Why do I write? Ep. 2

Before, I only write to voice out my feelings that I cannot speak out. I write down everything to express the emotions kept for a long time. However, I have learned that more than that, writing serves a greater purpose. It is an avenue to connect with the people and hear them.  This class taught me that here in Devcom, aside from having countless opportunities, we are essential to the development in the community by practicing participatory communication within the community and among the locals.

However, it does not end with the idea of serving the people. It requires both the mind and the heart that are willing to serve. It needs the mind that opens for communication that can think of the most appropriate and best solution regarding the community’s issue. While, there is still the compassionate heart that touches the lives of the marginalized.

So, WHAT MAKES me a GOOD WRITER?

I have no proper training in writing, in whatever kinds and types of writing. I am more fond of reading; I have enjoyed reading stories of success, criminal cases, investigative documentaries, and such. But when it comes to writing, I could still say that I have so much to learn. I need to learn more. And through this class, I have gained a lot of knowledge and information from the successful individuals who chose Devcom as their molders.

At the end of this semester, I have realized that I am more

Curious about discovering things I am unfamiliar with; I want to know them firsthand and be more adventurous and riskier in a sense that these would lead me to more learning and experiences.

Intelligent, in a way that I am more critical with the information that the media is serving me. I have learned the importance of ‘fact checking’ and the triangular check to distinguish the credible source and the accurate information that different platforms produced.

Industrious and Resourceful, since a media writer has to cover a particular event that we experienced most of the time. There is always a deadline that must be met regardless of the availability of the persons involved and the event that you want to feature.

Persevere, to stand after the series of rejections, discouragement and disappointments, mostly within my own self. There has to be perseverance to continue the journey despite the challenges and difficulties that this life has giving.

Imaginative that basically was shown on the Devc 11 exercises which asked us all to be more creative when producing materials for media writing.

Prioritizing the accuracy and truth for I have learned that as media writers, we should not be seen only as skilled professionals but also as ethical in the type of journalism that we serve the public. I have memorized one from the Journalists’ Code of Ethics, that I shall not commit any act of plagiarism. I shall sustain the accuracy of every article that I will publish.

Fond of Reading since it is indeed helpful to learn more about the writing practices, sentence construction, and many more that would help me improve my skills.

Interested in and loves people because Devc 10 taught me that this program is for the people, especially to the marginalized. I was inspired to know more about the people and how I could help them through this degree program as I proceed to higher Devcom courses.

Service-oriented, right now that it is clearer to me the essence of being part of this community. This college has taught me a lot about viewing other people’s lives, as well as understanding their situation in a deeper sense, and using communication for a greater purpose of reaching development.

On the other hand, for the following skills required for a media writer:

Gathering data – 2

Validating and clarifying information – 2

Organizing information – 2

Writing clearly and effectively – 2

Proficiency in the operation of communication tools/devices -2

It is not bad, but rather a good start to end this semester and be prepared for more semesters coming. It indicates the need for learning to be more suitable to be part of this community.

NOTED!

These are the notes to remember for another semester that is coming. These are the things that I should have used/done efficiently before, but I was lacking. And it is better to reflect to avoid another mistake and be wiser the second time.

A planner is a life-saver

Life duties would be somehow manageable if I had a planner. I was not aware that I would be of need of a planner since I am used to remembering my schedule. But it would not work here in UP. Everyone has tons of obligations that he/she should fulfill later on. And, it has to meet the deadline or else, the work would be less than what you think is its worth. In other words, to avoid missed activities and such, remember to use a planner. It does not mean that you only have to use it, but the more important is, you have done your work promptly through your well-planned and organized schedule.

Finish the work first before the reward

In most cases, we tend to tell ourselves that for us to work well, we first need motivation. It is something that would freshen us up just like watching our favorite TV series, before taking a moment to outline the paper that is to be submitted. And because of that constant alibi, we are always on the edge of cramming. Instead of already revising the work, it would only be the time that you will be thinking of how to start it. It is the habit that we should take focus on to be changed. More time and space create more productive work.

Study when it’s time to study

I would suggest that if you’re studying for exams, you should avoid taking another task at the same time. It would not be working the way you think it works. Multitasking would eat much time since you have no focus on either task. In that way, instead of working faster for efficiency, you are then consuming more time to a lesser fruitful.

Grab every incentive

It means more incentives, more chances of pulling your grades up, and more additional outdoor learning. Try to attend every activity as much as possible. There’s always good karma that awaits you, after all. It’s a win-win situation. You have gain learning and experiences outside the four corners of the room, you have met professionals aside from your professors, and you have extra credit for attending. It serves as the door for more opportunities that both the college and university will provide for you to grow up and be more ready for the real-life outside the campus.

Stay motivated

Wake up motivated and end your day motivated as well. It is helpful to have the motivation to strive harder and work best every time. It ignites your capability and ability as a person. It drives you to do more and explore things that you’re not comfortable with to better assess yourself. It makes you optimistic. It keeps you away from the feeling of lacking and unloved and being not enough for your dreams. So, always think of why you started: your purpose and goals. At the same time, remember how you started: what you are today because of what you accomplished yesterday and the previous years in your life.

First semester done, more semesters to come. More experiences, learning, and challenges will come and test us. Better to be equipped with the learning from the past, gifts of the present, and hopes and dreams for the future.

Know more about Devcom

By: Christine Casido, Leila Mapa, Kristine Cueto, Ezy Matalog, Geraldine Brotonel

What is Devcom?
What do you do in Devcom?
What would be the possible jobs in the future of a Devcom graduate?
Why did you choose Devcom?

These are usually the questions that a Devcom student always answers.

Renew

Health is wealth. Do students still know that? I guess not.

Time flies. From August, it is now November and it means, the semester is almost over. One month to go and we can finally breathe, only if the grades are good.

But since we still have to face all the requirements to pass this sem, “magsunog ng kilay” is important. If so, is there still a chance to chill?

So here’s what I do when I’m home which expresses my thought of taking a break for some time.

#1 Watching the vlogs I have subscribed on

For a while, I could forget all my worries whenever I am watching vlogs. Currently, I am addicted to watching Gonzaga sisters’ vlogs. Catherine’s channel provides constant happiness and joy. On the other hand, Celestine’s vlog gives me the motivation to be a wiser woman in the future.

#2 Watching movies

Movies and series, missed teleseryes and all. I do telebabad every friday night.

It becomes my hobby to refresh myself from a week of school works. Watching a movie or anything that could make me cheer up, motivated or even feel sadder is the kind of refresher to me.

#3 Having longeeer sleep

Sleeping is life. Guilty enough, I could only function well if I slept for about seven hours. Below seven hours, it does not feel normal to me anymore. I tend to yawn a lot. I get tired more often. So, when I get home, I make sure that even for once, I could get a lot of sleep.

#4 Satisfy cravings

Life at home is about me, myself and I. I could eat what I like. Always, cravings satisfied.

#5 A bit socializing

Again, when I am home, this is when I contact my friends and family members. Most of the time, my auntie and her son, the cutie one is present at home. Also, I sometimes meet friends and socialize.

These are some of the things that I do to refresh myself from all the school works. It helps. But at the end of the day, we still have to get on and move forward for another challenge that life will give us.

Life never stops, so are you

Ate Keith. Keith Russel Torres is one of the intelligent and humble persons I have met. She was in the fourth year at that time when I entered high school. She was valedictorian both in elementary and high school.

She studied at the University of the Philippines- Los Baños in 2014. She took a Bachelor of Science in Forestry. Fortunately, she just graduated last year, 2018. She used to work at Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems in UPLB as Science Research Assistant. She has worked at the said institution for a couple of months right after graduation. Right now, she is working at the Philippine Statistical Research and Training Institute as a Project Development Officer in Diliman, Quezon City.

Though she’s busy with her present work, she has in mind to continue her education and take up MS Statistics in the next two years. To clarify, she would like to take up a mathematics course before. But eventually, BS Forestry was given to her.

All in all, she has loved the course she had taken. She has learned the main concepts and the foundation of education about natural resources. She has an in-depth knowledge of trees and forests. The four years of her stay in the college taught her not just about mere academics but more of socializing, getting along with people, and facing challenges and difficulties in life. She has learned how to deal with the real world outside the campus, which is the most important thing. And she has encountered and still encountering different kinds of people.

Life never stops. Continue chasing your dreams and aiming high.

Padayon!

UPCAT 2020

UPCAT is one of the highlights of the secondary education journey for most of the students. It is the way on how to enter UP. Aside from this, there are other means of admitting in the university that include transferring from the other university, reconsideration, and varsity scholarship.

Last year, there were a total of 140,593 applicants for UPCAT 2019. Out of the 101,134 eligible applicants, 90, 408 took the exams. With that number, thirteen percent were qualified for the admission, based on the statistics from UP.

This year’s UPCAT, October 5 and 6, aspiring UP scholars accompanied by their parents and guardians participated in the said exam. They were motivated and hopeful that they would pass and get into UP. The above photo shows how large the population of this year’s examinees.

Juliann Erika Paran is one of those aspirants. She came from De La Salle – Lipa Campus taking the HUMSS strand. She wanted to be part of the UP community as she believed that UP excels academically and even in different aspects. With that, she took a month of review in preparation for the exam. However, she chose to leave the week before the examination with a stress-free environment. She did not review. She relaxed her mind for a week. She was so motivated that she would make it. But in the end, she just felt drained and tired and somehow unmotivated about the exam result.

But, despite all those, she continues to believe her fate. And this is her message for the other aspiring Iskolar ng Bayan just like her.

“Never underestimate the UPCAT. Study harder. But remember that don’t be hard on yourself. If it’s your destiny to study in UP, then it is yours. If not, then something greater is reserved for you.”

Everyone has different success stories.
