Step-up

Before, I didn’t give myself a rating of 1 because of the fear of not being able to live up to that but that’s no longer the case. I’ve gotten more confident with my qualities and skills as a media writer because of a whole semester’s worth of learnings and training. Thus, most of the ratings I gave myself increased – A step-up from the earlier ratings. Although, there’s still so much room for improvement in the years to come.

Being exposed to the exercises required in the lab class of Devc 11 played a huge role in the development of such qualities. The very foundation of all the exercises, which was data gathering required perseverance, resourcefulness, and imagination to exhaust all the possible information that would make the writing process easier. The lectures and exercises in the course worked hand-in-hand to develop the qualities that gave me enough boost of confidence to rate myself an uno for almost all the qualities as shown in the photo.

After one semester of being a devcom student, it taught me the challenges of writing for the mass. There were many things that I had to unlearn to fit in in the writing style of the course.

The simpler, the better.

Know thy audience.

Establish your objectives.

Carrying the attitude, principles, and mindset I developed this semester as well as the teachings, I’m ready to face what’s to come.

Dear 18-year-old Janille,

The day you’ve been anticipating finally came. You’re now a UP student. A dream come true for someone who grew up surrounded by UP graduates you call “ate” and “kuya”. Now, I know the fear you feel within your heart can be overwhelming since you’re starting a new chapter in your life with a new environment, and a variety of new faces but know that everything will be alright as long as you keep these five pieces of advice in mind.

Enjoy your first 3 weeks at UPLB

Those three weeks are filled with freshman activities. I encourage you to attend them as much as you can because you’ll meet people who will help you during your adjustment period and even beyond that. Also, those three weeks are probably the most chill weeks in your whole first semester as a freshman at UPLB so relax and enjoy as much as you can.

Make friends

College is a lot bearable when you’re surrounded by people who will help you, who will eat with you, who will make you happy, and who will make you feel like you’re not alone and of course vice versa. Those people will add color to your college life.

Read

For the whole semester, there are several articles, essays, and the likes that you will be required to read so it’s better to be on board on the bookworm train to make your reading experience less painful. Plus, it’ll improve your writing, which you will be doing a lot in the course, so it’s a win-win.

Establish a routine

Procrastination is hard to beat so we tend to cram everything a day, a few hours or even an hour before the deadline so as early as now, form a routine in doing your papers. The moment an output is given no matter how far the deadline is, do it as early as you can. Once you’ve gotten used to doing so, it will be easier to do acads without giving it much thought.

Attend as many incentivized activities as you can

You get to expose yourself from different kinds of activities and at the same time get extra points for a certain course is a win-win so take advantage of those. Don’t let yourself be carried away by laziness because activities like such can help you in the long run.

Sincerely yours,

19-year-old Janille whose almost done with the semester

Unwind

A workload of a college student is no joke. There are weeks wherein you have a bunch of things to accomplish and weeks wherein you will question why you have so much time on your hands. For the former, there is a need to rest, chill, and de-stress to stay healthy- mentally, physically, and even psychologically.

How to unwind:

Treat yourself

Treating oneself can come in many forms. May it be finally buying the food you’ve been eye-balling all week but your budget said no, getting that 6 hours or more of sleep, watching that K drama/TV Show/Anime/Movie you’ve been putting off, or hanging out with your friends. It’s the reward you deserve after working so hard.

Exercise

Exercise is proven to improve one’s well-being and reduce stress. Going to the gym is not essential. You can jog or brisk walk around the campus, and you can even attend Zumba sessions.

Go outside

Staying within the four corners of a room can be suffocating. Go outside, sit down on a field, and relax. Seeing a new environment free from any thoughts of academic-related things is relaxing. It’s one way to chill and de-stress.

Alumna’s lessons

Dr. Mia Liza Lustria, a BS Development Communication graduate, Class 1990 alumna was invited in the event “Speaking of Devcom”, conversations with Devcom’s Finest last October 10, 2019. She shared the lessons she acquired during her four-year stay in UPLB in her speech.

“I want to make a difference with the research that I do. I don’t publish just to get published. I do research because I want to make a difference.”

Dr. Mia Lustria

The University instilled within her the desire to help. Now, she’s an internationally recognized expert in health communication and in health informatics who conducts interdisciplinary collaborative research aimed at promoting health and supporting patient self-management through the use of persuasive technologies and interactive media. Those are only some of the many jobs and research Dr. Mia has and does. Some, in which, are centered to improve the populations with high incidences of disease burden including those from ethnic or racial, rural, socio-economically disadvantaged, and other medically under served backgrounds.

“Believe that what you have to make a difference globally or even nationally, you have developed here at UP Los Baños, specifically at the College of Development Communication. You have the best education ever and I can say that for sure ’cause I’ve taught at a University in the United States and you can compete very well. “

Dr. Mia Lustria

Training with one of the best Universities in the Philippines, she learned the importance of work ethics, networking skills, and soft skills that prepared her for the world outside the university. Work ethics-wise, which is considered her greatest strength as people have told her, her attention to detail, and her pagkamaparaan was developed. When faced with a problem she had a hard time solving, her professor would always say “hanapan mo ng solusyon yan.” Excuses weren’t allowed. In terms of networking skills and soft skills that she got from her professors, she now applies them through her research projects that bring people together.

A tip from Dr. Mia Lustria:

Be (a) hard worker, believe in yourself, visualize your goals, and make that plan because for sure I can tell you I’ve seen it over and over in my life that when you do that, you got this.”
