After a whole semester of gathering data, writing for different platforms and producing media contents, I am glad that I was able to work on the qualities and skills that I need to acquire as a media writer.
Through the different exercises and activities, I have learned to be more curious and inquisitive. Asking questions is important especially if you do not have enough knowledge about a topic or an event. Your curiosity will lead you to the information that you will need in doing your job right. Being intelligent does not mean that you just know a lot of things. This course has taught that this quality also involves sharing your knowledge to people and do not keep it to yourself. I also learned to be more imaginative. There were activities where we need to use our imagination to visualize the output. Although I still have to work on this quality to make my outputs more creative in the future. This can be achieved through improving my love for reading. From the beginning, we were always told to read a lot. I think this is still the quality that I need to work on the most.
During the semester, I further developed my skills in gathering data as well as validating, clarifying and organizing information. This was because of the laboratory exercises and Weekly Writes activities assigned to us. I still have to work on writing clearly and effectively through writing for different media. I am also hoping that I will be acquiring more knowledge and proficiency in the operation of communication tools and devices in higher devcom courses.
My first semester in the university was indeed one hell of a roller coaster ride. There were times when I just want to scream as loud as I can to release all the negative energy. I admit that all these that just happened was not what I expected it to be. I know for a fact that UP life is hard, but I didn’t know that it would be THIS hard. However, I still have no regrets, and for surviving, I congratulate myself.
To you Thresha at the beginning of first semester,
Do what you can do today.
I’m not saying that you should finish all your assignments already. What’s important is that you were able to at least start doing them so that when the deadline comes, you will not be pressuring yourself because of cramming and multitasking. If you feel tired to start anything, rest for a while and after that, go on with what you need to do.
Take care of your health.
Do not be hard-headed. Take the advice from your family and friends. Reduce your intake of softdrinks and junk foods for they are not good for your kidneys. Make sure to drink lots of water and get enough sleep.
Do not just keep everything to yourself.
You have a lot of people around you who cares about you. If you are feeling something heavy inside, go and tell them. Sharing your problems to someone may not solve everything but at least it will lessen the heaviness that you feel. Do not suffer alone.
Continue doing what makes you happy.
No matter what other people will say, if it makes you happy, there’s no turning back. Do not doubt yourself whether you are good enough or not. It’s your passion and no one should stop you from doing it. If it makes you happy, and as long as it does not affect your studies, trust me, you are doing the right thing.
Just be yourself.
You do not have to prove anything to anyone. I am already proud of you for being where you are now. Keep on fighting, Iska! You still have a long way to go.
The lighting of the university’s giant Christmas tree and other Christmas decorations tells us that it’s already Christmas in UPLB!
The theme of this year’s installation is Paskuhan sa Barrio, featuring a life-sized Belen and a mini park with fountain. The lighting ceremony was held on the evening of November 19 with a program entitled Pasko sa Elbi: Isang Pasasalamat. It was attended by Chancellor Sanchez, university vice chancellors, faculty members, staffs, students and Los Baños residents. Part of the event were performances from UPLB Choral Ensemble, Dr. Antonio Jesus Quilloy, UPLB Street Jazz Dance Company, and the UPLB Filipiniana Dance Troupe. Also, a mini bazaar was opened at the parking lot of the University Housing Office.
Setting up these ornaments at the UPLB main gate started thirteen years ago in 2006. This marks the beginning of holiday season and the coming end of the First Semester.
Here is a video prepared by Group Binhi showcasing the highlights of UPLB’s annual treat for the community.

It was that time of the year again when students must deal with a bunch of reflection papers, group reporting, quizzes and long examinations. Taking a break is okay, especially if everything already feels heavy. Here are five things that I do to de-stress and unwind:
Eat your comfort food.
Having a full stomach will surely give you energy to finish everything in your to-do list. Satisfy your cravings with food that you are thinking about for the past days. You may also eat out with your friends at your favorite food places.
Watch television series.
Cross out one of the series in your must-watch list. It is good to laugh and feel that ‘kilig’ while watching. However, do not stay up too late to finish the episodes.
Talk to your loved ones.
Sharing your thoughts and feelings to someone is effective to at least lessen the stress that you are feeling. It also feels good to talk with your mom even just on the phone for a minute or two. Also remember that your friends are there to cheer you up.
Sweat off.
Dancing is my favorite hobby, and every time I feel that my day is off, I dance. I just stand in front of the mirror, listen to upbeat music, and feel the vibe. You may also sweat off through walking or running around the park.
SLEEP IS ALL YOU NEED.
Well, for me, sleep is not for the weak. If I feel that everything is not falling into place, I sleep to recharge and forget the feeling of uneasiness at least even for a while. When you wake, just pat yourself on the back and say “Let’s get back to work!”
Minsan kailangan mo talagang gawing araw ang gabi.
Sir Leo
Loyalty Day 2019 gathered the alumni of University of the Philippines Los Baños in a day full of throwback stories, reminiscing all the memories of their college life. You can see smiling faces everywhere, as well as people waving at each other. As I was walking around the booths, a group of alumni caught my attention. They were happily laughing despite the hotness of that afternoon. Former UPLB students, all of them are now employees at College of Agriculture and Food Science. One of them is Sir Leonardo Tamisin Jr., or more commonly known as Sir Leo, from Agrisystems Institute. He was from Class 1987 of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Major in Agronomics, Production and Management.
When asked about the key lessons that he have learned during his stay in the university for college, he emphasized that being industrious is a must. If you need to double your effort, then do so. He mentioned that there are two types of people in UP: “isang may biyaya, at isang may tiyaga”. With this, he meant that there are students who are already gifted with knowledge and skills, and students who are persevering to acquire knowledge and skills. He shared that he was one of those students who are called ‘may tiyaga’. From his experiences, he said that having sleepless nights are already normal for UP students. You should not be complaining about having lack of sleep. All you have to do is to manage your time properly so that you will finish your tasks on time, or even ahead of time. However, he also emphasized that whichever you are from these types of people in UP, it is and will always be important to give your all in everything you do. Until now, these lessons were still being applied in his job here at UPLB-CAFS. He said that being industrious and persevering do not just end after you graduate. This should be lifetime values that will drive us to success.
This interview with Sir Leo inspired me to push harder and to not think about giving up. I was enlightened that all of these that I was experiencing right now are just the beginning of a long journey ahead of me. Just like what he said, it is about time management and doubling my efforts in everything that I do.
Admission in the University of the Philippines requires one to pass the UP College Admission Test, or more commonly known as UPCAT. Months before the scheduled dates of examination, students from all over the country were already busy preparing themselves for the test. It was indeed an awaited moment for incoming college students.
UPCAT 2020 was held last October 5-6, 2019. There were different testing centers located in the different parts of the Philippines, including here at University of the Philippines Los Baños. We interviewed two groups of examinees, asking them questions about their UPCAT stories and experiences. We asked them to rate from 1 to 10 how much do they want to be a UP student, and how confident are they that they will ace the exam. We also asked them about their preparations for the examination.
Christian, Ayessa, Krizza and Niña from Calamba Institute.
Asked about how much do they want to get into the university, they answered 9, 7, 8 and 10, respectively. They said that the quality of education in UP made them want to be students here. The facilities and way of teaching were also mentioned as reasons. They gave themselves a rating of 7 when asked about how confident are they that they will pass the exams. This is because they had a difficult time in answering the reading comprehension test part, as well as for the language proficiency. They said that they didn’t really prepared that hard for the exam. They only review their lessons if they have extra time.
Shek, Ceska, and Toni from Labas Senior High School, Sta. Rosa
These three gave themselves a rating of 8 when asked about how much do they want to get into the university. Toni explained that they didn’t gave a rating of 10 because of the fact that there are a lot of students like them who want to get into the university. However, they still recognized the high quality education offered by UP. Asked about how confident are they that they will pass the exam, they answered 4, 5, and 6, respectively. They admit that the exam was not that difficult if only you will review and recall the topics discussed in the past. The topics included in the exam were familiar to them, but they do not know how to come up to the answer. They also didn’t prepare so much for the exam. They just review on their free time using downloaded reviewers from twitter and facebook. They also shared that their most unforgettable part is during the application process for the exam. The bond that they have made during this time became one of those enjoyable moments in their lives.
