“Development Communication? Ano ‘yun?” #exploringdevcom

If you’re a DevCom student, you would know how hard it is to explain to your relatives and friends what you are studying about or what you will do after you graduate.

“Development Communication? Ano ‘yun?” is the most common question we encounter as a Devcom students. The usual answer we Devcom major would give is “it’s similar to mass communication and communication arts, but is focused on the marginalized sector,” it’s more than that, but it’s the easiest answer to understand.

For me, Devcom is looking at your community in a different angle, beyond the norm, beyond things that have been going on, things that no one seems to notice and do anything about.

There are still a lot of questions about Devcom and we made a video about it!

Let’s watch the Episode 2 of the Devcom Explorers as they feature the top 3 most common questions about Devcom from family members, neighbors, high school batchmates, and friends.

Water Break

We’ve reached that part of the semester where the weather is cooler and faces are more anxious than ever. Its the last leg of our first semester journey.

During this time, students are usually stressed beyond belief. It’s crucial that during this time students are able to balance their time and not over stress over the small things. Here are 3 tips to help you chill during the hell week.

DECLUTTER.

Its important to have our things in order, especially during the hell week. Making sure that our schedules and things are in order will help us stress less in the long run. It is also important to declutter the things we don’t need our lives such as unnecessary stress from expectations and external commitments we can let go. Overall during this time focusing on the things that matter will boost your likeliness to chill better.

SOCIALIZE.

We sometimes fall into a bad habit of isolating ourselves whenever we encounter problems in our lives. This could be a negative habit because we tend to bottle the anxiety and stress we feel. During times like these, especially during hell weeks I think its important to take time to hangout with friends or even study together to minimize the stress levels.

BREATHE.

Finally, take a deep breath and move forward. Getting a low grade or not meeting your expectation won’t be the end of your world. Realize that failure is only part of the journey of success. At the end of the day we all have our own pace and timing.

Week 14. Devcom and sports

Covering sports topics is this week’s challenge for our development communicators-in-training. In groups, the students will develop online content on the CDCiklaban sports fest (Nov 9 and 16 ) OR profiles of STRASSUC player/participants from devcom. Working in groups, the outputs this week will be packaged into audiovisual materials for posting in the UPLB Devcom Facebook Page. (Deadline: November 29)

DEVCOM? Ah COMM Course.

It was unfortunate of me that I do not know Devcom when I signed up for UPCAT. So I put science courses when filling up programs in LB campus. But as I wander around the university in my first year last year, I realized that I am for DevCom. Now, I am slowly building my understanding to what Development Communication is all about. For whom is it, and what is it.

The DEVCOM EXPLORERS interviewed few Devcom students and practioners to know what is Development Communication for them.
