DevCom is the NEW THING!

As students taking BS Development Communication in University of the Philippines Los Baños, many will approach and ask, “What is DevCom?,” “Is it like MassCom, but with a heart?,” or “What jobs/opportunities will you get from taking DevCom course?” At first, we have no idea what to say. After weeks studying, we now have answers to those questions. Here is a video introducing Development Communication and the top three questions answered by BS DevCom freshmen students.

The New Version

As the semester ends, looking back at all the activities, events, quizzes, and exams, I have not realized that my first semester at the college of development communication is nearing its completion. Remembering the first month of the semester, when I can still say that I am a freshman in every aspect, I, or rather we, assessed ourselves on what are our gradings on ourselves in terms of the qualities and skills as a media writer. In the assessment, I have given myself low/average in most of the parts, except for one in the skills, and that is where I was confident. Currently, with the semester ending and all of the activities that Devcom has given to us freshman, I can say that I have improved in some parts of the skills and qualities of being a media writer.

In the assessment, I gave myself a three (3) in the qualities which are; Curious, Intelligent, Industrious, Resourceful, and Loves to read. While two (2) on; Persevering, Imaginative, Interested in and loves people, Self-oriented, and Puts a premium on accuracy and truth. I cannot say that I am fully imaginative and persevering that I could have given it a one (1), but I do know at that time that I am what I say I am in the assessment.

Currently, I can say that I have improved, even though the improvement is rather small or insignificant, improvement is still an improvement and that what really matters. Although I still cannot say that I can give myself a one (1) rating on my two (2) ratings, My three (3) ratings have improved, especially in the industrious and resourceful qualities. Even though it is not a one (1) in the ratings, an improvement of two (2) is enough for me to know that I have gained something.

In being resourceful, you would have to be able to gather data or information at unexpected times, and think of another way to gather the data, if not, more effectively and precisely. And I have become more industrious in a way that I have finished more output at the same time that I would have before with lesser outputs.

In the assessment on the skills of being a media writer, I have given myself an overall rating of a three (3) with; Data Gathering, Validating and Clarifying information, Organizing Information, and Writing Clearly and Effectively, with the exemption of Proficiency in the operation of tools and devices having a rating of one (1), the only skill that I can say that I am confident about.

Today, I can say that I have improved on all of the skills, not a perfect rating, but improved in the way that I am confident about my skills possibility and future. An example of my improvement would be on my data gathering and validating and gathering information, where I know what data or information is valid and reliable in the age of fake information. As well as organizing the information well, with clear and effective writing, removing some unused and redundant words.

Travel Back

The first semester is nearing its end, and I have a ton of memories that the semester gives that I will cherish forever until the very end of my university life. There are instances that I would want to travel back and tell to my self what I need to do in order for me to further enhance my life here in the university, and at the college of development communication.

  1. Take a rest! One of the most important thing to do ad remember while we are now in college is that everyone needs to rest, either it is short or long, resting will help us relax our minds and ready ourselves for the upcoming events/activities.
  2. It is okay to cry. I know that you are trying your best to survive the semester, but sometimes, when it is just really too much for you to handle, cry, so that you can have a time for your mind to acknowledge the reality of college.
  3. Try to make everything fun. We know in college that there are numerous workload that would deter the meaning of the word fun. However, incorporating on what you think can make the task fun, means less of a hassle to you.
  4. Try to eat until you are full. Sometimes, we cannot have a full meal, especially in the mornings, since the daily routines are mostly waking up, take a bath, dress, and go to the first class, missing breakfast entirely. So make sure to eat something before going to class.
  5. Always smile! even when times go by against you, even when you think the world and odds are against you, always smile to have the positivity around you more profound and life-changing to other people.d

D-STRESS

Besides the fact that every week is a stressful week, the midterms are somewhat the semesters start of the renowned hell week of UP. The midterms are mainly compose of numerous quizzes, exams, and activities or group works, this is where the ‘rising action’ of the stress of the semester starts before going to the climax of the hell week.

Of course, us students, cannot handle multiple load of activities, quizzes, and exams, since we need to have balance between our self, and the environment around us. So naturally, we look for a way to have all the negativity of the stress that surrounds us and how to cope and adapt to the stressful times of the midterms.

EAT!

Of course we eat three time a day, at the very least, and it is needed for our body to be readily able to handle the day without any sort of blemishes of sickness and hunger. What I mean by eat, is that, fill to your hearts desire to any of the craving you have. This is one of the proven ways of destressing in times of heavy task and workloads. In eating, there is right or wrong in what you consider as delicious, as long as you treat yourself till you have the contented to your hearst desire.

Have a walk with fresh air

We have been graciously gifted with a wonderful atmosphere and location here in UPLB. Sitting at the foot of the beautiful Mt. Makiling, the fresh air of the mountain brings calmness to everyone who sits and relax at the parks of UPLB. And when stress takes its toll, take a scenic walk around the campus and enjoy the fresh air that the university gives off, and appreciate the view of the campus itself, and have a quiet time with yourself while taking in the winds of Mt. makiling.

Watch

Enjoy yourself with a series of anime and/or dramas that makes you intrigue, laugh, cry, and smile. Watching some series makes you relieve of the stress of the realities at the university. Of course there should be some consideration on how much time should everyone spend on watching their beloved anime and/or dramas. However, we still can enjoy ourselves in watching and have the stress from our minds be replace by satisfaction and pleasure.

SLEEP!

Every day from Monday to Sunday, we experience sleep on a daily basis, ranging from eight to ten hours. However, UP students, normally get six to eight hours of sleep, sometimes even lower,  according to my own experience. So when stressful times come, and that is inevitable in our current state and in the university itself, sleep is the natural and BEST way of relieving anything related to or in accordance to stress.

UPCAT, again.

I remembered from two years ago, our class started to review for our UPCAT, even though the seniors at the time were nearing theirs. Started when I was still a grade eleven student, I purposely and eagerly learn all of the necessary topics on what I think the exam will give. I am blessed that I am now studying at the premier university of the Philippines, and am very excited to see aspiring students who want to study at the University of the Philippines.

The UPCAT season is back, and with it, brings hundreds to thousands of student applicants who wish to enter the University of the Philippines. It is the season of every senior high school student who would have dreamed and/or dreaded, and it is the season where every parent’s dream and hopes for their children start as they are nearing the life of a college student.

At present, the students are now on the schedule of morning examination, with their parents anxiously waiting for their sons and daughters, even though the results of the exams are due in March next year.

“The exam was fun”, what was Hans Sison said during the examination. Hans Sison is currently studying at the Darwin International School, where its UPCAT examinees now have more than thirty-five students. “Even though it was hot, cramped, it was fun, because, at the ACET, we were time-constrained.”

“I’m not underestimating it, but I expected it to be more difficult” Hans Continued explaining his ‘Jaw-dropping experience of UPCAT.

Ericka Biglangawa, also a student from Darwin international School, said that the exam was hard and that “would want to hug my mother” after the exam, saying that she prefers the ACET over the UPCAT.

Michaello Hermogenes, also from Darwin International School said that he was ‘relieve’ that the exam was over, and that there were some questions that he left blank due to the time constraint and pressure.

Alas, after their exam, they all went to their parents for their comfort after the tiring exam. The parents, during the exam, were anxious about their beloved children taking the exam, praying that they would have answered most of the question and to ‘finally finish the exam, as the mother of Michaello Hermogenes said.

“One of my hopes and prayers is that she would pass her UPCAT examination, because for me, UP, is the best place for her.” Ericka’s mother (would like to be disclosed about her name), said as she waits for her daughter to finish her examination.

Lastly, Robynn de Jesus greatly define what UP means for him, why would he rather chose UP other than top universities. “UP because it is a home for people who are looking for a space to express themselves and to be listened to.”

I do remember why I have chosen UP as my path with him continuing “it is the university that brings out the best of you, where you will meet people who would help you voice-out your own self and will make you the better version of yourself.” And that was what makes UP for me, and they make the worthwhile decision of taking the UPCAT.

Surviving

  1. Study smart

Of course, there will always be a recalling of the previous lesson and/or notes before the exams. however, since the notes are more than what you can possibly acquire or remember, my advice is to study everything, BUT, remember only the key words and/or phrase, use photographic memory if it helps you, or if you have it.

We all know that not all students are the same, that is why it is advisable to find the comfort level of the students, experiment with things, listen to music or not, go to a crowded place or not, etc., just find the comfort of studying smartly and effectively.

2. Time wisely

Use the time wisely. Being a university student is on another level of those in high school, wherein the exams are in a week with no other projects or quizzes form different subjects, in universities, no specific time or date is needed for the professors to announce an exam. So plan ahead and see which of the possibilities that you have chosen be beneficial to you with your exams.

3. Do not force yourself

Forcing yourself will result to a less productive learning. Do not force your mind to acquire or learn something immediate. Learning should, supposedly, take a prolonged period of time. Immediate learning, for most people, is clearly ineffective. Take your time in learning, try to understand the lessons properly so that

4. Take a break

Continuous studying can be good, but, taking a break, either long or short, can be a great benefit for you in the long run. Having to rest for five minutes to half an hour, can reduce the stress that you put on the mind, thus can result to have a healthy mind to continue learning.

5. Just let yourself be happy.

Try to have a smiling face after or before the exam, showing that you have a smile in your face means that you have endured all of the stress from the countless and nightly study for the exam. Give yourself a reward, do anything that can make you feel happy, a great way to destress once in a while.

It is okay to fail, no one is ever perfect.
