TIME MACHINE

If I were to go back in time as if this sem was only a FREE TRIAL I would consider so many factors that I would love to change. I admit that I take this sem easily as if I’m just playing but it turns out it should not be treated that way. There are a lot of things I am not proud of during the first semester.

Here are my top five actions I would tell my freshie self to have a productive and meaningful semester. This is also my goals throughout my stay in UPLB excluding the first semester because it is not something to be proud of.

DO YOUR BEST, TAKE THINGS SERIOUSLY

First and foremost, you need to do your best on the first day! I should’ve said this to myself earlier so that I didn’t forget that I am studying in THE University of the Philippines. I should’ve taken into consideration that UP is not like other school that you can take easy. As the university’s saying goes: HONOR AND EXCELLENCE.

MANAGE TIME WISELY.

As a student that loves procrastinating, I should manage my time wisely so that I can use my time as effective as possible. I should set clear goals and have discipline and prioritize the things that is important and do other works ahead of time to avoid cramming also to use time effectively.

DON’T ACT LIKE A KID, BE MATURE.

Don’t take things lightly as if you’re not a college student, focus on your goals and in achieving it. Act as your age and know what to prioritize. You should always know when it’s time for jokes or if it is time to take it seriously.

FAILURE IS NORMAL.

You shouldn’t degrade yourself even if you have a failing grade, there is always a next time, a time for improvement. You did your best and that is enough, you do not need to prove yourself to others. Your goal should be to impart knowledge, not to impress people nor to brag about your achievements. People have their strengths and weaknesses, maybe what you are good at is their weakness and vice versa. Failure will teach you what you did wrong so that next time you encounter the same obstacle you know what to do.

CHILLAX KA MUNA SIS!😎

College is never easy. It will surely test our physical, emotional, and mental capability. Unlike High School, College is extra extra hard for it has so many requirements, readings, quizzes, and exams in just a single day. Being a college student thought us how to multitask in a different level knowing we’ll finish all our outputs in one night.

We all experience heavy loads, I know that some of us wants to quit already, some of us doesn’t have regular sleep, ruin body clock. I know that you are tired. I know the feeling of having sleepless nights because of finishing tons of paper works and readings just to pass the course, or some of us just want to end the semester already.

This might not be effective for all, but it is for me, once you satisfy your craving and your tummy. It feels like you are reenergized as if you now can finish tons of papers in a single seat. Comfort food will throw away all your anxiety (not all).

It is really recommended to have a support system it’s either your siblings or your friends. Let’s be all real, we don’t usually share detailed things to our parent (some do). It is great to have a friend to talk to after a long day, a long week, a long month, a long year. It is great to have someone that understands you, doesn’t judge you, will always be by your side through ups and downs.

I assure you that if you have someone to talk to about your rants, your problems, it will lessen the burden in your heart. There should be a friend that you trust with your problems.

If your world is toxic, find a place for yourself wherein you can go there anytime whenever you feel sad and lonely. It is also great to be alone, sometimes, in some cases. Being alone let’ you think and reminisce all you’ve done for the past months or years. You will have a self-meditation wherein you have to figure out what is wrong. It is sometimes okay to talk to yourself and analyze the year before you let it out to your friend.

At times you feel sad and you feel the world is against you, find your safe place and let all your burden out. Shout if you must. Cry if you want, as long as you’ll stop and continue living.

This is the number 1 thing you should do if you want to relax, talk to Him. He is your friend that will never leave you through ups and downs. He will be there for you if you need someone to talk to (not physically). He will be that friend who will love you no matter how much a failure you are. He is the friend that will guide you through your journey as a college student. NEVER LOOSE HOPE IN HIM.

✔ Coming soon…

One semester has passed, if I look back on the second weekly writes, I asses myself in terms of my qualities and skills as a media writer. Thinking about it makes me amaze on how far I’ve improved regarding my writing skills. I learned so much for the past 5 months from my DevCom courses.

I improved a lot with regards in writing. I am now confident with what I write because of the knowledge imparted to me. I would like to thank all my professors that instructed me throughout the whole semester and believing in me that I can be more of a person.

What makes a topic development-oriented?

Development-oriented topics are the most needed texts if you are a Development Communicator since you are dealing with the marginalized people’s problems that needs to be addressed. Also, a Development Communicator should be the voice of the people that is in need.

Angel Cruz, Batch 2014’s Magna Cum Laude, shared what she thinks of a development-oriented topic:

Well, for me, development-oriented ang topic if it deals with the needs of the people and improving their lives. Whether it’s addressing lack of information, lack of services, or lack of infrastructure, as long as the topic concerns people, the topic is development-oriented.

Indeed, a topic that is development-oriented should be about the people. As Nora Quebral stated:

“We need to influence their ideas and thoughts. They can, like the end users of development projects, be as resistant to change and as traditional in their ways of thinking. The DevCom practitioners must also win over this group of people.”

(Quebral, 1975)

As a DevCom student we study different aspects of a person’s life, we study their society, we study how we can help them in order to solve the problem. We also make Problematique Map for us to know the root causes of underdevelopment of a society.

She also adds information about the plan for the national sports training center.

“Nandun palang sa initial stage ng pagpupulong, kausap na po naten ang chancellor ng UPLB ano po, si Sir Sanchez, kasi finofloat naten ang idea na dito po ilagay sa UPLB ang National Sports Training Center” Congresswoman Hernandez says.

The highlight of the night is the competition where each of the 14 barangays showcase their talents and their unity. Presentations include dancing, singing and even acting. In between the dinner and program proper, there were raffle draws for the participants. Prizes are also expected by the end of the night which are to be rewarded to the winners. 10,000 for the 3rd place, 15,000 for the second place and 25,000 for the 1st place.                Undersecretatry Martin Diño was also present and gave his personal greetings and speech for the barangay. His speech included important news and announcements relevant to barangay governance.

“Inilabas na ng Senado ang kanilang desisyon sa extension ng barangay official, kaya ngayon hindi na kayo mangangampanya next year. Extended kayo hanggang 2023, yan ay ayon sa desisyon ng Senado” Diño says.

He also mentioned the proposal of salary increase and benefits for barangay level officials. “the barangay official shall consider as regular government employee with big salary, insurance, dental and medical coverage, and retirement benefits” he adds.

He ends his speech by emphasizing the importance and role of the barangay unit in helping national governance. “Tandaan niyo ang barangay ang first line of defense ng gobyerno na to. Lahat ng utos ibinababa sa barangay. Magmula sa kampanya ng illegal drugs. Ang gobyerno na to ay umaasa sa barangay, kaya napaka laki ng tulong ng ating mga barangay officials when it comes to peace and order.”
