Los Baños, Laguna – Along the foothill of Mt. Makiling lies an edifice dedicated to St. Therese, the youngest doctor of the Catholic Church. Through the years, she has planted seeds of love and performed miracles inside this previously dubbed “Godless institution” by Dr. Paul B. Zafaralla. And before the saint, with his head bowed in reflection, is Zafaralla himself rewriting her history.
The Diocesan Shrine of St. Therese of the Child Jesus have stood as a fortress of the Catholic faith and served the pastoral needs of the University of the Philippines Los Baños for more than six decades. It wasn’t until recently that Fr. Luis A. Tolentino raised the idea of recording the church’s history through its very own coffee table book of which Dr. Zafaralla was given the task to write.
“We just became a shrine… and so, it was necessary that the story actually of this church be printed between covers starting with the first word in the 1920s….” Zafaralla said.
In line with the church’s call for elevation and in keeping with the demands of the parishioners and service, the coffee table book aims to inspire people and make them realize the importance of prayer.
Parts of the book include the experiences of some parishioners and the miracles they have witnessed through the intercession of St. Therese, their patron. “You’ll be surprised to find out that there were many miracles that defy even ordinary thinking.” Zafaralla exclaimed.
As of now, the book is expected to be finished and published by December this year. He explained that he rescheduled his dates with the press three times already because when parishioners learned about the book, they submitted their own inputs and finding out that they were very substantial, added them to his work.
Zafaralla clarified. “Kung ibebenta, it’s not to make money. It’s simply to maybe recall investments. Not a return of investments but simply to make even, but I don’t know the business side of it.” However he is sure that if it is to be sold, proceeds will be used to support the projects and programs of the diocese.
Zafaralla then urges parishioners to support other upcoming projects, programs and activities of the diocese. “Whatever these are, I’m sure that all these programs will taper to our love for the Lord Jesus Christ through the intercession of St. Therese and Virgin Mary” he said.
One semester is a very short period of time. However, I believe that in that short span I have made significant improvements regarding my qualities and skills as a media writer.
Self-assessment at the beginning of the semester:
Self-assessment at the end of the semester:
I know I still have a long way to go and I’m very willing to learn more and strive harder next semesters. Someday, I will be able to maximize my skills to my fullest potential and I will be the media writer I aspire to be.
Before, I only write to voice out my feelings that I cannot speak out. I write down everything to express the emotions kept for a long time. However, I have learned that more than that, writing serves a greater purpose. It is an avenue to connect with the people and hear them. This class taught me that here in Devcom, aside from having countless opportunities, we are essential to the development in the community by practicing participatory communication within the community and among the locals.
However, it does not end with the idea of serving the people. It requires both the mind and the heart that are willing to serve. It needs the mind that opens for communication that can think of the most appropriate and best solution regarding the community’s issue. While, there is still the compassionate heart that touches the lives of the marginalized.
So, WHAT MAKES me a GOOD WRITER?
I have no proper training in writing, in whatever kinds and types of writing. I am more fond of reading; I have enjoyed reading stories of success, criminal cases, investigative documentaries, and such. But when it comes to writing, I could still say that I have so much to learn. I need to learn more. And through this class, I have gained a lot of knowledge and information from the successful individuals who chose Devcom as their molders.
At the end of this semester, I have realized that I am more
Curious about discovering things I am unfamiliar with; I want to know them firsthand and be more adventurous and riskier in a sense that these would lead me to more learning and experiences.
Intelligent, in a way that I am more critical with the information that the media is serving me. I have learned the importance of ‘fact checking’ and the triangular check to distinguish the credible source and the accurate information that different platforms produced.
Industrious and Resourceful, since a media writer has to cover a particular event that we experienced most of the time. There is always a deadline that must be met regardless of the availability of the persons involved and the event that you want to feature.
Persevere, to stand after the series of rejections, discouragement and disappointments, mostly within my own self. There has to be perseverance to continue the journey despite the challenges and difficulties that this life has giving.
Imaginative that basically was shown on the Devc 11 exercises which asked us all to be more creative when producing materials for media writing.
Prioritizing the accuracy and truth for I have learned that as media writers, we should not be seen only as skilled professionals but also as ethical in the type of journalism that we serve the public. I have memorized one from the Journalists’ Code of Ethics, that I shall not commit any act of plagiarism. I shall sustain the accuracy of every article that I will publish.
Fond of Reading since it is indeed helpful to learn more about the writing practices, sentence construction, and many more that would help me improve my skills.
Interested in and loves people because Devc 10 taught me that this program is for the people, especially to the marginalized. I was inspired to know more about the people and how I could help them through this degree program as I proceed to higher Devcom courses.
Service-oriented, right now that it is clearer to me the essence of being part of this community. This college has taught me a lot about viewing other people’s lives, as well as understanding their situation in a deeper sense, and using communication for a greater purpose of reaching development.
On the other hand, for the following skills required for a media writer:
Gathering data – 2
Validating and clarifying information – 2
Organizing information – 2
Writing clearly and effectively – 2
Proficiency in the operation of communication tools/devices -2
It is not bad, but rather a good start to end this semester and be prepared for more semesters coming. It indicates the need for learning to be more suitable to be part of this community.

The lighting of the university’s giant Christmas tree and other Christmas decorations tells us that it’s already Christmas in UPLB!
The theme of this year’s installation is Paskuhan sa Barrio, featuring a life-sized Belen and a mini park with fountain. The lighting ceremony was held on the evening of November 19 with a program entitled Pasko sa Elbi: Isang Pasasalamat. It was attended by Chancellor Sanchez, university vice chancellors, faculty members, staffs, students and Los Baños residents. Part of the event were performances from UPLB Choral Ensemble, Dr. Antonio Jesus, UPLB Street Jazz Dance Company, and the UPLB Filipiniana Dance Troupe. Also, a mini bazaar was opened at the parking lot of the University Housing Office.
Setting up these ornaments at the UPLB main gate started thirteen years ago in 2006. This marks the beginning of holiday season and the coming end of the First Semester.
Here is a video prepared by Group Binhi showcasing the highlights of UPLB’s annual treat for the community.
Note to my *slightly* younger self.
Hey,
Do you remember the first time you realized you wanted to go UP? Yes, that day. You were sitting on your living room couch with your mom and out of nowhere you spoke loudly, “Ma, gusto ko pumasok ‘don” while gesturing to what it seems to be a news report that featured the university.
Do you remember your first role model? Ah yes, Shamcey Supsup. Architecture Licensure Exam Topnotcher and Miss Universe 2011 3rd runner up.
Do you remember the first time you sat at your desk chair and attempted to review for your College Entrance Exams? That day, yes. I’m sure you remember being overwhelmed and freaking out because you think you’re running out of time.
And do you remember? Do you remember the first time you knew you passed the UPCAT? You unconsciously entered a fancy restaurant and said yes to everything the cashier offered you. Ah, too much many wasted there, my friend.
Do you still remember? All of them?
I hope you do, because all of those represent your yearning to achieve your dreams.
You’ve already gone far, I mean not too far, but you’re not the dumb, clueless kid that you used to be before.
You have improved, you’ve become better, and I’m so proud of you. I’m sure a lot of other people are too.
Now, what I want you to do is appreciate and give credit to yourself for all the things you have done. You may have failed a couple of times, embarrassed yourself more than the fingers in both your hands. But you’re still standing there like nothing happened, and sometimes your resilience is more than enough.
Yes, college is tough. But you know what’s tougher? You. You’ve overcome too much difficulty at this point and there’s no reason to quit now. It’s okay to be weak, but don’t make it too often, okay?
Cancel all that false positivity. Nothing’s ever going to get better. You know that. But you, you can get better.
Stop the self-deprecation, my friend. It’s not cute, nor is it quirky. It’s not good for you and will only contribute to your self-decay.
And remember, even if it’s hard to believe, not everyone hates you.
You’re doing nice, you should keep going.
Without wax,
Ezy
