Highlighting culture during “KASskwela”

Melodies of rich heritage resonated the Multi-Purpose Center as students and teachers of Los Baños gracefully performed different cultural presentations during the “KASskwela: Kultura, Awit, at Sayaw pampa-Kuwela ng mga Estudyante” last September 20, in line with the celebration of the 18th Bañamos Festival.

Twenty-one (21) schools from Elementary to Senior High showcased their talents through various acts of traditional dances and songs – Pandanggo, Singkil, and Jota Batangueña to name a few – highlighting the rich Philippine culture.

Franco del Castillo, Head Organizer of the program, said in an interview, “Sa panahon ngayon medyo bihira ang ganitong pagtatanghal, layunin ng Department of Education (DepEd) na maimulat ang mga estudyante [sa mga okasyong] nagpapakita ng kulturang Pilipino… para malaman nila ang ating kulturang pinagmulan.” Castillo also described that students engaged in providing cultural presentations enabled them to relive the past.

In an interview with Maria Luisa Mojado, DepEd Representative from the Los Baños district office, she stated that the program helps students and the youth to become aware of the Philippine culture. Mojado added that the nation’s culture is important and that it should not be forgotten, rather it be promoted.

One student from Los Baños National High School emphasized the importance of knowing our local and national culture as a reflection of our history and how it has shaped Filipino identity. “Sa kasaysayan niya man, mula noon hanggang ngayon, ang kultura ang nagsilbing paraan upang tayo ay makilala bilang ‘diverse’ na bansa,” he stated. “May iba’t-iba tayong kultura na nagpapakita ng mga kayamanan ng pinanggalingan nila.

The program is one of the activities conducted in this year’s Bañamos Festival which commemorates the establishment of the municipality; exhibiting its history and defining itself as “The Science and Nature City”.

Himigsikan 2019: Rocking the boundaries

Lights flashing, crowd cheering, guitar tuning, rock & rolling.

The 18th celebration of Bañamos Festival upholds the 18th year of Himigsikan: Battle of the Bands – an annual event showcasing different rock bands within the vicinity of CALABARZON. Different bands singing various genres try to compete and clash not only for the fat prize but also to pursue their burning passion for music and give entertainment to the people of Los Baños.

This year, a total of eight bands did their showdown on stage namely Piratang Banda, Pentatonica, Ricochet, Rebolusyonaryo, Musika Rizal, Kuya J, Maria Band & FTMT. Full of pride and energy, they performed three sets of songs: R&B, reggae and their own composition which enticed and hyped up the whole crowd.

“Ayos naman. Masaya kasi maganda yung mga naglalaban lagi eh.” Brix Tyron Labitan, one of the audience, stated; proving that the program held was worthwhile and very much catered what the audience desires.

Initially, Himigsikan was just exclusive for the people of Los Baños, but as time passed by, the organizers allowed the event to be inclusive of other aspiring bands from the different areas of CALABARZON to join the competition. “Maraming talented sa LB, pero nagkataon lang din na inopen na nila sa iba.” Andrei Panaligan, one of the judges, stated.

According to one of the organizers of the event, Ms. Astrid Silo, the aim is to unite the people of Los Baños through music, introduce different musicians across CALABARZON, and at the same time, give leisure to its locals.

Overall, as part of the Bañamos Festival, Himigsikan not only wants to unite the people and spread musicality, but its main objective was to tear down the walls, ignite the fire and rock the boundaries.

by: Mia Bueta, Christine Casido, and Catherine Uy

Amidst the gloomy weather, the General Paciano Rizal Park was still jampacked with people on the night of September 19 at 6:00 in the evening. The people were patiently waiting for the annual Bailamos Dance Contest: Make Your Move, which is one of the most awaited activities in the known Bañamos Festival, in celebration of its 18th year anniversary, held in Los Baños, Laguna.

The main goal of Bailamos is to showcase the different talents not just of Los Baños locals but also other towns around Laguna as well. However, this year most of the contestants were from Calamba and Los Baños only. Top priority of this event said by Mr. Jonathan Natividad, OIC in Los Banos Tourism, is the safety of the contestants, so as much as possible death defying stunts are prohibited.

The group should have at most 15 members with the age range of 16 years old and above. Each group should not exceed to five minutes and must showcase street style, hiphop, locking, etc. Dangerous stunts are strictly prohibited. Moreover, dance, steps, body movements, choice of music are signs of morality and good conduct, stated by Mr. Natividad.

This year’s set of judges are Mr. Pinch Araneta, Mr. Jayson Lagrada and Mrs. Jocelyn Ann Luna. Expectations from this year’s contestants are higher as Mrs. Luna said, “last year judge rin ako dito, so dapat mas level up ang performance nila”, and the contestants did not disappoint.

There are a total of 10 contestants who joined this year’s competition. But among the groups, only three have met beyond the judges’ expectations, namely: Nazty Boys (2nd runner-up), Scammaz (1st runner-up), and G7 (Champion).

Having the least number of members, G7 still managed to win the judges’ heart through strictly following the criteria. Clean dance moves, safe stunts and facial expressions are what made them stand out. Bringing home 20,000 cash prize and certificate, half of this will be given to their parents to give back as being their inspiration, stated by Mark Justine Likayman, one of the members of G7. Their win was unexpected for they are just newly formed last March and it was their first time joining the dance battle.

Scammaz bagging the special award, Dancer of the Year.

After all the performances, a unity dance was presented showcasing the 10 groups in one dance number. A special award was given to Scammaz, the group who won 1st runner up, as the Dancer of The Year.

In celebration of the 404th founding anniversary of Los Baños Laguna, the annual Bailamos Dance Contest is a great opportunity for the youth to showcase their talents in dancing as stated by Mr. Natividad. The event has highlighted the culture of the people of Los Baños as their supportiveness and loud cheers were evident throughout the evident.

A Night for its People

Talent, I believe is one of God’s greatest endowments to mankind. With the talents that we have we are able to inspire, influence and empower our fellowmen. Talents enable us to relate ourselves to others but in the same way it makes us all unique as individuals.

The third-year celebration of the People’s Night Extreme was indeed for its people. Many of the talented Lagunense were featured in the said event including Gwapito’s Dancers, Miss Ramonne, DJ M Beatboxer and Jason Fernandez. The band Allmost who authored the famous songs “Bagay Tayo” and “Dalagang Pilipina” also gave their best performance for their fellow Lagunense. The whole night of performances brought smiles and laughter from the audience who were amused by the talents that the performers have showcased.

Here is our output article.

“Napo-promote kasi dun yung active citizenship nila. Naiinvolve kasi sila sa activities ng baranggay. Nagkakaroon sila na kumbaga sa atin ay yung pagiging patriot nila kasi they take pride lalo na kapag nanalo sila,” ani Manansala.

As Development Communication students, we were tasked to cover the recently concluded Bañamos Festival. Our team chose the People’s Night Extreme held last September 19, 2019 at Paciano Park as the story to be reported. Being a first-time field reporter I experienced things that never have I thought would be my career path. Staying up late at night, going to unfamiliar places, meeting people from all walks of life and interviewing authorities in order to establish the article we need was something I have never foreseen. When I was a child I really just enjoyed speaking in front of a large crowd. I am delightful of the scene where everyone is listening to what I was talking about because I feel empowered despite of being young. I realized that I have a talent of confidently speaking; I have a voice – one that is God given.

During our news coverage, I now deeply understand what it takes to be a development communicator. Although it is quite tough and it was not what I used to be doing; I love the idea of being able to extend the news to the people – being of service to them.

That has been a night of many first experiences. For me it was a night to remember for it was where I’ve realized that with the God given talent I have [now a skill] I should be able to use it for its purpose. If God had given me a voice then maybe I should use it to uplift those who have none.
