At least now I know better

Looking back at my self-assessment in Week 2, I may have actually gave myself much higher scores than what I deserve. Not giving myself a rate lower than 3, I sure was optimistic. But after encountering every task the first semester had thrown me, I’m having second thoughts.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate everything that we’ve been tasked to do. It’s just that sometimes things were very hard for me. As I said before, I’m not that good a writer but of course, I’m trying. But we all know, sometimes trying isn’t good enough to excel.

I’d still rate myself the same in some skills and qualities because I think I’m pretty much the same. What I found to be really hard was gathering data. Sometimes life just wouldn’t give you the information that you want. The people who you’d want to schedule an interview with will sometimes not reply and there aren’t many events that are worth writing about. Or maybe I’m not that great to make my writing sound kinda okay.

The whole UP life, not just my devcom life, changed me and opened my eyes to the reality that I really need to grind my ass off if I want good results. This is just the beginning and there are more opportunities for me to do greater.

Throwback Thursday

Struggle is real, that’s how Engr.Romnick Pelagio de los Reyes describes his five years worth of college education here in University of the Philippines Los Baños. It was June 2012 when Engr. de los Reyes first set his feet in the university with the hope of becoming a civil engineer in the future. Five years later, finally, his dream became a reality.

During my talk with him, he shared me these three life lessons he acquired from UPLB. First is to build a support system. According to him, it is really important to have a set of genuine friends during your college life. They are the one’s who’ll help you along the way especially when the road goes bumpy. Second is to always remember your reason why you’re here in the university. In times of difficulties and hardships, these reasons encouraged and helped him to do better and keep on going. In these reasons, he found the strength and the hope to go on and continue what he had started. And lastly is to enjoy the college life amidst the pressure and demands of it. He told me that it is a once in a lifetime experience so might as well enjoy every bit of it.

Two years after his graduation, he is now rendering his service in an engineering firm somewhere in Manila. Truly, his struggles and hardships had paid off. Padayon, Engr. de los Reyes!

UPdates: ELBI Ignite – Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony | Weekly Writes

“Pasko, pasko, pasko na naman muli!“

It’s Christmas time everywhere, and it’s more evident in UPLB as the grand display in front of the campus is officially opened. This year’s Christmas tree lighting had the biggest audience in the history of the traditional ceremony.

Kaye Galler, Cedric Katigbak, Kristina Perez, and Karen Vargas, freshmen of the College of Development Communication, show the most awaited Christmas event in UPLB on the 2nd episode of UPdates.

Step-up

Before, I didn’t give myself a rating of 1 because of the fear of not being able to live up to that but that’s no longer the case. I’ve gotten more confident with my qualities and skills as a media writer because of a whole semester’s worth of learnings and training. Thus, most of the ratings I gave myself increased – A step-up from the earlier ratings. Although, there’s still so much room for improvement in the years to come.

Being exposed to the exercises required in the lab class of Devc 11 played a huge role in the development of such qualities. The very foundation of all the exercises, which was data gathering required perseverance, resourcefulness, and imagination to exhaust all the possible information that would make the writing process easier. The lectures and exercises in the course worked hand-in-hand to develop the qualities that gave me enough boost of confidence to rate myself an uno for almost all the qualities as shown in the photo.

After one semester of being a devcom student, it taught me the challenges of writing for the mass. There were many things that I had to unlearn to fit in in the writing style of the course.

The simpler, the better.

Know thy audience.

Establish your objectives.

Carrying the attitude, principles, and mindset I developed this semester as well as the teachings, I’m ready to face what’s to come.

16: When the Clock Struck 6 P.M: Christmas at UPLB

We are well aware of the festivities that took place on November 19: people gathered, the choir sang, dancers danced, and speeches were given. It was a fun time to be a resident or student, with orgs publicising themselves while the people entertained themselves by appreciating the well-done decorations.

Covering the event by the tree itself was an overdone approach. So, I ran around UPLB the moment the program started, seeing what I would find happening everywhere else. I was surprised, there actually was a lot happening at the same time.
