The College of Development Communication, just like any other colleges, conducts its Sports Festival presenting CDCklaban 2019. The students, faculties, and other staff participated in the two-day event on November 9 and 16. It was held to welcome the students and engage them with the CDC community.

The day you’ve been anticipating finally came. You’re now a UP student. A dream come true for someone who grew up surrounded by UP graduates you call “ate” and “kuya”. Now, I know the fear you feel within your heart can be overwhelming since you’re starting a new chapter in your life with a new environment, and a variety of new faces but know that everything will be alright as long as you keep these five pieces of advice in mind.
Enjoy your first 3 weeks at UPLB
Those three weeks are filled with freshman activities. I encourage you to attend them as much as you can because you’ll meet people who will help you during your adjustment period and even beyond that. Also, those three weeks are probably the most chill weeks in your whole first semester as a freshman at UPLB so relax and enjoy as much as you can.
Make friends
College is a lot bearable when you’re surrounded by people who will help you, who will eat with you, who will make you happy, and who will make you feel like you’re not alone and of course vice versa. Those people will add color to your college life.
For the whole semester, there are several articles, essays, and the likes that you will be required to read so it’s better to be on board on the bookworm train to make your reading experience less painful. Plus, it’ll improve your writing, which you will be doing a lot in the course, so it’s a win-win.
Establish a routine
Procrastination is hard to beat so we tend to cram everything a day, a few hours or even an hour before the deadline so as early as now, form a routine in doing your papers. The moment an output is given no matter how far the deadline is, do it as early as you can. Once you’ve gotten used to doing so, it will be easier to do acads without giving it much thought.
Attend as many incentivized activities as you can
You get to expose yourself from different kinds of activities and at the same time get extra points for a certain course is a win-win so take advantage of those. Don’t let yourself be carried away by laziness because activities like such can help you in the long run.
Sincerely yours,
19-year-old Janille whose almost done with the semester
Development-communicators-in-training are not just excelling in academics, but they surely can dominate the field of sports as well.

Looking back to me and my old self before I entered UP, I am pretty much aware that my journey as a freshman this first semester has been a taciturn of events. Its very nostalgic how time flies so fast and here I am sitted in a couch reminiscing everything. To be honest this had been the toughest 5 months of my life that left me mind wrecked but also gave me a lot of lessons.
So if ever I am going to give my old self advice it will be:
Accept Failures. I am not perfect, and It happens to make me more humane. A failed test do not mean a failure in life but a lesson to do better next time.
Always keep your head above water. Even though college works may be drowning we must always be composed and manage our time wisely
Enjoy the little things. May it be a good quiz score up to a nice meal and a complete 8 hour sleep we should always value things that gives us smiles on our faces.
Spend time with your blockmates. They are your second family and colleagues and besides you may not be with them the next semester you will miss them for sure so don’t miss out!
Pray. Above anything else we should always remember to pray more. Academic is a priority but faith should always be intack.
All of these are just tips that I think I should have given my self notice and practiced more nevertheless my first semester has been a veri difficult mountain hike. What’s important is we should always start strong and finish strong.
At the end of the day we should always make ourselves proud!
“Reality changes; in order to represent it, modes of representation must change.”– Bertolt Brecht
I felt ecstatic during the first few weeks. Knowing that entering UP is a dream come true, make it seems so surreal. It’s just too good to be true. Nonetheless, the excitement lasted so soon, I felt nervous, anxious, became oblivious and hesitant that made me lose my track. However, just like what the quotation above says, this is now my reality and to be able to keep up with this reality, there will be a change, and I should ready myself with these transitions to move smoothly forward.
Looking back to my very first semester (and hoping not to be the last) I see lots of things I can change for the better. But let me highlight the top 5 most useful pieces of advice I can share.
1. OPTIMISM IS THE KEY
The moment I land my feet at UPLB, I always ask myself, am I good enough for this university? Do I have what it takes to be one of the well-known Iskolar ng Bayan? Will I fail? Should I pursue it? Lots of questions but hey! Take a deep breath and listen; YOU DESERVE THIS. You worked hard for it and you earned it, so you are deserving of this chance. I don’t want you to go in your first semester like me that has so many doubts, buts, and what-ifs which greatly affects my perception of things. The worst-case scenario is that you lose your self-confidence. To be able to receive good results, one must have a positive mindset. This will boost you up to be eager in studying and discovering new ideas unfamiliar to you.
2. BUILD CONNECTION
Being too shy to approach, I couldn’t make a lot of friends. It was very hard to cope with the changing environment when you know very little about those who surround you. I am not saying that you make it your goal to befriend every one of them, I am just saying that maybe a little smile, a short hi and a wave of a hand will greatly help you to be familiar and comfortable around them. Through this, you’ll feel company, you’ll have a feeling of belongingness that will motivate you to keep pursuing the course, to have someone to go to when you have questions and colleagues that might someday be your friend to conquer and overcome the semester with. Good thing as I start my semester, UPLB gave me a bunch of amazing peeps, my block CD2, to laugh, cram and do things together.
3. ALWAYS TARGET EXCELLENCE
Full of hesitations I started the semester wrong by believing that it’s okay to settle for the least when it is not. Always remember to open your college life with a positive outlook with lots of opportunities and triumphs. Whenever there are things that you needed to accomplish always see to it that you do your 100% so you won’t regret the result afterward. When it comes to your exams always aim for the highest, set your standards high enough so if the results didn’t go exactly the way you wanted it to be, and more likely a little lower than that you can still smile and say that a little room for improvement is not bad, you just need to work harder the next time. Do not be sad and give yourself a tap in the back with the realization that you worked hard for it and that there’s always a next time to do better.
4. RELAX
Do not think too much, keep calm, relax and focus your attention on things approaching ahead of you. I should have advised myself before to do this. I should have not become so worried about everything if I learned how to be calm and to relax. Nevertheless, being too worried about requirements, tasks, and examinations coming doesn’t bring me a hundred percent disaster because it alarmed me in a good way to finish everything, to use my time efficiently and to organize my schedule so I can make sure everything is taken care of and that I left nothing behind. It somehow helped me to accomplish everything. But I believe it could have been less stressful if I manage to do it calmly.
5. KNOW THAT YOU ARE NOT ALONE
Always keep in mind that you are not unaccompanied in your journey. You just need to look around you to see that there are lots of persons willing to walk the path with you and each one of them has stories to share, has values and life principles you can learn to. You just need sometimes to believe in them and show yourself, bits of it. And when you can assure that they are genuine and true to you let them guide you, and always show them as well of the right things. It is a two-way process you know; you give and take. And finally, overcome the semester together with a dream of a young UP aspirant wearing the sought-after sablay walking down the aisle after 4 years with a diploma in hand.
Indeed, college is not easy, but it will always be upon your decisions and ways on how you’ll make the best out of it. Just like one of my favorite teachers used to tell me back then: DUC IN ALTUM; draw into the deep. Sail to the deep and go into the horizon, find yourself and seek the purpose that will bring you excellence. Do your best and never falter, there’s a long way ahead and the journey is just about to start.
Being here is one great achievement already. So, keep sailing my friend and I wish you nothing but excellence as you travel your way Isko and Iska.
“The answers are out there in the drowning deep. Sail your sea, meet your storms.”
This semester is almost over and I am thankful that I have gained a lot of knowledge through the experiences I have undertaken. However there are still points for improvement.
I am still in awe of the fact that I have survived a semester in the country’s top university. One semester feels like a year for it really literally and figuratively drained my energy yet it is quite a memorable experience. If only I have been more prepared about foreseeing the things that will happen, I might have been more focused.
Here is my letter to my old self as a first time university student:
“Hey there! I know exactly that you are scared of going out and venturing into a whole new environment. I also know that you have anxieties and you are pressured to maintain the academic standings you have once established but dear I want you to know that in college you have your own pace and time. It is not about who finishes first, it is about self discovery and to which you can improve yourself thereafter. I want you to know this 5 tips in order to survive the semester: study harder because everyone else is smarter than you; avoid procrastination as much as possible to stop prolonging your agony and to have time for revisions; give the best in everything so that you may never regret about its results; surround yourself with positivity for a negative mind will never give you a positive life, and lastly; love yourself by rewarding yourself for the efforts you have done. Remember you did your best, thus, it is enough.I love you and you will do great!
College life is really a big ocean, either I will drown and sink at the bottom or help myself by swimming. I know that this is only the beginning of the fulfillment of my dreams so I have to keep on moving forward. This will be an open chapter of the book I am making for it is not yet done. May this serve as a lesson and inspiration for me to do better in the coming semester. Likewise, I would like to encourage you all to also refuse to be just an audience to your own life rather be the scriptwriter of your own existence.
How do I even begin writing this? It’s been a long ride and I’m actually surprised that I managed to come this far. After a lot of complaining and a lot of tweeting “auq na” and a lot of crying and a lot of mental breakdowns, finally we’re nearing the end of sem. There’s a lot of tips I’d like to give my old self and hopefully I follow all the advice that I’d write here for the next semester.
Tip #1: For the love of all the gods, stop procrastinating. I don’t even know how to actually stop this habit because old habits die hard but please know when to stop chilling and get on your paper! I guessed the reason why I still cram is because I still manage to pass my requirements but of course, it’s still a bad habit and it causes a lot of stress. I’ve always told myself that I work better under pressure but that’s a load of shit, I do not work better under pressure, in fact I actually get so overwhelmed that I just write for the sake of having something to pass. Okay lang kahit di maayos, basta may gawa. And that needs to stop because you’re a college student now, this is not high school. It’s important that you do your best and actually strive hard.
Tip #2: Stop staying up late when you know full well that you can’t wake up early. Please remember that being late is a sign of disrespect and laziness. And while it’s true that you’re lazy, keep in mind that, again, college ka na. It’s time to part ways with the habit of being late all the time.
Tip #3: Manage your time wisely. Doing assignments is more important than scrolling through your Twitter feed. If you don’t manage your time, you’d end up being buried in a lot of school work. Then, you’ll get so stressed that you can’t even find the will to start. Set your priorities straight, you can still browse through social media later, but your assignments needs your attention now.
Tip #4: Don’t be too hard on yourself. Hindi ka bobo, you’re intelligent but uninformed. CHAROT JHSFHDS but really, just because you don’t know something doesn’t mean your dumb. It just means that you have to study more. And don’t compare yourself to others, your race is not theirs.
Tip #5: In times where you feel like giving up, remember that there are always people that are cheering for you. Always thank everyone that were with you in trying times. You are not alone.
College life has been very tiring and it drained the hell out of me. I know that there were times that I didn’t do my best but I know better now.
It’s already four months since my first day in college. The beginning was light yet alienating, the process—the exams, quizzes, and lectures themselves are tiring, but I am almost at the end of my first lap in college.
I entered this university with lessons from the outside which helped me in some ways but are still not enough. This environment is different from where I came from. College is different. And now, I have lessons from first hand experiences that could save me from my upcoming semesters.
If I’ll advise myself to make my first semester at least a little difficult, it would be these:
REREAD LESSONS OF A WEEK THAT HAVE PASSED.
Give yourself at least two hours to review. This would help in your hell week. In days where you don’t have deadlines to meet, do not take all of your time playing and watching movies. Again, give yourself time to read.
BE ORGANIZED.
YOU ARE NOT THIS. DON’T MAKE IT HARD FOR YOURSELF.
You are a conscious person especially with your things, but you are a messy person too. Do not consume your time cleaning and organizing things when you can just not do it in the first place (because there’s no cleaning/organizing needed) .
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CRAM A HUNDRED-PAGE READINGS.
WE HAVE THIS THING CALLED “DAYS”, NOT JUST “A DAY”
Believe me, you cannot do it. There are things you can cram but not those kinds of readings. Be responsible and use your time wisely. You can divide tasks and have proper time management even in your most busy days.
DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED.
YOU FAIL. YOU PASS. DON’T LET IT CONSUME YOU.
You might get failing scores on quizzes but do not let that get to you. Be sad if you have to, but move on. Do not overthink and let low scores affect another business. You can always get back. Just study and focus on the things you can change.
OBEY.
You know you’ve been doing the wrong things. You know procrastinating won’t get you anywhere. You know cramming is a gamble. You know you must not be too addicted to social media, binge-watching, and playing games. You know these things, but you always choose to do so. You are listening but you are not obeying. If you want to make your life a little less vulnerable, obey.
No matter how ready you are, you won’t just be ready enough. But at least, take some boosters to help you get through the semester alive again.
You are not the only one getting through all these challenges.
They said, college is meant for you to fight alone, but no one says you can’t be with your friends while fighting your own battle. So get the best out of it!
You will eventually meet new friends along the way also. Open your door and bring in the good ones.
Just keep on going! Study well and enjoy everything even when you’re on the verge of crying.
