The semester is almost done. A few more finishing touches and ta- da! One semester down, (n) semesters to go!

Looking back, I never really imagined myself surviving these Development Communication courses. Just like what I’ve said on my previous entries, I am new in this field. I am totally clueless, a beginner, indeed. But, fortunately, with the help of my professors and also my classmates especially my blocmates, I am able to cope up with this new environment with a lot of knowledge and information that I’ve acquired from them.

Now, as I reassess my skills and capabilities as a media writer, I can proudly say that I have improved all throughout my five months stay in the college. Those skills that I am lacking a few months back are now one of my strengths when I’m crafting a news or a paper. Truly, my five months worth of training in the corners of CDC had helped me enough. However, there are still a lot of rooms which needs improvement. And this fact encourages me to do better and give my hundred percent best all the time in order to craft a quality work.

My journey towards being an effective and efficient media writer is a long, long way to go. Am I scared? Am I nervous? Definitely not. Because I know that I have my CD2 family who’ll help me to cope up to higher devcom courses along with the professors in the college. Laban, Pam! Lagi’t lagi, para sa bayan!

Five Things Pamela Should’ve Done

https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/mobile/folders/13CqZwZPhIq0ZjV3q_pSgZ0HrNI6-HoDl?tab=wo&sort=13&direction=a

The semester is almost done. Finally, a few more days from now and we’ll be able to go on our respective homes and spend time with our family and friends. Indeed, time flies so fast here in the university.

Looking back, I didn’t expect that I will be able to finish my first semester here in UPLB with fulfillment and contentment in my heart. However, I also realized that there are a lot of things that I should’ve done from the very beginning. Things that may help me to have a more meaningful semester. In this regard, let me share you these five little things that I regret not doing from the very first start.

1. Spend my money wisely.

Reflecting on my expenses here for the last five months, I came to a realization that I really am an impulsive buyer sometimes. I realized that at some point I waste my allowance for buying these things which are not really necessary.

2. Use my time wisely rather than procrastinating.

Procrastination, that’s really my biggest enemy. I tend to ignore all my workloads and whatnots most of the time. And when the deadline is fast approaching, that’s only the time that I’m going to do it. As a result, a cram quality output.

3. Attend different events in the university.

Numerous events were held in the university during the first semester, almost all of it were really a big addition to everyone’s knowledge and awareness. However, I had no chance to attend it all. A big part of me is regretting up until now because I wasted a lot of chances to improve my understanding on different societal issues and concerns.

4. Speak up especially in lecture classes.

I want to speak, I really am. I want to share my insights, I want to participate in class discussions however I always have this thought that what if my answer is wrong, what if my understanding is completely the opposite.

5. Go out and make more friends.

Friends are really essential, that’s what I realized during my first months here. As much as possible, I really want to have a lot of friends because I know they are the ones who’ll help me all throughout my college life. However, I am this awkward person who find it hard to start a simple conversation. Hopefully, next semester, I can overcome it all.

And that’s it. Those are the things that I, Pamela, should have done before. Although I did not do those things right away, I will do my best to do it on the next semester. Laban, Pam! Laban, mga kapwa ko iskolar! One semester down, more semesters to go!

Throwback Thursday

Struggle is real, that’s how Engr.Romnick Pelagio de los Reyes describes his five years worth of college education here in University of the Philippines Los Baños. It was June 2012 when Engr. de los Reyes first set his feet in the university with the hope of becoming a civil engineer in the future. Five years later, finally, his dream became a reality.

During my talk with him, he shared me these three life lessons he acquired from UPLB. First is to build a support system. According to him, it is really important to have a set of genuine friends during your college life. They are the one’s who’ll help you along the way especially when the road goes bumpy. Second is to always remember your reason why you’re here in the university. In times of difficulties and hardships, these reasons encouraged and helped him to do better and keep on going. In these reasons, he found the strength and the hope to go on and continue what he had started. And lastly is to enjoy the college life amidst the pressure and demands of it. He told me that it is a once in a lifetime experience so might as well enjoy every bit of it.

Two years after his graduation, he is now rendering his service in an engineering firm somewhere in Manila. Truly, his struggles and hardships had paid off. Padayon, Engr. de los Reyes!

Breathe

On today’s time when there is too much emphasis on productivity, hyper-efficiency and multi-tasking as coping mechanism, people have forgotten how to take a break, relax and stay away from stress. But, worry no more ’cause I’m here to help you out!

Here are my recommended steps on how you can chill out from a stressful and hectic schedule!

1. Don’t procrastinate.

Every week here in the university can be considered as hell week. There are always pile of workloads, papers, deadlines and other academic- related stuff. In order for you to not be that stressed, give yourself more time to do such things. Having more time means less rush and high quality of output created.

2. Work with someone who’s exciting.

No man is an island. Keeping a work buddy is always better. Having someone in your side who can help you in doing your work is really beneficial. Aside from it can help you lessen your workload, it can also help you in functioning better. In that way, you’re hitting two birds with one stone: finishing your work on time plus not stressing yourself too much.

3. Walk with nature.

Whenever you feel exhausted, our nature can be your go-to-friend. Based on studies, green surrounding can help you boost your mood. It can make you calm and feel at peace. It can also help you in focusing and functioning better.

4. Take evenings off, have a decent sleep.

In the middle of everything, health is one of those things that one should prioritize. As much as possible, get a complete sleep even though you’re bombarded with school works. Reserve your night and seriously, no works at all. Your health is more important.

5. Give yourself a day- off.

In those seven days in a week, have at least a day or two for yourself. Do what you want. Binge watching, food trip, sleep, or any activity that you enjoy doing. Having a day- off can help you feel recharge and motivated.

Step by step, little by little, learn to relax and enjoy your college life. Bear in mind that productivity doesn’t mean you should  always exhaust yourself. Have time to take a breathe, take a step away from stress and chill out. Tandaan mo na tao ka, ‘di ka robot.

UP, according to him, will give him not just free and quality education but also broad set of opportunities in the future. This is the very reason why he took the risk and accepted the UPCAT challenge.

Old notebooks and papers, past lectures, and simulation tests, these are the things that helped him in preparing for the said examination. According to him, the examination is both easy and hard. Easy because the questions are all in the high school lessons and lectures, and hard for the time is limited. Nevertheless, he still manage to answer the questions and finish the test.
