Continual improvement is unending journey.

Lloyd Dobens

Looking back from where it started…

On the beginning of the semester, we were asked to rate our qualities and skills as a media writer. Throughout the semester, we learned how to hone and use these qualities and skills during class discussions and exercises. Every week we got exposed to different mediums and how to write for these mediums and their audiences. Now that the semester has come to an end, I can say that I was able to apply all the lessons I’ve learned in this class.

The qualities that I have improved is was persevering because I didn’t give up easily, I just kept going to achieve the success I was aiming for. It also improves my resourcefulness because if I lack the equipment I make way to deliver my output. Puts premium on accuracy and truth because it builds my output better and credible.

The skills that I have developed is validating and clarifying the information because before I trust it and put it in my output I fact-check it first and check if it is real and it happened.

In general, I can say that my qualities and skills as a media writer have improved during the past weeks. With these Weekly Writes, I got to practice how to properly write, express, and communicate. Before I am so trying hard in writing. Now, I wanted to share that this activity really helped me to improve my skill and I am grateful for it. Last and final weekly write for the semester, but this is just the beginning of writing output for the college and the community.

A Message from your Past Self

Your FUTURE is CREATED by what you do TODAY, not tomorrow.

Anonymous

The first semester has been a roller-coaster ride. It has given me a lot of realizations in life. Where I met different kinds of people and make them as my friends. It was full of adjustments, not just the environment but even the workload that I’ve got before. It was a semester full of opportunities and learning. Where it helps me be a better person. With that, here are some reminders and advice I wish I could tell my old self;

Set your priorities.

Think of the things that are needed. As you plan to make something about it, finishing your requirements ahead of time, read your supplements, prepare for your next classes. If you need to do it make a sacrifice because every sacrifice has a worth. Have a balance in your extracurricular and academics.

Have time for everything.

Do not procrastinate. Use your time wisely. It is better that you finished your requirements ahead of time rather than cram it because there is a big-time that is wasted and it is not productive.

Don’t be afraid of failures.

There will come a time that you have failed your quizzes or exams, accept it and move on. Do better and prepare ahead for it. Try to do an advance reading or rereading your notes. Do not be discouraged. Take your failure as learning, because it makes you a better person, but try to commit fewer mistakes.

Be industrious.

Strive to be your best every day. Think that you can. Do everything that can make your output, worth their time. Again, do not cram your outputs because some of them have the potential to be the best. Use your time for productivity not only for fun.

Enjoy the process.

As they say: “Mahaba haba pa lalakbayin mo.” As you go to different places, meet new people, the opening of new opportunities, go and take it. Because some of them will not be available or seen in the near future. Treasure every moment, may it be fun or sad because at the end of the day there is a learning in every moment.

Hi Gherald! Please take this note in your heart and mind. Strive to be a better person everyday. Keep on striving until you reach your goals and dreams. Keep going! Continue to be Courageous and Daring! Enjoy your stay in the university. I’m so proud of you. One semester down, more semesters to go. Laban lang! Remember that God is with you too. *HUG*

Love,

Gherald

Paskuhan sa UP eLBi

Last November 19, 2019, various people visited UPLB’s Annual Christmas Lightning Ceremony with a title, Pasko Sa Elbi: Isang Pasasalamat.

The Campus’ entrance way features radiant and warm decorations such as the gigantic tree embedded with various christmas balls and ornaments, a lifesize Belen, and the bright and colorful pathway that highlights this year’s theme, Paskuhan sa Barrio.

Chill like Gherald’s Way

‘Tis the season to be jolly

Deck the Halls (Thomas Oliphant, 1862)

This is the most wonderful time of the year and ’tis the season to be jolly because a few weeks from now our first semester is about to end. But is it the season to be jolly? Looking at the calendar, there are many requirements to submit, exams to take, and do other academic-related stuff to pass our subjects.

They said that “hell week” is approaching. But for me it’s Faith Week. So, now how do we chill after accomplishing all the tasks? Here are just some of the matters that I do after a long week:

  1. Getting an adequate amount of sleep.
It is needed to have sufficient rest after several sleepless nights due to cramming and finishing requirements. This allows my body to regain the strength that I have lost.

  2. Listen to your favorite artist.
It’s your time to sing your heart out to release all the stress that you had. And it helps you improve your hearing skills as well as your talent.

  3. Try to join a Community Zumba or exercise.
Every time you exercise, you secrete endorphins that help you feel better and positive. This also helps you to be fit.

  4. Reflect, meditate, and pray.
I can do all things through Christ, who gives me strength. Assess your faith and thank God for all the good things you have enjoyed. It’s good to feed your soul again because it is one of the things you can gain your strength.

  5. Reconnect with friends and family.
After a long time of academic work, go with your friends and have a catch-up session, sharing of thoughts and laughter together. Bond with the people that believes in you, they give the energy that will make you go through and pursue your goals. The love and appreciation that they give, give me the strength to do things beyond my limitations.

These activities I do may seem to be so “Tito” but it’s my way of coping up with stress. I believe that rest is important for the body and mind to function well. Likewise establishing a strong relationship with your family and friends this will give you energy because these people fuel your passion and aspiration. I hope that I have inspired you to find out the activities that suit your being. Have a great week ahead at the university!

Learning from UP Naming Mahal

https://drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folders/14wEsFjVxvz812cBi8PkIoPOUiyfOlQx8

Last 10th of October we walked around the event’s place, where we saw different people from different offices, colleges, places, and alumni that went back home to celebrate their anniversary. As we passed by the Milka Krem, the popular dairy store in the university, a group of women in red were there, seating together and reminiscing the memories that they had during their stay in the university.

She is Anna Maria Velous a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture major in Horticulture graduate from the class of 1979. She now works in the Philippine Nuclear Institute as a Science Research Specialist in Diliman, Quezon City.

Here are the key lessons that UP have taught her; is how to get along with people and on how to survive in life. In UP, you will be on your own as she said “kung ano ang gagawin mo to the best of your ability and sa buhay it prepares you after school. Mag aral whatever na mangyari na sa buhay mo you have to stand on your own and do what you have to do.”

The challenge that UP has brought her, as she describe “Ang UP ang training nila ay itatapon ka sa ocean and bahala kang mabuhay sa sarili mo, and how to survive. Survival of the fittest.. ang UP kasi ay matira matibay, so sa life mo mai-aapply.” She was able to overcome the challenge that UP has given her, aside from the fact that you need to study hard for you to graduate, the main point is your future depends on you and not on others, whatever you like it or not. You must stand on your own. You don’t have anyone to depend on always.

It developed her character more, helped her how to deal with different kinds of people because UP has different walks of life, some people belong in the marginalized poor, those who belong in the middle class and upper class. There are studious, you must know how to get along with them. She said “ang training ng UP is different from other university, na sa (ibang) university they’ll spoon-feed you pero sa UP kung gusto mong mag graduate mag-aral ka mabuti, kung ayaw mong grumaduate edi bahala ka.”

As you work on to thrive on the challenge that you face the mind tends to be critical to solve the problem and how you handle things. It helps you to be more independent. To sum up, here are the things that I have learned from Ms. Velous, you must be critical in every choice that you will make, be strong enough to stand up and face the challenges that life may bring, be resilient and be industrious to achieve your goals in life.

The UPCAT Experiences and of all the universities why UP?

Looking back years ago, I was also one of the aspirants who wanted to enter the premier state university of the country. But before entering the university you must pass its first examination, the University of the Philippines College Admission Test or simply UPCAT. There are thousands of aspirants who dare to take the challenge every year, but only a small percentage qualified. It was a battle for dreams, brains, and pressures of young students who wanted to pursue college in a university offering a proven globally competitive education, practice of self-expression and have working facilities.

Last weekend (October 5 & 6) was the day that UP aspirants have waited to dare to take the test. This year the third batch of the K-12 curriculum tried their luck to take the exam. With them are their dream careers and guided motivations in life with one goal, the faith that UP is the best instrument that can help them achieve their ambition. UPLB is one of the testing centers that accommodated thousands of takers, parents, and guardians from Laguna and nearby provinces.

Then as I walk around the campus I saw in the faces of the takers a mix of anxiousness that they won’t pass the exam and courageousness to reach their ambition. I met and had interviews with some students, parents and/or guardians and asked them what does the UP have and many students are trying their luck to enter and study here in the university. They shared their reasons why they wanted to be part of the university while parents have expressed her thoughts about supporting her child’s dream to enter the academe.

“Bakit UP?”
