DevCom ColSec bags CDCiklaban Badminton tilt

Armed with his athletic skills, the College of Development Communication (CDC) College Secretary Edmund Centeno dominated the finals match of badminton singles, 2-0, against Reinier Gaspar in the 2019 CDCiklaban Sportsfest held at Baker Hall, University of the Philippines Los Baños on November 9 and 16.

Centeno beat Gaspar through a statement win of 21-7, 21-11 to finish the tournament with an unbeaten record.

Before going to the finals, both players need to sweep their opponents through a stepladder format, defeating three players each before qualifying in the battle for the gold.

Aside from this, Centeno also paired up with Mark Angelo Baccay as they also claim the championship title in the badminton doubles.

CDCiklaban is a sports festival organized by the CDC Student Council that aims to provide opportunities for individual development through various activities, increase social contacts, growth of lasting friendships and recreation for individuals, regardless of their skill ability.

Repairs

On the second week of our weekly writes, I wrote a blog about my qualities and skills as a media writer entitled, ‘Flaws’. For my past four months in development communication, I can say that my qualities and skills improved, but not all of my flaws went away immediately. I am still adjusting to the college life and I am glad that I had some improvements because of devcom. I am near to give up, but I will still do my best.

Some of my qualities shifted higher, and the others remained the same. Here are my qualities before and after the semester:

  1. Curious or inquisitive – 2 to 1
  2. Intelligent – 3 to 2
  3. Industrious – 2 to 1.75
  4. Resourceful – 2 to 1.75
  5. Persevering – 2, remained the same
  6. Imaginative – 1, remained the same
  7. Puts a premium on accuracy and truth – 2 to 1
  8. Loves to read – 1, remained the same
  9. Interested in and loves people – 1, remained the same
  10. Service- oriented – 2 to 1.5

My skills, on the other hand, shifted higher and some remained the same as well. Here are my skills before and after the semester:

  1. Gathering data – 2 to 1
  2. Validating and clarifying information – 2 to 1
  3. Organizing information – 2 to 1.5
  4. Writing clearly and effectively – 2 to 1.5
  5. Proficiency in the operation of communication tools/ devices – 3 to 2

Not a lot has changed, I still have flaws, but as what I have said on my ‘Flaws’ blog, it just takes a little repair, and we are good to go.

What would I tell Aubrey?

Dr. strange used the time stone to peak through the future and go back in time. He also used it to see the 14, 000, 605 possible outcomes of their conflict with Thanos. What if I had the time stone? I would probably go back in time to talk to my first semester self.

I’d tell first semester Aubrey to focus. That’s what I think that I’ve lacked on the first semester. I have not given enough focus on my academics because I was probably overwhelmed with the college life.

Second is, review as early as possible. I do not have the superpowers to memorize a whole lecture in one night.  Reviewing earlier will help me to learn the lessons easily because I would have more time to review.

I should start not cramming next semester.

The third thing that I would tell first-sem-Aubrey is not to cram. For the love of your grades, just don’t. Yes, it may be true that cramming may cause some adrenaline rush, making your brain boost more thoughts/ creativities, but it is always better to do your things ahead of the due.

Unfortunately, I do not have the time stone. So, it will be a battle between me and the present and learn my mistakes from the past to improve my future in my academics.

Kaway Tagkawayan!

Tagkawayan is a first class municipality from southern Quezon province and is also one of the top ten municipalities in the said province. Our town is rich in natural resources, especially seafoods such as shrimps, fishes and crabs. Tagkawayan is a haven for hidden tourist destinations. It is known in Quezon for its magnificent beaches, falls, and rivers. Mataas na Bato is one of the most historical spots, where it is believed that aetas used to climb the Mataas na Bato and wave a long bamboo pole with a white tag to invite near communities to join their feast, thus, Kaway Tagkawayan.

Take a Chill Pill

Take a chill pill!

College is not what we have expected as it would be. It is not all rainbows and sunshine like what we have watched on televisions. You don’t get to have musical numbers and confetti when you walk down the hallways. What you’d get, most probably, are stressful days, eyebags, failing exams/ quizzes (I hope not), and a lot of requirements to do. Most students would burn themselves with schoolworks, and it is an unhealthy thing to do. Sometimes we forget how to loosen up and chill for a moment. For what it’s worth, this is definitely one of the very few things that I am actually good at—chilling.

How do I chill?

1. Sleep.

We know that sleeping is kind of a terrible idea if we have a lot of things to do. We might sleep over our requirements and wake up the next day accomplishing nothing. Sleeping is important. In order to sleep properly, we must respect our body clocks and not overhaul ourselves with work by doing our requirements as early as possible. It also relaxes our bodies and we let our bodies repair itself if we sleep at the right time.

2. Go for a walk.

I have been walking for my entire life because my previous schools were near our house, but let me tell you this, walking, for me, is very relaxing (only if you are not in rush). It helps me think and clear my mind, plus, it is also a good exercise.

3. Hydrate.

For the love of your kidneys, hydrate. Drinking water is very important and it is also refreshing. It will not only satisfy your thirst, but it will also be a great help for your body. Limit yourself from drinking soft drinks and other colored beverages, because yes, you will really chill, but your organs need to chill as well. If you do not want plain water, I highly recommend lemonades, calamansi/ dalandan juices, and my favorite one, tea.

4. Eat.

We all know, and we all do this. Eating is as essential as hydrating, but we also need to be mindful of what we consume. Eating is relaxing, however, avoid eating unhealthy foods like junk foods. Let us have a chill and healthy life.

5. Listen to music.

As a person who loves music, listening to it really chills me out. It calms my nerves and helps me focus on whatever I do. This is my ultimate stress reliever. It is nice to sing or dance along the music you are listening to.

6. Write or scribble stuff down.

It is also therapeutic to write or draw something. It unleashes your creative mind while not actually pressuring yourself to do it. It is also a good avenue to release your emotions and feelings.

7. Watch movies or series.

I love watching movies and series. It helps me forget what I am stressing about for a while. I highly recommend watching The Killer Bride, a local series, Riverdale, a CW series, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, an NBC series. I also love watching cartoons like Star vs the Forces of Evil, a Disney Cartoon Series, Cartoon Network’s We Bare Bears, Pendelton Ward’s Adventure Time, and Rebecca Sugar’s Steven Universe.

8. Be with people you love.

Sometimes what we really need is to be with the people we care about, and the people who care about us. This may be our families, friends, and other loved ones. if they are not ith you at the moment, you can always call or just chat them. It is always soothing to talk with them after a long day of exams.

9. Go to your happy place.

Happy places may or may not be where you are right now. If it is, then go and just feel the surroundings talking to you. If not, find a new one and you will eventually find yourself going back frequently. Your happy place can be anywhere—as long as you can relax, meditate, and talk to yourself.
