Through a Kaleidoscope

Reminiscing back to my previous self-assessment, I was so sure that nothing would change over time. But after a semester of blood and sweat, I felt that I’ve improved as a media writer.

Back then, I was not really good at keeping up with my studies due to a lot of procrastination. But after one semester, I’ve felt that I can be more preserving than I thought. I’ve spent many days and nights trying to review for exams, which was so unlike me. Along my journey, I’ve also observed myself being able to overcome various difficulties, not only in my academic life but also in many social activities. I also saw at myself that I’ve become more service-oriented because others have taught me how to think less of myself.

Also, after a series of bombarding exercises in writing, I felt that I’ve become more knowledgeable in critical writing. There’s not a single night did I ever leave my laptop to finish homework. Through that, I’ve honed my skills in handling communication tools/devices.

I know that there will be more hardships and struggles along my journey as a Devcom student. But I hope that I can still improve myself over time and achieve my goals as a media writer.

Self-assessment at the beginning of the semester:

Self-assessment at the end of the semester:

Unfolding the improvements

It’s been 4 months since the semester started and now it’s finally over. Over the 4 months I’m in CDC, I can truly say that I’ve learned a lot, academically and even life learning. Academically speaking, I gained so much knowledge on what I entered and made me inspired and improved my skills more.

Based on my past self-ratings, I know in myself that I’m not really into reading but because of what I entered, which is as being a development-communicator-in-training, I should learn to be passionate about reading because I believe it is one of the foundations of being a development communicator. So, as I accomplished my 1st semester, little by little, I am practicing myself to  be more interested in reading any texts, not just because it is I need to but I have to for the betterment of my skills and also myself as an aspiring development communicator.

Through numerous interviews I had, may it be expert or MOS, I did it all on my own. Because back in high school, I am used to conduct interviews in group and not alone but now I had my courage to be independent in order to accomplish my task on my own. And for me that is a lot of improvement.

Also, through the numerous weekly writes and other writing activities, I was able to practice more myself on how to properly organize my information between paragraphs. As the saying goes, “practice makes you perfect”, I finally live with that line but I don’t believe in being perfect because I know that everyone of us has still room for improvement.

One semester is down but more to go and I’m looking forward for more academic learning and life lessons to be unfold as my journey as development-communicator-in-training continues.

Hi, Maf!

I know you’re thinking of “sana ginawa ko ‘to”, “sana pinaghusayan ko”, “sana pinag-aralan ko”, and ” sana maibabalik ko pa”. This semester will end soon and you have regrets. I can’t blame you. Studying here at UP wasn’t part of your plan and also the course that was given to you. You really don’t have any idea what the course is and the activities.
SMILE, girl. You did a great job and I hope that next semester you’ll do better. Please girl, don’t forget to do these tips. (Magsisisi ka na naman sa huli)

DO IT NOW.

If you have plenty of time, do it now please. Don’t use your phone or put it near you. You’ll end up browsing the internet, sharing and reacting on Facebook memes, watching Korean or Chinese dramas, and playing mobile games. If you have readings, please read it already. I know how much you hate reading a bunch in just a day or two.

LISTEN and FOCUS.

Girl, listen to your professors. Again, don’t use you phone inside the lecture hall. I know that you want to talk to your seatmates/friends and to tell stories or chikas, but you can share them after the lecture. I want you to listen and to focus so that it will be easy for you to review all your notes for your quizzes and exams. Do you still want to read a lot of PowerPoint presentations and still do not understand? Girl, do not repeat what you did in the ECON11 lecture (should I say, all lectures?) Ikaw rin lang ang mahihirapan.

WAKE UP EARLY.

Get up at 5:00 a.m. and not 6:30 a.m. because it takes you an hour or more to prepare. You have 7:00 a.m. class and you should be there at 6:50 a.m. Girl, don’t be late and be sure to eat your breakfast. Remember, huwag kang agaw-atensiyon tuwing umaga.

MANAGE YOUR TIME WISELY.

You should have time for yourself and for your acads. I can still remember that you almost forgot that it’s your special day and you have to celebrate it. Your friends from UPD and PUP were looking for you thay day but you didn’t go out with them because you still have to finish your requirements. You should give yourself time to rest and to enjoy. You know how to balance chemicals so you should also know how to balance your time.

ENJOY LIFE.

I know that you were struggling at first because you were alone in that college and your friend was at the College of Arts and Sciences. You didn’t know what to say to others or if it’s good to approach them first. You didn’t even want to wear shorts if you want to go out and to take a stroll. I want you to enjoy and to try new things. I want to see you smile even though you have a lot of problems in your mind. I know that you can do it. Girl, have fun too. You have your friends with you.
