Girl, I’m Telling You

My first semester in the university was indeed one hell of a roller coaster ride. There were times when I just want to scream as loud as I can to release all the negative energy. I admit that all these that just happened was not what I expected it to be. I know for a fact that UP life is hard, but I didn’t know that it would be THIS hard. However, I still have no regrets, and for surviving, I congratulate myself.

To you Thresha at the beginning of first semester,

Do what you can do today.

I’m not saying that you should finish all your assignments already. What’s important is that you were able to at least start doing them so that when the deadline comes, you will not be pressuring yourself because of cramming and multitasking. If you feel tired to start anything, rest for a while and after that, go on with what you need to do.

Take care of your health.

Do not be hard-headed. Take the advice from your family and friends. Reduce your intake of softdrinks and junk foods for they are not good for your kidneys. Make sure to drink lots of water and get enough sleep.

Do not just keep everything to yourself.

You have a lot of people around you who cares about you. If you are feeling something heavy inside, go and tell them. Sharing your problems to someone may not solve everything but at least it will lessen the heaviness that you feel. Do not suffer alone.

Continue doing what makes you happy.

No matter what other people will say, if it makes you happy, there’s no turning back. Do not doubt yourself whether you are good enough or not. It’s your passion and no one should stop you from doing it. If it makes you happy, and as long as it does not affect your studies, trust me, you are doing the right thing.

Just be yourself.

You do not have to prove anything to anyone. I am already proud of you for being where you are now. Keep on fighting, Iska! You still have a long way to go.

SMART: Survival Tips for DevCom Exams

Firstly, these tips are for those who have short-term memory. Just to share with you, I was diagnosed with depression last year and I had to take meds, which eventually resulted into poor information retention as its side effects. It is quite hard, especially you’re in the University of the Philippines. But there’s no need to be afraid! I did survive and you, too, can make it!

Now, I don’t know if these will work for you but I just wanted to help those who are just like me. Even if we aren’t like those who are good at memorizing stuffs, all we need to remember in preparing for DevCom exams are these SMART tips.

S – Scribble down notes while you are on lecture classes.

Since we are not good in retaining information in our heads for a long time, we must not waste time during discussions. While listening to the lecture professor, take down important notes. I suggest you take down notes through writing and not through picture taking. Research shows that note taking improves focus and alertness.

You can click here to learn more about its benefits!

M – Make use of the time wisely.

We may not be good at recalling things but that does not mean we only have to review our notes an hour before the exam. It will still be beneficial for us to read the lessons every night. We may not be able to recall everything but at least, as we review the night or a day before the exam it will only be a refreshing of key notes and definitions.

A – Ask for help if you need it.

For people like me who finds it hard to remember concepts for an upcoming test, I think you too will find it easier when you are reviewing with your friends. You can discuss or exchange questions. We cannot perfectly take down notes during discussions or we do not have techniques to remember things. But since we have friends, don’t hesitate to reach out for help. Besides, it’s also an opportunity for you to know who your real friends are, because true friends will help you, no matter what the odds are!

R – Remember to eat before taking the exam.

I swear. This is one of the most important things to remember. I understand that we need  a lot of time to review for the exam since we are short-term memory learners. But if you will not spare time for eating, you will find it hard to focus if ever your tummy will ache during the exam. Instead of thinking about the answers, I bet you’ll end up thinking about McDonald’s hot fudge sundae with burger and fries. You wouldn’t risk your scores for being hungry, would you?

T – Take time to rest.

According to research, sleep deprivation affects our mental health. Therefore, if you do not take care of your sleeping hours, you are more likely to have problems with concentration and focus. You do not need to risk your health to achieve high scores on exam. Remember that you are important more than anything else. So, I repeat: Take time to rest.

To finally end, I wanted to leave a friendly reminder. We do not need to aim to be the best students. What we should be aiming for is to learn. And if ever you fail, it’s okay. As long as you do your best and learned from your mistakes, you are not a failure.

“Don’t beat yourself up. You don’t need to run so fast. Sometimes we come last but we did our best.”

Shakira, Try Everything

Paskuhan sa UP eLBi

Last November 19, 2019, various people visited UPLB’s Annual Christmas Lightning Ceremony with a title, Pasko Sa Elbi: Isang Pasasalamat.

The Campus’ entrance way features radiant and warm decorations such as the gigantic tree embedded with various christmas balls and ornaments, a lifesize Belen, and the bright and colorful pathway that highlights this year’s theme, Paskuhan sa Barrio.

This is a group output created with John Gherald Navera (UV-3L), Ray Anne Germia (UV-1L), Alexandra Gesmundo (UV-1L), Lawrence Neil Ebueña (UV-2L) and Daniel Mapanoo (UV-1L).

Tips from a distinguished alumna

“Hard work is a pre-requisite to success.”

Maria Veronica Quintana-Arioder, 2019

During the talk with the 2019 CDC Distinguished Alumna Awardees, Miss Maria Veronica Quintana-Arioder’s words really struck, not just me, but every single soul that was present that day in LR1. Her thesis adviser once told her that, “Life is tougher outside of the university.” And so, she shared some tips during her talk, and these are:

Learn to listen to others

“You have to collaborate with others to make progress. You have to listen to others before you speak.

Maria Veronica Quintana-Arioder, 2019

Don’t mind people with little minds

Be you. Don’t try to be someone you’re not. Don’t mind what others say and keep going.

Live your calling

Don’t be scared to take the road less travelled and live your calling!

“I put my heart and soul. That is what reading is all about.”

Maria Veronica Quintana-Arioder, 2019

“I chose the road less travelled.”

The One with the Science Bus

On November 11-15, the Department of Science and Technology-Science and Education Institute (DOST-SEI) had its educational bus called “nuLab” stopped over in UP Los Baños.

Students around the area were able to learn from various professionals about space science, mathematics, entomology, and science communication through interactive discussions and activities.

Get a glimpse on what the “nuLab” is like in the video.

The One with the STRASUC Player

Gloria Therese Eusebio (or Thea) from Batch 2019 is known among her peers as the epitome of “Beauty and Brains”, and after recently competing in the Southern Tagalog Regional Association of State Universities and Colleges (STRASUC) Olympics in Batangas City last November 6 and 7, where she won 2 silver and 1 bronze medals for the swimming event, she has proven that she is also a skilled athlete. In this video, Gloria will share her story on how she got into the sport, her experiences in competitions, her love and passion for swimming, and more.

Have a break, have a kitkat

“College is like looking both ways before you cross the street and then getting hit by an airplane.”

Yes, college is no joke. It’s either going to make you or break you. With all these, exams, papers, and quizzes happening in one go, it can really be mentally draining. Now the question is, how do we chill out?

ALWAYS HAVE TIME FOR YOURSELF

You shouldn’t drown yourself with work all the time. Never forget to spare some time to do the things that you love. Learn to focus on yourself sometimes, instead of focusing all your attention to your workload.

EAT YOUR HEART OUT

Stress eating? That’s pretty normal in college. Eat, eat and eat! If it comforts you to the point that you feel better, then never skip a meal. Also, snack all you want!

PRAY

Prayer is the food for the soul. Never forget the one who got you to where you are now, and the one who helped you cope up with your struggles. Talk to God and also listen to what he has to say.
