Armed with his athletic skills, the College of Development Communication (CDC) College Secretary Edmund Centeno dominated the finals match of badminton singles, 2-0, against Reinier Gaspar in the 2019 CDCiklaban Sportsfest held at Baker Hall, University of the Philippines Los Baños on November 9 and 16.

Centeno beat Gaspar through a statement win of 21-7, 21-11 to finish the tournament with an unbeaten record.

Before going to the finals, both players need to sweep their opponents through a stepladder format, defeating three players each before qualifying in the battle for the gold.

Aside from this, Centeno also paired up with Mark Angelo Baccay as they also dominated rounds in the badminton doubles category.

CDCiklaban is a sports festival organized by the CDC Student Council that aims to provide opportunities for individual development through various activities, increase social contacts, growth of lasting friendships and recreation for individuals, regardless of their skill ability.

An Improved Version

Looking back, I have never thought that I have given myself the following rates. Maybe I have changed a lot since then and this is because of what I have experienced in our first semester. It was quite challenging, but knowing the fact that there is an improvement in my personality speaks a lot about what knowledge and understanding I have gained in this course.

Rating of My Qualities as a Media Writer before (right) and after (left) the semester.

Answering the question before, I told in this blog that I should work more on being service-oriented and being interested in the people the most. Here, I graded myself a score of 3 with an explanation that sometimes I am lacking the will to perform actions to do something about the situation of the society. Now, reflecting every time an exercise was given to us, I realized how important it is to be service-oriented and how you need to produce something aimed towards catering the masses. It is providing information for them, and in order to do that you need to pour out every effort you can give to gather details that are critical or that will affect the lives of the people. Also, I learned that it is important to communicate with them, and know how important to is to be in their situation. Being interested in the people means that you are there to empower lives and to speak for them. You have to know their opinions and their suggestions because at the end of the day, they are the ones who will be affected the most by every activity or situation conducted or faced by the community. Overall, my grade for myself in my qualities as a media writer vastly improve from when I started being a DevCom student.

Rating of My Skills as a Media Writer before (right) and after (left) the semester.

No doubt, my skills as a media writer should get an average of 1.

Honestly, I have improved a lot in terms of being a media writer as I did the exercises of this course. I have been trained to gather, organize, clarify and validate information through coordinating with project heads and officials that implemented different activities. Knowing the purpose and objectives of an article will help a media writer to determine how he/she will be able to arrange information using the tips in writing clearly and effectively. I learned that if you really allow yourself to go out of the box or out of the boundaries of the skills you have before, you will discover that there’s much room to improve on. Now, I continue to seek improvements of this skills as I take on the next DevCom courses.

This entry might mark as the end of me being a student of DEVC 11 but I am so glad and honored to share this experience with you. This has been my journey, and I hope everyone can also learn from this. Thank you!

Feliz Navidad!

The most wonderful time of the year has arrived!

Welcoming the spirit of Christmas, the University of the Philippines Los Baños held its annual lighting ceremony entitled Pasko sa Elbi: Isang Pasasalamat on November 19 with the theme Paskuhan sa Barrio.

Attended by students, staff, faculty, officials and residents near UPLB, the night was filled with fun and smiles as the Christmas tree, the Christmas Village, and the Belen was officially lighted on. Check out the highlights of this activity on this video below. Merry Christmas!

To my old self

After months of striving to gather information, to seek details of every event and be involved on various occasions, this semester has really gave me sleepless nights just to figure out how I could provide an article that would cater a specific audience. Looking back, it was really a long, difficult way to become this improved writer; a writer who does not just make articles for submission but seeking first for a purpose and understanding clearly his objectives to give the message properly to his readers.

If I were to go back to the first time I set foot in the College of Development Communication, here are the five tips that I want to give my old self to make him be more prepared as he take the challenges this semester has gave me.

Learn to socialize.

I could remember how my old self was so shy just to interact with his classmates. He would not talk to anybody unless someone would reach out to him. This course required us to communicate with many people, including government officials. In order to do that, I had to brush off this bashfulness of mine just to gather the information that I need.

Read what you’ve just written.

Before, I have a habit of just passing the articles after writing it. I usually get bored whenever I read those. I learned in this course that in order to really provide a quality article, you must not just write but have a time to allot to re-read and search for errors on your article after making it. This is to ensure that the message you want to give your readers is clear to avoid any confusion.

Do not settle on your skills.

My skills back then when it comes to writing mainly involved the techniques used in print media. Although these skills helped me a lot in some exercises, I am being bounded my own knowledge on this area whenever a new form of media is introduced to us. So, to my old self, learn to adopt the techniques used not just in print media. In that way, it would be much easier for you to submit the necessary requirements.

Always bring your smartphone.

A smartphone entails a lot of the tools that are needed in this course. From the camera, to voice recorder, and even taking important notes. So, in order to maximize details that can be gathered, always have your smartphone with you and of course, a powerbank in case your phone becomes low on battery.

Put your passion in DevCom.

Before, what I have in my mind was just to complete this semester. I have no idea how hard it will become. But through this journey, what I realized is you have to put your passion in everything you will do. The rest will follow. Trust me, so much will change and will improve as long as you put your heart in it.

To my old self, I am glad that you have chosen to enter Development Communication. You will experience a lot, and not all of those will leave a smile on your face. Just trust the process, and remember these tips then you will end up to be an improved version of yourself.

UNPLUG

Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes.

With all these academic requirements we have in college, it is almost impossible for one to find time to spend for relaxation. Overloaded with those deadlines, we often just choose to type on our laptops, or just review for the courses we are taking instead of taking time to breathe and have some peace of mind. However, as I begin to grasp the idea of being a college student, one thing that I have realized is that college should be something that should help as grow as individuals, not something that would made us suffer. In relation to this, we as the students should also understand that we still are people who needs to value life, not robots who just follow what others dictate us to do. You have to rest if college stresses you out because almost everything will surely work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, and that includes you.

So, as a college student, how can we unwind and forget our academic problems? Here’s a list of things that might help you if you want to experience a peace of mind, even if it’s just for a short period of time.

Eat The Food You Like

In college, food has been the first thing that always comes to my mind whenever I experience stress. I eat what I want to eat, and treat myself for all the hard works that I did. Sometimes, spoiling yourself could benefit you a lot. There goes the satisfaction, and eventually could result to a better comprehension when doing academic loads, again.

Watch Series

Although I am not really a fan of all the series I see on the internet, I included this on the list as I became more inspired with the characters that were able to excel in their chosen professions. Their depiction of real life scenarios would put you in a rollercoaster ride of emotions, not knowing when or where you’ll stop. It is engaging to follow the lives of the fictional characters, especially if you aspire to be someone like them in the future.

Have Some Alone Time

I enjoy being alone sometimes as it allows me to think of thoughts that I could not make whenever I am around with a group of people. It’s the time where I can talk to myself, weigh the things that I am doing, and breathe for a moment. Maybe that might help you if you want to have some peace, or be away with people that adds and puts pressure to what you are already carrying.

Play The Sports You Like

As someone who enjoys being engaged in physical activities, sports has been one of the things that help me to enjoy my college life so far. It is the time where I could meet new people and do things I normally cannot do on a daily basis. It is a good way to unwind, except the part when you’ll wake up the next day and you have nothing but a body that hurts so bad.

If you’re going to ask me when and how can you allocate some time doing all these stuffs, I really do not know the answer. Instead, just think that this is the last stage of you being a student. After college, you cannot escape the realities of life. So have fun as long as you can, and enjoy as much as you can. Unless you caged yourself with all the stress in academics, you will realize that college is more than learning inside the four corners of the classroom.

DEVCOM LIFE HACK SERIES: 5 TIPS IN SURVIVING DEVCOM EXAMS

The moment you stop believing in yourself, that’s the moment when you’ll start to fail.

After a week of consecutive days of reviewing for the devcom exams, I am left with nothing but the belief that I exerted my utmost effort and I shall not regret with anything after taking them. Now, if you really want to pass the exams in devcom, here are some tips that might help you.

DO NOT CRAM. Cramming won’t benefit you at all. What you will remember the most is the last part of the topic that you reviewed the night before. Exam schedules are given weeks before so you will have a long time to prepare. Maximize the given time and do not hesitate to review even if you are the only one doing it.

LISTEN TO THE LECTURES.  If you are a student who does not want to exert a lot of effort in reviewing your own notes, this tip might help you. Most of the key points are highlighted during lectures. All you have to do is be attentive during discussions and always take down notes. Follow its flow so you won’t get lost.

READ AND UNDERSTAND. Some exams require your own comprehension about a certain topic. And the only way to provide answers for it is to have a critical analysis with your lessons. This tip is not just applicable for reviewing but also to the exam itself. Always read and understand the instructions before answering to prevent yourself from having deductions.

MEMORIZE. As much as I hate memorizing, sometimes, this is just the best way to do in order to survive the exams. In my first exam in DEVC 11, most parts of it are enumeration and identification. So, be sure to memorize every important detail with its meaning to not be confused while answering.

PRAY. Like how the saying goes, “Do your best and God will do the rest.” Always believe in yourself and in Him. Do pray before and after taking the exams, and you will feel the assurance in the results.

An exam will measure your capabilities and knowledge as a student, but it will never define who you are. Overcome the pressure. If there is a person who really knows who you are, it’s you. These tips could help you to survive devcom exams, but you need to give your full efforts if you are aiming to pass. Do not settle for less, aim for the top and soon your name will appear in the list of topnotchers. Good luck!
