DevCom is the NEW THING!

As students taking BS Development Communication in University of the Philippines Los Baños, many will approach and ask, “What is DevCom?,” “Is it like MassCom, but with a heart?,” or “What jobs/opportunities will you get from taking DevCom course?” At first, we have no idea what to say. After weeks studying, we now have answers to those questions. Here is a video introducing Development Communication and the top three questions answered by BS DevCom freshmen students.

Refresh

I started as a shy development-communicator-in-training. I was never really confident about my skills. But my mistake back then was never really believing in what I’m capable of which led to settling to the bare minimum I could do. After a whole semester in the College of Development Communication, I have gained a lot of lessons that I could surely use throughout my DevCom journey.

Being a development communicator needs to get out of their comfort zone. How are we going to be able to help and reach out for others when we let our fears hinder us from flying high?

Before, I gave myself (2) to almost all of the qualities such as: curious, imaginative, loves to read, and the others. However I gave (1) to qualities such as persevering and industriousness, because I knew to myself that struggles never hindered me from pushing harder and aiming higher. The quality I struggled with the most is resourcefulness. I couldn’t approach people and make connections because of my lack of confidence and drive in exhausting all the possible sources.

I’ve learned to be more resourceful by being curious and inquisitive when it comes to data gathering. Engaging with people will make it a lot easier for the data gathering process. I tried stepping out from my safe space and tried approaching people. Data gathering being the backbone of the content a writer would be making, is a very vital process. With that, one semester has taught me to give importance to this process and step up my game in exhausting sources of information.

In the skills of a media writer what I struggled the most with are data gathering, validating information and writing clearly and effectively which with (2) being its rating. Among the skills, It’s hard for me to write clearly and effectively. As a creative writer, I had a difficult time simplifying ideas and being direct to the point.

With the help of the lab exercises which helped us greatly in becoming news writers, I learned how it really is important to write clearly. Moreover, it made me realize how hard it is to write clear sentences for the audience. I still couldn’t give a (1) rating to this skill, as well as the other ones because I know I could improve more as I continue my DevCom joruney.

The whole semester has been tough. It was my first time in journalism. There were days that I felt like giving up the dream because of my lack of confidence. However, if I stop then I surely couldn’t make it. Thus, this semester made me tougher and stronger when it comes to facing new challenges. There will surely be a lot of road blocks ahead, but that shouldn’t stop you from improving and working harder.

Should’ve

The semester’s about to end. Who would’ve thought we’d get this far? Looking back to all the ups and downs for the whole semester, it made me realize a lot of things. The journey ahead is still uncertain, but with all that I’ve experienced this semester, I know I can still stand up and keep on fighting until I reach my goal.

As a freshie, the hardest part is facing a lot of new phases in college. New friends, new priorities, and a new learning environment. Looking back, I may have regrets on what I should’ve done at the first days of being an iskolar ng bayan.

With that, here are five tips to my old self about what I should’ve tried before

Smiling won’t hurt!

I know it’s hard to meet new people and find new friends but smiling won’t hurt! Try to socialize and get to know new people who would make your first semester or even the your whole university life, special.

FUEL YOUR PASSION

Always fuel your passion and stay inspired in doing your craft. Things may be a little rough at some times, however, with a clear vision and passion, it will surely pay off in the end.

believe in yourself

Be your number 1 fan! Who would trust you if you couldn’t even believe in your own capabilities? Remove all the doubts and fears. It all starts with you, and all will follow.

GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE

It’s never wrong to step out of your comfort zone. As you start your college journey, a new chapter will begin. Thus, try something you’d be able to proud of. Make friends, attend different activities, stay curious.

breathe it all out

Rest is important. Give yourself time to think and breathe from everything. Clear your mind and soul. It’s okay to cry it all out. What’s important is the realization and drive that pushes you to do better and continue fighting.

Wow, Cabuyao!

In my 18 years of existence, the city of Cabuyao in the province of Laguna has been my home.

Cabuyao, Laguna was recognized as the country’s richest municipality before. The known cities such as Calamba, Santa Rosa, and Biñan were once part of the known town, ‘Tabuko’. Tabuko was discovered by Franciscans back then while they were exploring around Lake Ba-i or presently known as Laguna de Bay. Throughout the years, it was then named after an abundant tree in the town which is a citrus tree commonly used as the local natives’ shampoo. Thus, they called it ‘Kabuyaw’.

Tara na at tuklasin ang kayamanang taglay ng kasaysayan!

Wow, Cabuyao!

Calm Before The Storm

We’re almost there, a few little steps more and we’re finally getting the bread! They say hard work pays off. All those sleepless nights, countless cups of coffee you’ve consumed and the extra layers of dark circles under your eyes will all be worth it. College life is really testing our patience, emotional strength, mental stability and even our physical health. With that, it’s not bad to take in a breath of fresh air and exhale all the stress and negativities. Reward yourself from time to time and have a break from the exhausting environment.

Here are five of my effective distressing mechanisms that you could also try:

Surround yourself with positive and genuine people.

This is one of my best coping mechanisms whenever I’m feeling stressed and demotivated. It may seem like it’s already a given resort because we already spend time with our friends at most times. However, the feeling of being around with people who genuinely cares and brings positivity in you is life-changing. One of the best feelings in the world is knowing that there are people who are willing to listen and validate every single emotion you have.

Sleep is not for the weak!

It really is the best escape from reality. Relax and let your mind rest for a while. Always keep in mind that having enough time of sleep or even taking naps are already a huge help in relieving your worrying heart and mind. After a long day, make sure you give yourself enough time to close your eyes and escape the tiring reality even just for a while.

Music heals your soul

As a person who really loves music, this is an effective way to shake the stress away. Listening to my favorite songs, singing along, and even swaying with the rhythm eases the exhaustion from a long tiring week of quizzes, discussions, and exams. It is true that through music, you could express and be able to relate to the art of its harmonies and lyrics. Just sing it all out and let your mind and soul rest and calm down with the beat.

Happy tummy, happy soul

This is my favorite coping mechanism among all the others. Eat the stress out, sis! Reward yourself from time to time. You survived a surprise quiz? Get and grab delicious treats. After consecutive sleepless nights because of exams? No one’s stopping you from eating in your go-to restaurant. A hardworking college students deserves nothing but a delicious meal that would definitely satisfy their drained minds and hungry stomachs.

Breathe

Give yourself enough time to think and reflect about what’s happening around you or even within you. It’s important to have a healthy relationship with yourself as you try to look back and find more motivation to keep going in every battle you’re about to face in the university. Being alone doesn’t automatically equate to feeling lonely. It is the time to let that brave soul rest for a while, thus, tomorrow’s another battle to surpass.

There will always be the calm before the storm. It is important to be mentally and emotionally prepared. Prioritizing your well-being will make it easier for you to face the future battles. Laban lang kapwa isko/iska!

DevCom Through The Years: A Process

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1-f07B783z23LWLBR67ooaEBmheHXyd5L

The 101st Loyalty Day of the University of the Philippines, Los Banos, was celebrated the whole week long from October 7 – 12, 2019. This annual celebration is specifically celebrated during the October 10th of each year, wherein it commemorates the spirit of volunteerism in the heart of the UPLB students. This year’s celebration was a long week full of events that have radiated positivity around the campus.

However, there’s this one event that truly captured my heart. The event was the Alumni Awardees’ Talk: Speaking of DevCom held at the College of Development Communication Lecture Halls 1 and 2. I was so intrigued and excited about the event that I actually volunteered as part of the stage committee.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1UuW0lnSU_NTP4xcOnNWsE-N2bEI5ysDW

Throughout the event, I was able to communicate with the speakers and even recognized a familiar person who was very influential for me and my little brother. Ma’am Maria Veronica Quintana ̶ Arioder, the recipient of the Alumna Educational Leadership.

Ma’am Veronica currently leads a school wherein she assured the topmost priority is her students’ developed skills in reading. She emphasized how reading could really bring you to places. Some people may not have a heart for this activity, however, we can all learn to love this. My brother who is currently home – schooled in The Learning Place, Los Baños Laguna, is a proof of how Ma’am Veronica really handles her school well.

The most inspiring key point of her talk was how she strived for something she really wanted. Development Communication may be a blurry path at first, but as the years passed by, you will definitely appreciate the littlest and biggest things that devcom teaches you. More than the theories, the lessons learned from actual experiences outside a formal setting of a classroom are the most important knowledge gained.

The vent was truly inspiring because it gave me that pat on the back that someday, everything will fall into place. There’s so much more in development communication that we can still explore. The variety of the awardees’ stories just shows that we all have our different battles and stories. We are the players of our own game and it is in our hands whether we let the game play us or we control how our lives would turn out.

Padayon, Future Isko/Iska!

A year has already passed, the much-awaited judgment day has finally come –University of the Philippines Admission Test (UPCAT) will be held once again. Aspiring iskolars ng bayan will be facing their first battle in the university.

UPCAT 2019 was held last October 7 – 8, 2019 among the different campuses of University of the Philippines. Just like the past examination schedules, it was divided into four batches ̶ two sets per day.

Covering this event brought back waves of memories. The nostalgic intense atmosphere has been felt around the campus of UPLB. Supportive relatives, sweaty palms, and the aspiring UPCAT takers filled the whole university. You could see worried faces all around, and parents patiently waiting and whispering their sincerest prayers.

After the first batch of examinees, I was able to interview a student from Colegio de San Juan de Letran. Despite the pressure and exhaustion, she was still kind enough to answer my questions.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Rdq9TzCHGkjUUNVWryjcOdyc–c2T9Ni

Isaiah May Bautista Aguilar is an aspiring 18 – year old from the City of Cabuyao, Laguna. She mentioned that studying in the university was never her dream, it was her father’s. Nevertheless, she’s very hopeful that she would pass and be able to study in the said university. Unlike others who usually invest in reviewing centers, she self-studied instead by buying a book online. Since July, she makes sure to allot an hour or two in studying. Her father, being supportive, would even play mini-quizzes with her containing the possible questions that may appear.

Her take in the ‘Anong UPCAT story mo?’ is quite different. Having just three hours of sleep, she felt a little bit sick while answering the examination. However the twist in here was, because of her unwell condition, she fell asleep while taking the math examination. She even stated that it was the best 20 – minute nap in her life.

Despite the pressure and the given fact that UPCAT is not your typical entrance examination test, this made her persevere more to study in other upcoming College Entrance Examinations.

“If it’s His will, He will give me a chance to be an Iska.”, she said.

Isaiah Mae Aguilar

Countless prayers and petitions, and all those efforts made in preparing for the UPCAT will be worth it once you’ve seen your name on that list.

Hintay lang, future isko/iska! Ano man ang resulta, lalaban para sa bayan!
