UP did really rubbed “bobo” in my face. No doubt. But no one said I’ll never learn. I learned a lot in my first semester. I’ve had my lessons. I’ve learned to live through deadlines, and I think it is something I should be proud of—something that could at least uplift myself.
After a semester, here’s an update of my self-rating in the 10 qualities of a media writer:
Many have improved but I cannot say that I am that intelligent. I know I need to improve more and widen my imagination to limits of what it should really be and not just stay at “puwede na”. I believe progress works on me and I’ll work my media writer qualities out.
And here are my updated self-rating on the five (5) skills as a media writer:
I definitely have to work on these skills. I may have improved but it is not enough. Lectures and laboratories are really a good way to enhance my skills but yes, I need more practice cause it’s what will bring these skills to an “uno”
I have more to improve and master. It is just the first semester and I have a lot of time to give to myself. Above all, what’s more important is I keep on going—-on pushing myself to limits so that at the end of the day, I have these learnings that will make me a good media writer.
What makes a topic development-oriented?
Development-oriented topics are the most needed texts if you are a Development Communicator since you are dealing with the marginalized people’s problems that needs to be addressed. Also, a Development Communicator should be the voice of the people that is in need.
Angel Cruz, Batch 2014’s Magna Cum Laude, shared what she thinks of a development-oriented topic:
Well, for me, development-oriented ang topic if it deals with the needs of the people and improving their lives. Whether it’s addressing lack of information, lack of services, or lack of infrastructure, as long as the topic concerns people, the topic is development-oriented.

Indeed, a topic that is development-oriented should be about the people. As Nora Quebral stated:
“We need to influence their ideas and thoughts. They can, like the end users of development projects, be as resistant to change and as traditional in their ways of thinking. The DevCom practitioners must also win over this group of people.”
(Quebral, 1975)
As a DevCom student we study different aspects of a person’s life, we study their society, we study how we can help them in order to solve the problem. We also make Problematique Map for us to know the root causes of underdevelopment of a society.

UP is not just a university for me – it is my home that I should fight for. STRASUC was a great experience for me because I did not just witnessed the beauty of Odiongan, Romblon, I was also given a chance to show how proud and honored I am to represent UP. To know more about my trip to Odiongan, Romblon with other UPLB delegates, visit my blog site. Be prepared to be amazed by the beauty of Odiongan and be proud of our fellow Isko/Iska.
College life can be stressful. Countless exams, difficult courses, non-stop requirements. These are the usual problems that a student faces. Factors of personal problems should also be noted. No matter who you are, you have at least one reason to be stressed out. Don’t worry, t’s normal. It’s just a matter of how you deal with it. Everybody has their own way of coping with stress. Here are my tips on how to chill
Every student has a responsibility to accomplish requirements. Some tasks are harder than the others. Things can get real stressful real fast. Personally, I take sanity breaks every time I feel like I need it. Above all, your mental health should be taken care of. Sanity breaks can last for five minutes to a few hours depending on how much time you think you need. Do what you want to do to take the edge off but make sure that you are working towards getting into a state of productivity. Take care of yourself and go back to work when you feel that your are ready.
Every now and then, you will have some free time on your hands. Find something that you enjoy doing like a hobby. Doing something that gives you a sense of enjoyment can and will make you happier in general. Happiness can lead to a state of relaxation. Remember, it is not a sin to have fun!
There are some people that find socialization tiring and tedious. Personally, I find it relaxing. Whether its meeting new people or hanging out with friends that you’re comfortable with, I love socializing. Being in a safe space with trusted people where you can be yourself is an effective way of relaxing.
Prevention is better than cure. You would have no immediate need to relax if in the first place, you do not have any reason to be stressed. It should be noted that there are factors that may not be in our control. It would be best not to dwell in it. For example, we cannot control the overwhelming requirements tasked to us during hell week season BUT we do have control about how we could handle said requirements. Prioritizing and managing all your resources properly is one way of reducing stress inducing factors thus directly helping you relax.
