management as her first choice in the UPCAT since this is the only business-related program that interests her in UPLB.

Unlike Jazzelle, Sarah attended review centers in preparation for the exam. Also, she wasn’t accompanied by anyone in her family since they have work to go to. However, she stated that she still felt their utmost support nonetheless.

Regarding her experience, she said that the only challenged she faced during the exam was the mix-up of information and confusion because of the time pressure which made her end up with educated guesses.

“Every hula ko po sinasabi ko nalang na ‘Lord, ikaw na pong bahala sa’kin’” she stated.

UPCAT definitely is a big deal for those who badly want to enter the university. However, this should not be the basis of one’s intelligence.

Before they head back home, I told them that I am looking forward to see them together next year in UPLB, fighting for the battle college will bring. And together, we will uphold honor and excellence. Para sa bayan. Para sa bayan!
