A self-assessment on my qualities and skills as a media writer

In all honesty, I believe that there is a need to further improve and develop my qualities and skills as a media writer. I say so because after answering the self-assessment survey, I had an average score of 2.9 on my qualities as a media writer while on my skills as a media writer I had an average score of 3.2. Out of all ten qualities of a media writer, I realized that my best qualities lean towards my love and interest to people and being service-oriented. On the other hand, out of all five skills of a media writer, I believe that I am most expert in terms of proficiency in the operation of communication tools and devices.

And the reason being?

I guess I just love people. I love to hear their stories, especially those that are intimate and personal because it means that they trust you enough with whatever information they share to you. And for me, that means a lot. As a media writer, I would like to write stories from people that are worth sharing. May it be a progress in the community projects, or a newly adapted technology in the farm; I believe that I’m more than happy to write their stories and let other people on the other side be informed about it.

On the skills set on the other hand, what I wrote in the survey was, “I think it’s the proficiency in the operation of communication tools and devices. I say so because I’ve already familiarized myself with tech devices throughout my life as a student.” I guess this is all thanks to the generation that I am in, which is the digital age, where we are expected to use technology in almost everything. During high school, we were fond of using Office software in making papers, slide presentation, and spreadsheets/tables. Through the years, we began using online platforms such as Google Docs so that we can do our projects at the same time without meeting up in one place. Also, we were already introduced to softwares like Adobe Photoshop and Canva in editing pictures and making posters or publicity materials. Being able to learn how to used these communication tools/devices is really helpful for me as a college student. There is more ease in making the projects in terms of getting it done and working in a group.

Are there things to improve?

Out of all ten qualities of a media writer, I believe that I need to improve on my reading skills. In the survey I wrote, “I need to work the most on reading because it’ll be essential for the development of my writing style and vocabulary.” Reading affects how you organize your thoughts and the way you write. Your word choice and sentence structure are influenced by reading. It is then evident in your written works if you are not reading enough. Admittedly, I’m still not fond of reading. I need to improve this skill the most because my degree program will entail a lot of reading and writing. In the future, I wish to include reading as part of my daily hobbies so that my level of vocabulary and writing skills will improve.

On the other hand, out of all five skills of a media writer, I believe that I need to improve the most on organizing information and writing clearly and effectively. In the self-assessment survey, I wrote “I need to work the most on organizing information and writing clearly and effectively. When it comes to writing, I find it hard to gather my thoughts and write them clearly, like it gets scattered in my mind and sometimes I can’t put it to words.” I believe that having difficulties in these aspects stems from the fact that I don’t write in a regular basis aside from having poor vocabulary. Which is why, in the future I would like to include writing as part of my daily hobbies too in order to improve the skill.

Among the qualities listed, which quality would be the one that you need to work on the most? Why?

The quality that I need to work on the most is the quality of being industrious. With this quality, all the other qualities are at stake. If I will manage to improve this quality, everything else will follow.

Given your ratings, what keeps you from getting that 1.00 self-rating?

I know to myself that I lack the ability to achieve the 1.00 self-rating because of what I’m practicing right now. In connection with my answer to the previous question, my absence of the quality of being industrious affects my performance on everything. To be able to get the highest rating for myself, it would mean that I will be able to perform a certain task perfectly and correctly.

Skills of a Media Writer

  1. Gathering Data – 3

2. Validating and classifying information – 2

3. Organizing information – 2

4. Writing Clearly and effectively – 3

5. Proficiency in the communication tools/devices – 2

Among the skills listed, which skill have you developed the highest competency? What contributed to the development of that skill?

I developed the highest competency with the skill in proficiency in the communication tools/devices. I think that it developed because at a young age, I was able to own a cellphone with camera and voice recording capabilities. Because of that, I started to learn about technology more as time pass by.

Among the skills listed, which skill would be the one that you need to work on the most to develop? Why?

I need to improve my skills in writing clearly and effectively because I know that when I write an article or an essay, most of the time I lose track of the objectives that I need to follow. I also lack the knowledge in using complicated words that I have to search it in the internet just to make sure that I used it right. Left with a little variety of common English words to use, it sometimes causes me repeat in using them again that makes my writing bad. I really need to work with this skill.

Assessing Oneself

Among the qualities listed, which quality would be the one that you need to work on the most? Why?

I think the quality that I need to work on the most is number 9, which is “Interested in and loves people”, since I find it hard to approach people. I’m very shy and I lack the confidence needed to interact and create bond with other people, especially if it’s my first time meeting them. This is a real struggle for me since interacting with others is needed to conduct interviews or gather various information.

Given your ratings, what keeps you from getting that 1.00 self-rating?

I see myself as an average person. I don’t think I excel in anything, it may be because of my lack of confidence. Also, I know for myself that there should always be room for improvement, and that there’s still a lot for us to discover and learn.

Among the skills listed, which skill have you developed the highest competency? What contributed to the development of that skill?

Validating and clarifying information, since I know how vital it is to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the information that you’re giving out to avoid confusion, misunderstanding, and ambiguity. It’ll be a huge waste of time for the reader if the information that their receiving is not actually true.

Among the skills listed, which skill would be the one that you need to work on the most to develop? Why?

I think I should develop my skills on writing clearly and effectively. To be honest, writing is not really my genre, words doesn’t just come out easily. Before entering this course I knew to myself that I’ll struggle so much since this course requires lots of reading and writing, but instead of letting the opportunity pass I just took it as a challenge. That I need to grow and come out of my comfort zone, and that I should work extra hard for me to accomplish everything.

Writing is damn hard

One of the first qualities mentioned in our class was being inquisitive. I can say that it’s a sign for me that I need to work on it more since it has been one of my weaknesses as a writer. I tend to just accept the information given to me and I rarely dig deeper just because I know I already have enough yet digging deeper could make it better. I guess when I was little I was told not to pry on other people’s lives or ask “too many” questions because sometimes it may seem impolite and it sort of manifested in my young adulthood.

Being a media writer or a writer in general isn’t easy. Constant changes and improvement is a prerequisite for a good writer. I guess that’s what keeps me from acknowledging to myself that I am already good at something. I like to say that I always have room for improvement and that being an expert at something is too boring. I’d like to constantly learn something new and enjoy my little victories.

A media writer must have certain competencies or level of expertise. I’d like to think of these competencies not as my area of expertise but as something I have learned constantly and I apply without fail (sometimes). Validating and clarifying information is a must skill not just for a media writer but for every person. This should be practiced by all especially now with the boom of social media and unlimited access to information, it is easy to be deceived. I can say that I am competent at clarifying and validating information because not only is it applied in my everyday life but also it gives me a sense of credibility and honesty.

And lastly, a media writer does not write alone. He/she also operates media tools and devices that help facilitate one’s work. It could either help improve your work or it could ruin it based on how one utilizes it. This is a skill I really need to work on because I want to properly showcase my work or send my message in the article through the aid of media tools and devices. Media tools and devices are a big help for anyone who wants their writings to be heard.

As a Media Writer

As I have written before, writing is what sets my soul on fire. But then I realized I write not knowing who my audience is. As my development communication journey continues I realize a lot of things and one of which is that for me to become an effective development communicator I must be resourceful. Gone were those days of spoon-feeding information unto me. This time I will seek for first-hand information by myself. At first of course it is indeed difficult but I know through time I will improve this quality of a media writer.

Quality alone is not the only thing that matters. Skill likewise is essential. Among the five skills namely: Gathering data; Validating and clarifying information; Organizing information; Writing clearly and effectively; and Proficiency in using communication tools, I find it easy to write clearly and effectively because as I have mentioned, I write whenever inspiration strikes me.

On the other hand, the skill I must improve the most is of course gathering data since I am not that resourceful and I am used with the environment where I get easily what I need. I remember this one time that my DEVCOM11 lecture professor told us that “if you got the information easily, there’s something wrong with it.” Well she’s correct about that. For your story or article to be credible you must assess the sources to which you got the information. I needed to bear that in mind because this time around, I am not just writing for leisure rather I am writing facts and articles that are going to be published and be consumed by the masses.

I still have a long way to experience and I know I still have a lot to learn about being a development communicator who will be able to help uplift the marginalized and the underprivileged. I may be the weakest one now but I will aim that I at the end of the journey I will be the most improved.

Pending…

Among the qualities listed, which quality would be the one that you need to work on the most? Why?

I want to engage myself more in reading different kinds of materials that is not limited to fictional books such as academic writings or essays. It is often said that to be able to become a better writer, one must learn to love reading. I believe that reading will broaden my knowledge about various topics and help me become an effective writer and communicator.

Given your ratings, what keeps you from getting that 1.00 self-rating?

I think that a rate of 1.00 for a quality I possess is too much since I have more things to learn and improve. I have to be honest to myself to be able to know which of my qualities I should enhance so a perfect point to any of the category is not yet for me.

Among the skills listed, which skill have you developed the highest competency? What contributed to the development of that skill?

Living in a modern generation, I learned the importance different technologies so it is a great advantage to have knowledge about this stuff. My experiences in high school developed my skill when it comes to operation communication tools/devices and I am still learning to become better in this field.

Among the skills listed, which skill would be the one that you need to work on the most to develop? Why?

I want to improve my writing skills because I am well aware that my skill is below average since I am not capable of doing an eloquent and engaging output.

Among the qualities listed, which quality would be the one that you need to work on the most? Why?

A persevering media writer must continue despite the possible challenges that may challenge his or her goals. Perseverance is the quality that I need to work on the most. There were times in the past wherein I chose goals that we’re easier to achieve instead of taking the risks and taking a harder but better path. Roadblocks shouldn’t hinder me from pursuing greater lengths and having better accomplishments.

Given your ratings, what keeps you from getting that 1.00 self-rating?

Intelligence- I have my own strengths when it comes to logic and analysis but I believe experiences also affects how one thinks and processes information. I consider experience, not as an obstacle but rather a stepping stone towards the improvement of my intelligence.

Industrious, Resourceful, and Imaginative- I am quite confident in these areas but I realized how much these qualities can still improve as I write more.

Among the skills listed, which skill have you developed the highest competency? What contributed to the development of that skill?

I developed the highest competency in being proficient in the operation of communication tools/devices. The ability to use different devices and apps have become more common and less niche. My school works in the past few years required different skills such as layout designing, photo editing, and video editing. These led me to learn these skills myself in order to do these different tasks.

Among the skills listed, which skill would be the one that you need to work on the most to develop? Why?

I need to develop the skill of writing clearly and effectively. Writing has always been one of my skills that needed improvement throughout the years. My main problem is writing pieces that are both coherent and cohesive.

A Work in Progress

Every one of us is a work in progress and that, of course, includes me. The importance of self-assessment is knowing your current standing and what you need to improve in order to be better. One thing I need to work on is my perseverance in doing certain tasks, for I tend to leave things be whenever I get mental-blocked or ‘exhausted’ until I forget about it and cram.

Procrastination is indeed something I need to kiss goodbye.

Being a BS Development Communication student, there are certain skills that you must possess; from gathering of data to having the utmost proficiency in the operation of communication tools/devices.

Among those skills, I could say that data gathering is one thing I can do best due to having the personal trait of being an observant person. The one that I need to work on the most is writing clearly and effectively. As a development communicator, it is the most essential characteristic a writer must possess and enhance in order to be deemed credible and great.

“Easy reading is damn hard writing.”

Nathaniel Hawthorne

My goal as a Development Communication student is to work on my writing skills, for I want my readers to be able to understand my works without feeling a single speck of confusion as they read.

Pending….. A Media Writer

A media writer have certain qualities and skills to master in order to become an effective one. Some may be innate, but some may be developed.

Curious of Inquisitive I rated myself 2 in being curious or inquisitive since I tend to ask questions whenever there is something I can’t understand or want to understand. I tend to annoy people for my series of questions about something. I became anxious whenever there is something I want to know but there’s no answer for that.

Intelligent I can say that I am quite intelligent in a sense that I always use my common sense in solving something logically and analytically. I also don’t settle for something that is only based on opinions, I see to it that the information I will share to everyone is supported by facts.

Industrious In the aspect of being industrious, I can say that I am in 2 since sometimes I will let my laziness take over me. However, most of the time, I finish my responsibilities first among anything.

Resourceful In the area of resourcefulness, I am only 3 since I tend to settle for less whenever I found already a way, instead of digging deeper. My shyness hinders me to find additional facts about something.

Persevering I can say that I am quite a persevering person since I don’t let my failures consume the best of me. I always condition myself to rise whenever I fall and see straight towards my goal.

Imaginative I am not quite an imaginative person because I tend to focus only on what’s in front of me instead of looking for another ways.

Puts a premium on accuracy and truth Since I was a student journalist in elementary up to high school, I develop the ability to put accurate and truthful information to whatever I write. It is very important since I want my readers to know that I am a reliable writer.

Loves to read I developed a habit of reading since I was a child. I read almost every genre of books ranging from educational to non-fictions. There is a certain contentment in me whenever I read books which caught my interest.

Interested in and loves people I grew up in a community where everyone is my friend and my family, that’s why I love people. I love the feeling of helping other people and building rapport with them. That’s the main reason why I took up devcom.

Service-oriented I am driven by my vision of helping other people, especially the marginalized ones. I can say that I am a service-oriented person since I always put their priorities over everything. Everything that I do as a development communicator-in-training is for them.

I can say that among these characteristics of what a development communicator-in-training should have, I should improve on the aspect of being resourceful. Since I was a child, I am shy in approaching people, thinking that I will embarrass myself. Growing up, I stayed the same. With this attitude, I develop a habit of settling for less instead of finding alternative ways. I hope that throughout my journey in devcom, I will develop myself and go out of my comfort zone to find growth and improvement in myself.

Gathering data Being a student journalist in my elementary and high school years helped me develop my skill in gathering data. I am used to interviewing respondents since I am a sports writer back in my student journalist days.

Validating and clarifying information I can say I am a 2 in this since I have inhibitions when validating and clarifying information, my shyness being the main reason. However, I always condition myself to step out of my comfort zone in order to put accurate and reliable information.

Organizing information I am not quite skilled in organizing information since I have a hard time writing down information in just one place. I wrote them in different notebooks or journals that I sometimes lost. I also sometimes jumbled data when I’m writing that’s why I had a hard time finding certain information.

Writing clearly and effectively In this aspect, I can also say that I lack the skill of doing so since sometimes I can’t construct sentences the way I want it to be. My ideas are scattered in my mind that I don’t know what to write and where to start my thoughts.

Proficiency in the operation of communication tools/devices I can say that I have enough knowledge in operating communication tools/devices since I was exposed to them during my journalism days.

I know that there are qualities and skills that I lack in, but I am always open for improvements throughout my journey as a devcom student. And I know, these improvements will make me a better development communicator-in-training.

A Media Writer, am I?

Anong the qualities listed, which quality would be the one that you need to work on the most? Why?

I need to work on my resourcefulness, as I myself know that I tend to get stuck on problems that could be solved faster were I able to work the situation and my environment to my advantage more.

Given your ratings, what keeps you from getting that 1.00 self-rating?

I am my own worst enemy. I give up and put myself down out of fear, keeping myself from getting that 1.00 self-rating.

Among the skills listed, which skill have you developed the highest competency? What contributed to the development of that skill?

Out of all the skills, I’ve developed writing clearly and effectively the most as I’ve been writing consistently over the years, and was once part of our school’s publication.

Among the skills listed, which skill would be the one that you need to work on the most to develop? Why?

I would like to develop validating information more, as I feel that this is one of the most important skills to have as a DevCom student.
