The Glow Up

Wow. It’s been five months since I entered the halls of CDC as a student. 18 weeks ago,  I started writing in this blog and now, I am officially crafting my last blog post. As a development-communicator-in-training, the first weeks were far from easy but through the help of my professors and the lessons I have learned inside and outside the classroom, I am happy to leave the semester behind and carry with me the lessons and skills I gained since day 1. I would like to thank every one who has been with me all through out this process. Now, how did I improve anyway?

REWIND: the should have’s

Five months passed by just like that yet the memories of what has been are still vivid in my memory. Birthdays, quizzes, exams (passed or not), deadlines, nightouts and everything. The sem is almost ending and I am about to leave Elbi for a while yet the lessons I have learned will be kept with me and my heart. To my old self, I can no longer turn back the time. However, I believe you did a great job and if ever there is a time machine, here are five things I wish you were able to do 🙂

ONE: Always be updated.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1VIzGOQlAqpaAvFv6AK9JRHFkEkUBkMlQ

As a DevCom student, you will be indulged into A LOT of local, national and international issues. It will be helpful if you are always updated of what is happening around you. In the same way, you can establish your own stand regarding these issues.

TWO: Use a planner.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1VMXUAFLtQyMSGbj5fimf3KRJVHF_LCcm

I know you are not the organized kind of girl but trust me, a planner will come in handy especially when deadlines are starting to pile up and you need to make sure everything has a check behind them. Besides, a planner keeps you motivated.

THREE: Learn to say NO.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1VO4gqEYwhs7gInWbBXyRq0OCzoI_arvn

You’re curious and there are a lot of things to try in college but please, think twice before deciding. Four years (or more) may seem like a short time but the truth is, there will always be a right time for everything. You can always say no especially if you are not that sure and comfortable to things you want try. Pray for it first.

FOUR: Eat healthy.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1VbybGSagtlId5IWay0jXbFeld-hx9r-P

College food has never been healthy especially if all you see outside the university are fastfood chains and you live in a dormitory where you are not allowed to cook. It might be hard to surpass the temptations (and the laziness) but please, take care of yourself. We don’t want you missing any exams just because you’re sick right?

FIVE. Build relationships.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Vif43IytClQyRuhEB58Im9i1gQQmuNYW

I guess this is the most important of all. And by relationships I mean genuine and strong relationships. You will meet a lot of people during your stay and having groups whom you can rely on will be helpful in easing away the homesickness. Besides, UPLB will be your home and what do you have in a home? FAMILY.

Payt Me

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JZsAnb6QDAW_Nobyjj4h2m8zeldOizMX/view?usp=sharing

In UP, every week is “hell week”. Well, university life is very far from being equated with “easy”. More so, the standard we aim to meet inside and outside the university is not something we can achieve in one seating.

As a student, I am honestly poor when it comes to time management. However, I always make sure to provide time for myself in order to prevent the posssiblity of burn out. Here are the top five things I usually do before and after exams:

1. Physical and emotional rest

-I prepare my body especially my mind and heart by spending time alone and meditating on my workload. I usually monitor my status and reflect on the things I missed out so I’ll know where to work harder. I also celebrate my small victories and use them as motivation. Moreover, enough sleep and a healthy diet are highly essential because it helps us endure the physical and mental stress brought about by acads.

After exams, I still take some time alone regardless of what the results are. I spend it on self-reflection and motivation. More importantly, I get back the amount of sleep I lost (even though I never really get enough).

2. Satisfying my cravings

-Before exams, caffeine and sugar dominate my blood stream. As a coffee lover and someone who has a sweet tooth, a day does not pass by without me drinking coffee or eating sweets. When it comes to coffee, I prefer pure instead of the instant one because it really keeps me awake and energized especially when I need to review and finish paperworks. Sweets especially chocolates on the other hand, serve as my reward for myself. Besides, they say that chocolates (especially dark chocolate) is good for the brain.

3. Giving myself time to do the things I love.

-Netflix, books, social media. These are just some of the things I spend most of my free time on. So before and after a busy week, I delve on to entertaining myself through watching movies and series, reading books and getting updates from social media.

4. Talking to my support team.

-Living far away from home is extremely hard especially when circumstances get rough. However, I am blessed to have a strong and loving support system who helps me keep going. My family and friends never fail to motivate me, critique me and celebrate with me on my small victories.

5. Recharging in His abundant grace.

-Lastly, my top secret is not a brand of coffee or a fancy highlighter I use for my notes. Mine is the peace and provision only the Lord can give. It reminds me of my realities and my dreams. This faith, no matter how inconsistent it is in terms of intensity keeps me clinging to the Source. This Source never runs out. This Source has never failed me yet. And this is what I will keep holding on to for the rest of my stay here.

The first sem is almost over. Yet the stress of what is yet to come is already kicking in. However, our lives do not only revolve on the university. What matters is how we balance the time we have for our responsibilities and our physical, mental and emotional health. Remember, we cannot pour from an empty cup.

This is how I chill. This is how I get ready. This is how I fight.

Wayback Wednesdays: featuring Gem Gabertan

With just three years since her graduation, Miss Gem Gabertan’s college experiences are still vivid in her memory. It was 2012 when she entered the halls of the College of Development Communication and 2016 when she marched on the grounds of the Freedom Park with her sablay.

A year after graduation, Gabertan opened her own business and is currently managing Sobremesa – one of the favourite food hubs here in Los Baños.

When asked to describe her UP experience using three words, she said that it was CHALLENGING, EYE-OPENING, and DESENSITIZING. According to her, it was during her college years that she was able to reach a whole new level of maturity and view life in different

Ms. Gem also shared the top three things UP taught her:

1. Don’t procrastinate, but don’t forget to also have fun. Knowing your priorities, and having a balance life is a key.
2. Immerse yourself in the community & always be emphatic.
3. Don’t be afraid of new things, always aim for things/activities that would help you grow, but at the same time never going away with your values & convictions in life.

Keeping in touch with UPLB, she is now serving ‘good food’ to students and employees through her own business: Sobremesa.

UPCAT in three words: featuring Mark Christian Calabia

https://drive.google.com/a/up.edu.ph/file/d/1DSM7goPDtvuOWY8pBPOT1k1PtZftfipX/view?usp=drivesdk

Waking up early and travelling for not less than 2 hours, Mark Christian Calabia of Tiaong Quezon is one of the thousands of applicants who took the University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT) 2019 in UPLB last October 5, 2019. Calabia is an 18-year-old STEM student of Recto Memorial National High School who wishes to enter UPM and be a Dentistry student. He was scheduled for the morning session of the first day and came to LB with his schoolmates. UP according to him, will open a wide scale of opportunities that is why he took the chance despite the pressure and expectations from everyone especially his parents. Christian shared to us that he started preparing for UPCAT since summer but only had the chance to review lately. Struggled with a limited time, he rated his confidence of passing the UPCAT by 4 out of 10.

In three words, Christian described his UPCAT 2019 experience as…

HARD. Although he has access to various reviewers and resources, the amount of schoolwork he faced left him with a limited time to review that is why he had a hard time answering the questions.

TIRING. Christian joked about how UPCAT massacred all of his brain cells. Can totally relate with this one.

Yet…

FUN. Although the exam was hard and tiring, he still felt the fulfillment and joy upon finishing the test. Just like what he said, He survived. And it was enough to be happy.
