Version 2.0

I have been a part of the College of Development Communication for one (1) semester. Definitely, I’ve learned a lot and I think I improved in terms of thinking and finishing tasks. When the semester was just starting, we assessed ourselves as to where we are in terms of qualities and skills of being a media writer. I have given myself high rating in some aspects and low rating in some. However, after knowing the field of devcom better and accomplishing a lot of tasks where we are pushed to our limits, I’ve come to realize that maybe some things have changed and I think that I improved a lot.

Before, I gave myself a two (2) in these following qualities: industrious, persevering, and loves to read. I gave myself a lot of threes (3) but out of all the qualities, I am not convinced with my resourcefulness and I am hesitant to give myself a one (1) rating because I know that I can still improve a lot during my stay in the College of Development Communication.

During Week 2, I gave myself a two (2) rating in all of the skills needed by a media writer except for the proficiency in the operation of communication tools/devices. If I were to choose a skill that I am confident the most is on how I can write clearly and effectively. On the other hand, I gave myself a three (3) in the proficiency of operating the communication tools/devices because deep down I know that I need to improve a lot especially with the complex soft wares and devices that I need to use.

At present, I am happy to say that I can already give myself a higher rating based on the skills and qualities of a media writer. I can already say that I am now more resourceful due to all the activities that we’ve done during the semester. My resourcefulness was tested when unexpected things would happen. I would find solutions so that I could accomplish things. In addition, I improved a lot in terms of processing whether an information is real or not. I also became more imaginative in how would I present my gathered data. Since we’ve been doing a lot of interviews with experts and civilians, my skill in dealing with people had also increased. In terms of my skills, I can say that I am ready to give myself a two (2) in all of them. With the constant reminder in the lecture and application in the lab class, I’ve come to practice and exercise – in that way, I can say that my skills are much better than before. Though gathering data is still a tedious process, validating and clarifying them had been much easier since I am now able to distinguish what works and what does not.

The most practical things that I have learned during the course are to be concise, clear and effective. Be concise – always convey your message in a way that is brief but meaningful. Never let your ideas float around and give information that are not necessary. Be clear – choose your words carefully. Use words that people can understand easily so they get your point right away. Lastly, be effective – always make sure that you get your message across. Devcom is pragmatic. Let us make it a point that what we do is realistic and we expect to gather results from it – positive or negative, but hopefully, positive.

All in all, my experience during the course is an eye-opener to what the next chapter of my Devcom life would be. I am very much excited to explore and see what is in store for me. I hope that my improvements would just be the start and I would still improve so that I can be the best version of myself and I could be an instrument in helping out others that cannot stand up for themselves.

Personal Note

The semester is gearing to an end and there are a lot of things that I have already experienced and learned from. Being in the university for almost 4 months now have been nothing but studying and at the same time having a fun time with new found friends and family. I do not normally speak or talk to myself but if I am given the chance to give myself some advice on how to handle or prepare for the semester, here is what I would tell myself:

Pasko sa Elbi 2019 – Hoping to still participate in campus activities every sem. It helps the mind to breathe and allows us to enjoy for a while.

Dear self,

It has been one hell of a ride. You’ve gone through tough and easy times and I think you have learned a lot from your experiences. You still have many semesters to go before you can finally finish a step in reaching your dreams. However, finishing one sem is still a great achievement especially knowing that you gave it your all. Next semester, you will be facing a lot more and I hope that you will take into account everything that I would tell you. I wish I could’ve told you this during the first day of classes but I didn’t get the chance to do so. So, I am telling you everything now.

Please start the semester with positivity – Having a positive attitude during the sem would help you cope up and see everything in a different light. If you started your sem with a negative attitude and you think that everything you do would fail, eventually you would lose the energy and will to study. Let us not dwell on negativity and try to reimagine things.

Learn to have time for yourself – It is true that sometimes you lose time for yourself because of activities and requirements. However, you should make it a point to still have time for yourself – for you to relax and do the things you want to do. Take a break and enjoy the things you like the most. If you rest once in a while, you’ll feel recharged and have the capacity to do acad things again.

Avoid cramming as much as possible – There will come a time that you will be doing other things instead of things you are supposed to do. Eventually, you’ll have smaller time to complete the tasks and start cramming. The next time around, try to avoid it as much as possible. You would have a much better output and result if you do things ahead of time. In that way, you can still check and review any output or presentation you have.

Never settle for ‘pwede na’ – Sometimes, when we do things, we do it fast and compromise the quality of our work. We settle for things that are ‘pwede na’. We say okay to mediocrity. It does not mean that being mediocre is not okay. But maybe, in everything that you do, you should aim for excellence but make it a point that we got there because of our perseverance and goals.

Save up for later – This comes in two different aspects – money and grades. Sometimes we spend and not think about future expenses. This becomes problematic when we have emergency things to pay for. The next time around, please be wise on how you manage your resources. About grades, as early as possible, fill your bank with positive results so that when the sem will be over, you will not be worried about your grades. You would just sit back and relax and wait for the positive results you have been waiting for.

I am hoping that for the next semesters to come, I would practice my own tips and advice. Being able to study and live in an orderly manner would definitely benefit me. Also, being able to tell myself these things would help me not to repeat the same mistakes again, to achieve better results and to make my family proud.

Lab Class – Even if there are a lot of exercises, we finished it all. Hopefully next time, without cramming.

Pasko sa Elbi 2019

Christmas is something that means very special to me. Christmas is one my favorite holidays during the year. For me, Christmas is filled with love, filled with joy and happiness. The Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony served as a reminder for everyone that there is hope and light amidst all the conflict and chaos that is happening around us. In addition, as a Freshman student, the experience made me feel that I belong to a community. It made me feel happy knowing that I had witness such a momentous event with the whole UPLB Community. This year’s Pasko sa Elbi would be the one I would really treasure since it is my first-hand account of what Christmas is like in Elbi.

What is DevCom?

Even before I entered the university, a lot of people would ask me about my course. I would just respond in a short simple manner since I do not really have an in-depth knowledge about Development Communication. However, as the semester is gearing to an end, some of the most common questions about DevCom are already being answered and taken into account. We hope this video answers your questions and the questions of others as well.

Sleep. Watch. Eat

Long exams. Scores. Grades.

These are just some of the things that students are thinking about during the semester. I’m never really the type of person who gets pressured with these things. I never really think much about it. I just face the things that are before me so that I won’t think about it anymore. I like to get things done right away because I believe that you should make every time you spend worthwhile.

However, after a long day of study and exams and even work, we all deserve to rest and unwind. As a student, I don’t really have a lot of budget to spend for leisure. Most of my allowance is for my daily expenses such as food, jeepney fare and school needs. So, if I want to unwind and de-stress, here are some of the things that I do.

  • Get enough sleep – Reviewing for exams takes up a lot of time especially for sleeping. Based on experience, the best study time for me is before sleeping. So sometimes, if I have an exam the next day, I usually stay up late to study. So, after the exam, to compensate, I get enough sleep and that is one way for me to relieve stress.
  • Watch videos or movies – Since I do not get to watch a lot of videos before an exam, or even if I do, they are all educational videos to help me with my review, I spend a lot of time watching movies and my favorite content creators every after exams. Even if I do not have an exam coming up, I always see to it that I do everything that I have to do including school work so I can set aside time to enjoy and spend time on my phone. I usually watch videos and movies before I sleep.
  • Eat something special or get a treat – When I get to finish an exam, I like to eat something special or get a treat especially ice cream. Even if the result is uncertain, I know I did everything that I could so I deserve a treat – everyone does. But, do not overspend because you might want to treat yourself again after you get the results even if it is either good or bad.

Studying is supposed to make ourselves successful when the future comes. It is not meant to be a torture for students. Once in a while, we should all get to enjoy and feel like a child again. You will never get the chance to enjoy college if all you do is study and bust yourself up without even taking care of yourself once in a while. Acads is important, but your happiness is too.

Role Model of the Year

If you were to ask me who is my role model, I’ll definitely have an answer for you. Role models are those who we look up to and admire. This is about my role model, my instant best friend but most importantly, my sister.

She took up BS Human Ecology and majored in Human Settlements Planning at UPLB. She is a part of Batch 2013 and graduated with Class 2017 as Cum Laude. In addition, she is also an inducted member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. After graduating, she started working at CENRO-San Isidro in Isabela under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources as their Extension Officer. Currently, she is taking up a degree in law and at the same time she still works under DENR.

According to her, UPLB is home – a place of learning, but also the perfect place to destress after all the time spent for learning. She also said that there is nothing that beats the fresh air, the greenery, and the landmarks that make UPLB flawlessly awesome. UPLB will always be a place close to her heart, no matter where she goes. “If there is a place to be, it’s gonna be UPLB,” she added.

The number one learning she had inside UP is that you will not learn everything you need to learn inside the four (4) corners of the classroom. For her, the real learning in UP is experience. She learned in UP that academic standing is not at all determinative of learning. In UP, she learned to agree to disagree because she have understood that different people are diverse, unique and different because of their roots and you cannot get everyone to agree with you. But it matters if you maintain a healthy discussion and intelligent arguments with each other. Above all, HONOR and EXCELLENCE. Rather, Honor before Excellence. As a UP Student, she always made sure that she embodies the ideals of UP to the best of her ability- to keep her integrity and that is how she can best show her excellence.

She said that before she entered UPLB, she was focused on the academic aspect of learning. But as she kept learning, and meeting people who inspires her, she found out that she won’t get the most out of her learning if she stayed in a comfortable, predictable place. When she decided to join her academic organization in her sophomore year, she enjoyed learning even more. She expressed that her organization showed her that there are so many ways to enjoy college life, aside from studying. When she became an officer in her org after joining for merely three (3) months, she had to face obligations that pushed her outside of her comfort zone. Her degree program, BS Human Ecology, deals with sustainable development so they are exposed to the different realities of the world. She added that in their college, they are encouraged to go beyond their limits to be able to understand the complexities of the issues that surround us to be able to provide good solutions.

UPLB opened her mind to the issues that our country is facing. But she is thankful that UP does not end in identifying problems but continues on to inspire students to become part of the solution. UPLB taught her that in every issue, we should be critical and proactive. Moreover, she realized that being part of the change puts so much joy her heart, knowing that she did something for the country. UP taught her to be the voice for those who cannot speak for themselves, and fight for those in the marginalized sectors. She understood better that “action speaks louder than words”.

“Doing something for the country brings more fulfillment than academic achievements. Although, UP showed me that you can excel at both academic excellence and public service. Most importantly, UP made me realized that no matter how rock-bottom your situation is, there is always hope and light after.”

Rozelle M. Bautista

Well, she is my role model and I am very proud of her. How about you? Who do you look up to?

UPCAT Spectator

Passing the University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT) had been my ticket in going into the university. Passing the UPCAT is not only my dream but my family’s dream as well. This year, a new batch of hopeful iskos and iskas embark on their journey to fulfill their dreams.

Being in front of the testing centers while surrounded by examinees and their families brought me back to my UPCAT memories. Parents are everywhere – some are waiting for their children to finish the exam and some are anxious to send their children inside the testing centers. You can feel the tension due to the examinees having their last-minute cramming for information.

When the first batch of examinees went out, the crowd was filled with cheer, with sighs, and most especially telling other examinees how hard the exam was. Being there made me realize how they really wanted to get into the university. It made me think about how I wanted to get into UP in the first place.

Examinees are leaving the exam room with different expressions on their faces. Some are happy and some are confused. Other examinees have still the guts to take pictures with the Oblation – making us laugh and joke around that they still haven’t entered UP and they are already delayed.

According to Gerard Marc Saniel, an aspiring isko from Calamba Institute, the UPCAT questions were hard and were even harder due to time-pressure. He said that he had a hard time recalling his pass lessons but is hoping for a 60% chance in getting into the university. In addition, he said that he took the UPCAT and wants to pass the exam because it was his dream for a long time now. Gerard came with his friends who were also UPCAT takers. Wishing a hopeful isko good luck to pass the UPCAT is already fulfilling for me.

During my time going from testing center to testing center we encountered a lot of examinees together with their friends and families. We even sat with a group of friends telling them about our UP journey and how things were different from high school. Indeed, passing the UPCAT is already a milestone but getting out of the university is a greater one.

The UPCAT is a symbolic exam for it is your gateway to following your dreams. But just a reminder, take the exam because you want to and not because you were asked to. Do not take it for self-recognition but take the opportunity because you want to eventually serve the nation. Mabuhay ang mga iskolar ng bayan para sa bayan!
