de-stress

1.Make time for a creative outlet

Doing something non-acad related activities such as painting, photography, or baking can really take away your stress. Making time for your hobbies are a great way to unwind and chill while also being productive. Personally, I find painting and sketching really relaxing.

2. Have your well-deserved comfort food

Whether it be ice cream or chicken wings, eating your favorite food can really ease your worries and relieve your stress. Indulging in your cravings is a fail-safe way to de-stress and lighten up your mood.

3.Sleep

College students are often sleep-deprived. This contributes a lot of the stress that we are experiencing, so make sure that you catch up on sleep once you’re done with your tasks.

Palamig ka muna

For some, entering college (UP) is like digging your own grave. It will test your limits in physical, emotional and mental health. Exams, papers, quizzes and other requirements will exhaust you so it is a must that you know how to give yourself a break.

There are many ways to treat yourself but here are some that are proven and tested by yours truly:

Communicate

Your family and friends are always behind your back to support you. It is okay to open up and vent out all the things that makes you feel bad. Communication will not only make you feel better but will bring you closer to them as well.

Stressed=Desserts

Don’t have a second thought on buying that sweets! We all have our favorite foods but desserts are the ones that make our moods lighter. Chocolates, cakes or milktea, go grab it ‘cos you deserve it.

Watch/Listen/Read

These three activities are good escape from reality. Crossing-out an episode from a series you are watching, reading a new book or dancing to a good music will make you forget all the deadlines even for just a short period of time. Doing these three will give you that rollercoaster ride for an hour or two.

Go for a Stroll

Elbi is a very beautiful place to de-stress (how ironic right?). Just feel the heat of the sun or the cold breeze at night and let your mind wander. Take a walk and observe what people are doing and you’ll find peace in them.

Sleep

Of course the best thing to give yourself after beating the deadlines is a good sleep. This is the way to rest both of your mind and body. After good hours of sleep, you’ll find yourself more focused and productive for the rest of the day.

Pillow, Strings, and Ice Cream

Once upon a time, there is a cute college student named Nicca. She was cramming the night before her exam, making her very stressed. Actually she always crams. Good thing she knows how to chill out in three simple ways. You definitely know it just by looking at the title.

Sleeping

I will not be too flowery with words anymore. It’s just that sleeping is the best way to chill out. Nothing is more comfortable than lying down on your bed, with at least two soft pillows and a clean blanket. Oh, of course with an electric fan. I even do sleep when I feel sad, stressed, bored, hungry, or tired. Sleeping is also good for the health.

Reminder: Do not sleep if you have a lot to do! You’ll freak out by the time you wake up, I swear!

Playing Musical Instruments

As a music lover, I really find it relieving when I play musical instruments. When I feel like panicking, I take a deep breath and reach out for my ukulele and strum it, play with it, or even write songs. Afterwards, I’d feel calm. For me, music has healing powers.

Ice Cream Treat!

Every time I finish a stressful work , I really give myself an ice cream treat. I don’t really mind the brand as long as it’s cold and sweet. Usually I buy from a convenience store or on YMCA (beside Men’s Residence Hall). It helps me feel relaxed and happy at the same time. Try it for yourself! 🙂

Have a break, have a kitkat

“College is like looking both ways before you cross the street and then getting hit by an airplane.”

Yes, college is no joke. It’s either going to make you or break you. With all these, exams, papers, and quizzes happening in one go, it can really be mentally draining. Now the question is, how do we chill out?

ALWAYS HAVE TIME FOR YOURSELF

You shouldn’t drown yourself with work all the time. Never forget to spare some time to do the things that you love. Learn to focus on yourself sometimes, instead of focusing all your attention to your workload.

EAT YOUR HEART OUT

Stress eating? That’s pretty normal in college. Eat, eat and eat! If it comforts you to the point that you feel better, then never skip a meal. Also, snack all you want!

PRAY

Prayer is the food for the soul. Never forget the one who got you to where you are now, and the one who helped you cope up with your struggles. Talk to God and also listen to what he has to say.

CHILLAX KA MUNA SIS!😎

College is never easy. It will surely test our physical, emotional, and mental capability. Unlike High School, College is extra extra hard for it has so many requirements, readings, quizzes, and exams in just a single day. Being a college student thought us how to multitask in a different level knowing we’ll finish all our outputs in one night.

We all experience heavy loads, I know that some of us wants to quit already, some of us doesn’t have regular sleep, ruin body clock. I know that you are tired. I know the feeling of having sleepless nights because of finishing tons of paper works and readings just to pass the course, or some of us just want to end the semester already.

This might not be effective for all, but it is for me, once you satisfy your craving and your tummy. It feels like you are reenergized as if you now can finish tons of papers in a single seat. Comfort food will throw away all your anxiety (not all).

It is really recommended to have a support system it’s either your siblings or your friends. Let’s be all real, we don’t usually share detailed things to our parent (some do). It is great to have a friend to talk to after a long day, a long week, a long month, a long year. It is great to have someone that understands you, doesn’t judge you, will always be by your side through ups and downs.

I assure you that if you have someone to talk to about your rants, your problems, it will lessen the burden in your heart. There should be a friend that you trust with your problems.

If your world is toxic, find a place for yourself wherein you can go there anytime whenever you feel sad and lonely. It is also great to be alone, sometimes, in some cases. Being alone let’ you think and reminisce all you’ve done for the past months or years. You will have a self-meditation wherein you have to figure out what is wrong. It is sometimes okay to talk to yourself and analyze the year before you let it out to your friend.

At times you feel sad and you feel the world is against you, find your safe place and let all your burden out. Shout if you must. Cry if you want, as long as you’ll stop and continue living.

This is the number 1 thing you should do if you want to relax, talk to Him. He is your friend that will never leave you through ups and downs. He will be there for you if you need someone to talk to (not physically). He will be that friend who will love you no matter how much a failure you are. He is the friend that will guide you through your journey as a college student. NEVER LOOSE HOPE IN HIM.

Chill ka lang…

College is not easy. It will surely test your patience and perseverance. With a heavy workload, it can be considered exhausting. Sometimes, the best option is to acknowledge you’re tired and you have to take a break.

But… how do we take a break?

Here are some tips on how to chill and to set aside your academics for a while:

HAVE SOMETHING TO EAT

Grab a snack after a long time studying. Get your favorite chocolate to ease the stress for a while. Munch some cereals for you to have something in your belly. Besides, it’s hard to think if you have an empty stomach.

TAKE A SHOWER

Freshen up for you to feel better. When you’re comfortable, it will improve your mindfulness. It can also uplift your mood that can help you concentrate better.

GET SOME SLEEP

Stop if you feel overwhelmed. After reviewing for some time, take a nap. You can retain a lot of information if you’re well-rested.

CONVERSE WITH YOUR LOVED ONES

Most importantly, find strength in the people you love. They will serve as an inspiration for you to finish the job. When you’re tired and unmotivated, talk to them about how you feel; they will surely spark the energy to keep you going.

How Do You Chill?

How Do You Sleep GIF by Sam Smith - Find & Share on GIPHY

The college experience has only begun for our freshman students, and it’s only going to be more challenging in the years to come. With deadlines and exams on the horizon, how do we keep our cool?

Take a breather

Although the pressure of doing well in academics is real, it’s important to remember that you have your limits as a human being.

We often hear “ang tulog nababawi, ang grades hindi” – but does not resting really benefit us in the long run? According to Healthline, sleep deprivation puts all of your body systems at risk – making you more vulnerable to mood swings, flu, heart diseases, and more.

But we’ve heard that narrative time and again, and we can just recover our sleeping hours later. Why maintain sleep, then?

During waking hours, well-rested people can think on their feet more quickly. This is especially important for exams and unannounced quizzes. Being well-rested can also put you in a better disposition – that’s why you often hear “wala sigurong tulog ‘yan, ‘no?” when people spot others who are grumpier and more irritable than usual.

Especially in a course that specializes in working with people, you’d want to have enough energy to have good interactions with them.

So when you feel that you’re at your limit, freshen up. Take a bath. Eat. Sleep if you need to. Just remember to set an alarm – if you can’t trust yourself to wake up on time, keep practicing.

Do what you like doing

If you don’t think that sleeping will help you relax, allow yourself to engage in activities that you enjoy doing. If you have any hobbies – such as singing, playing an instrument, making art, playing a sport – bring them out!

The reason why I can confidently suggest this now is because I found myself (and my friends) scrolling through social media despite wanting to use the time to work. If you’re not in a state of mind ready to work, you’re not going to get anything done.

The mind has its ways of diverting attention away from what it considers stressors. If you can’t use the time to work, you might as well do things that you particularly enjoy. Chances are that if you’re in a good disposition after doing the things that you like, you’ll be glad to have found time for yourself, and you’ll get back to the workspace more energized.

Take a step back

If rest isn’t enough to get you back on track, there might be something else that’s bothering you. Did you forget something? Did something happen today that upset you? Do you need to let something out?

If so, it’ll help a lot to take a step back and piece things together. Try to make sense of what puzzles you. Did you know that you can also use the problematique method in your own life? Try it if you haven’t yet. Chances are that you’ll find something that you weren’t able to see before – but know which things are in your control.

And if you can’t do it on your own, that’s all right. Different people have different needs. Call a trusted friend if you need to. Study together, or just hang out. What’s important is that you’re eventually able to get yourself back on track.
