Reassess

In our second week entry of our Weekly Writes, we had to evaluate our current skills as a media writer. This time around, we have to evaluate and see how much we have changed and, hopefully, improved!

In my second week entry, I gave myself modest scores. Because I was sure there was still room for growth, I could not give myself a reason to evaluate myself with an uno! Now around after four grueling months and a semester’s worth of work done, I evaluate myself as having the same grades—more or less. Just a single semester’s worth of subjects won’t be able to change me drastically! But, at the very least, I’m sure I improved even if just by a little.

Now, I am sure I most improved in my skills as a media writer. Though I can’t quite quantify it, I improved a bit, but stayed at around the same grade level.
I would say I improved my skills in gathering data and organizing information the most. Plenty of revisions and drafts from my exercises contributed to polishing my skills!

As for my qualities as a media writer, the same case still applies. I don’t think I improved by a drastic margin. However, I’m sure I still improved—in small or large ways. By actually being a media writer, I was able to see the importance of these qualities and work on them!

And the greatest lesson I have learned so far is: Write Clearly and Effectively! I always thought that writing in a complex way was better. That if I would add fancy sounding words from the thesaurus, I would write better. However, that is not the case! I learned to write simply, get my point across immediately, and to write clearly.
To quote Nathaniel Hawthorne, “Easy reading is damn hard writing.”

To you, a sem ago

Just one semester ago, I was dreaming of becoming a UP student. Now, here I am about to finish a semester in my dream university! Despite the pressure, time-management, and homesickness: I’m nearing the finish line. (Well, at least for this semester!) But still, I have still have a long road ahead.

I’m not the same person I was four months ago, to say the least; I’ve grown so much in the past months! And if I were to go able to advice my hopeful and eager self—giddy to get into UP, I would say:

1. Don’t be so pressured

UP is the premier university for most. Understandably, studying here carries great pressure for its students, me included. This is a lot easier said than done, but: PLEASE, DON’T WORRY TOO MUCH ABOUT THE PRESSURE. UP is still a university. It is a place to learn and grow.
Don’t worry about the failures, they are natural. Don’t worry about the pressure! Just go about things at your own pace… but please mind your time!

2. Explore the area

I used to eat only at eateries near Raymundo—I now regret that decision. To my former self, please eat around! Explore! There are a lot of things to do nearby. Please don’t limit your experiences to places near your dorm!

3. Stop procrastinating

I am what you would call a professional procrastinator. I have always carried this bad habit of mine throughout my life. Nonetheless, reminders never hurt anyone have they? So to myself one semester ago, PLEASE DO YOUR TASKS IMMEDIATELY! Your workload now is not the same as it was during high-school or senior high-school! And your tasks still won’t do themselves, unfortunately.

4. Befriend people!

People in UP come from all kinds of walks of life! They all have different stories to tell and all kinds of skills to provide! So please, befriend them! You never know what help you could get from them. And having a bigger circle could always help you!

5. Enjoy

You did it, you are in your dream university. Now please, don’t worry about the pressure, explore the place, make friends, do your tasks, and enjoy! You still have four or more years in the university! So don’t rush things and enjoy your student life!

Work and Play

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. This time old proverb still remains true today. And Devcom students are no exception; with stress and workloads piling up, taking a breather and a step back definitely helps.

Whenever I am overwhelmed with stress, I often do things that distance myself from the stressors themselves. So the things I do to unwind often involves things that zone me out and give me time to relax.

1. Naps

Naps really zone you out, in a good way. It hits two birds with one stone, for me at least, with it being a way to relax and a way to get some rest as well. Though be wary, naps can often take up a lot of your time… if you really enjoy them. (Like me!)

2. Corpsing

Well, I’m not sure if “corpsing” is a real word. Its just the term me and my tita use whenever we refer to ourselves lying down and doing absolutely nothing. It absolutely works wonders for me. I find myself relaxed whenever I do this. Just try not to fall asleep when you do this though!

3. MUSIC

Music is a surefire way to distance me from my stressors. It relaxes me and takes my mind off things for a while at least. Plus, lip singing never hurt anyone!

4. GAMES

Playing video games has been my pastime ever since I was young. I remember playing Counter Strike 1.6 when I was around 5. And ever since then, I have continuously played games as a form of entertainment and as a way to de-stress.

While being able to unwind and de-stress is crucial to productivity, make sure not to overindulge in these activities! Make sure to put everything in balance and make time for both work and play.

Impressions

An alumni of the College of Development Communication, Renz Louie Celeridad has a Bachelor’s of Science in Development Communication. Kuya Renz is from Batch 13.

And according to him, he learned five key lessons during his stay in the university.

First, he learned how to be graceful under pressure. He said, ” Pressure will always be there because you’re studying in UP. Learn to control your emotions. Don’t let your emotions control you.”

Second, what you learned is always heftier than grades. If you share your grades to others, nothing will happen. However, if you share your knowledge, you help other people learn.

Third, find groups that will help you grow holistically. Be it an org, friends, or social groups.

Fourth, there is still so much to learn. The world is bigger than Elbi, there are more opportunities to learn outside of it.

Finally, do not say “mahirap”. Instead, call it “challenging”!

College is a great place to start building your reputation.

Many thanks to Kuya Renz for providing his insights and knowledge!

Exam things for unsuspecting teens

Exams. Worse, exam weeks. Always dreaded by students– some prepared… some still preparing. Most of the time, at least for myself, the latter is who the examinee is.

Here are five tips for your dreaded devcom exams!

1. At the very least, study!

Surprisingly, this is first on the list! Who would have thought that studying is a prerequisite for exams!? Kidding aside, please do study! When exam time comes, your answers won’t come from staring at the ceiling. At least pack some knowledge in your noggin.

2. Take your mind off things

Take breaks every now and then. Your mind won’t absorb as much if its running low on charge. As a caveat, take reasonable breaks. Binging series for hours on end isn’t going to help you pass that test.

3. Study with friends

More minds are better than one. Studying alongside friends is very helpful. You can bounce ideas off each other, ask for help if you are confused, and so much more. Study buddies are always a big help before exams!

4. Music

Music is always my go to when studying. It helps me focus better. However, choose a genre that is for you. If you like death metal while studying, then go for it! But I find that studying with mellow tunes helps me absorb ideas better. Music is a big help when studying.

5. After it’s over, then it’s over

After exams, move on. Stressing yourself over your answers for question x or question y isn’t going to help. Take your mind off the exam. It is done. Maybe go out with friends, or maybe it is the right time to actually binge that show. The point is, take your mind off the exams. You can’t change your answers after you’ve passed your answer sheet.

When results come, if you passed then great! If you failed, then there is always a next time. hehe

And please don’t cram.
