+ A friendly advice from the fresh Iskolars ng Bayan.
It was that time of the year again when students must deal with a bunch of reflection papers, group reporting, quizzes and long examinations. Taking a break is okay, especially if everything already feels heavy. Here are five things that I do to de-stress and unwind:
Eat your comfort food.
Having a full stomach will surely give you energy to finish everything in your to-do list. Satisfy your cravings with food that you are thinking about for the past days. You may also eat out with your friends at your favorite food places.
Watch television series.
Cross out one of the series in your must-watch list. It is good to laugh and feel that ‘kilig’ while watching. However, do not stay up too late to finish the episodes.
Talk to your loved ones.
Sharing your thoughts and feelings to someone is effective to at least lessen the stress that you are feeling. It also feels good to talk with your mom even just on the phone for a minute or two. Also remember that your friends are there to cheer you up.
Sweat off.
Dancing is my favorite hobby, and every time I feel that my day is off, I dance. I just stand in front of the mirror, listen to upbeat music, and feel the vibe. You may also sweat off through walking or running around the park.
SLEEP IS ALL YOU NEED.
Well, for me, sleep is not for the weak. If I feel that everything is not falling into place, I sleep to recharge and forget the feeling of uneasiness at least even for a while. When you wake, just pat yourself on the back and say “Let’s get back to work!”
College and chilling.
These two words don’t really go together from a student’s perspective. Heavy workload requires a lot of time, especially during hell week where students are bombarded by exams, exercises, and deadlines, that one can’t really find the time to chill. A lot of people, including me, actually consider chilling a sin because of the reason that they could’ve studied instead of taking a rest. A lot of times students feel guilty for sleeping or even taking a nap because they could’ve used that time for schoolwork. However, continuous exertion of energy for school will inevitably drain our strengths and take its toll on our health. No matter how time-consuming requirements can be, college students should always include resting in their jam-packed schedules.
How does a DevCom student de-stress? Here are some things that I do:
Eat. Eating is one of the simplest forms of pleasure a college student can do to de-stress. However, we should take caution on the food that we eat. Most students turn to sweets when stressed but eating sweets is all fun and games until you get a migraine. High sugar levels can cause severe headaches and we can’t afford to get sick because we have a lot to do. So, eat healthy. I suggest eating fruits as an alternative but it can be expensive.
Move. Us, DevCom students, are often glued to our seats because we do a lot of writing so it’s important that we stretch our muscles from time to time. Take a walk around the campus and observe its serenity outside classes because you surely won’t feel at peace inside the classrooms of the university. You can also jog around Freedom Park, this way you can exercise and de-stress. Another thing that I do is zumba. It’s a good thing that our HK 12 requires us to attend the zumba at Baker Hall but everyone is free to join. It doesn’t matter whether you’re good at dancing or not, what’s important is you move your body and feel the music. After an hour of zumba, you will certainly feel your body loosen up and it also helps you sleep soundly. Exercising can really help you release all the stress that hell week can bring.
Read. Not the required readings though. Take a rest from the readings and start reading that book that you told yourself you were definitely going to finish but never went back to. Yes, that book. Read that.
Sleep! And I say it again, sleep. For the love of the gods, sleep. No, you don’t need to scroll down a little more on Twitter or Instagram leading you to accidentally stay up until 1AM. Sleep is very important. Value it. Cherish it while you still can because you’d be lacking sleep once you pull an all-nighter to study for the exams and I assure you, you will regret that you did not take those sweet moments of free time to close your eyes and take a nap.
We all have different ways to unwind and hopefully I was able to give you some ideas to release the negative vibes that you gathered from all the stress the university gives us. There are times when you need to take a break from the hustle and slow down.
Midterms -a nightmare come to life. An inevitability hat every student would face. More than signifying that exams and deadlines are fast approaching, it also means that time is running short for every student who wishes to come back from setbacks like low exams. And this is why these hacks are prepared and thought of, to help and remind us to chill and de-stress every once in a while, especially a very stressful week A.K.A. self-care!
Find your motivation.
Even before the hell week, it was important to get ready and get your defenses strong so that you could face all the headaches coming your way. That’s why you need to find something that motivates you. May it be seeing your family, your dogs, your friends, a reminder of your dreams. Take and digest it. Even meditate so that you could internalize it. This is to make sure that whatever happens during the wave of the midterms, your head will stay afloat and that you will keep on going on despite of how hard it is.
Taking a walk.
Reviewing for an exam can take a lot of energy out of us. It can literally drain us -physically, mentally and emotionally. It can also be suffocating at times to be in a confined space for a long time just thinking and trying to digest all the information from your lessons. Walking even just outside your dorm, taking a breath after hours of studying can help it a lot. It will help remove even just a bit of exhaustion and oil your mind for more studying lessons after.
Giving yourself a reward.
Being drained out of energy is not a very good feeling. And midterms bring out exactly THAT feeling. That is why it is important to bring that energy back after a heavy week. Eating your comfort food, binge watching your favorite series, sleeping for 10 hours or simply going out with your friends are good ways to reward yourself for all your hard work.
Being in the premier state university in the country, dealing things here are not as easy as you think. Professors are indeed shaping the students minds are capabilities to their maximum potentials, which at some point, stresses the students out because of the sky high standards they set for their classes. With these as an inevitable situation for all of the students in the university, there are still a number of students who are not adjusting well or coping up on the dynamics of their studies, and they are indeed in that state of mind that are fuzzed out of negative emotions because they don’t have effective ways to unwind themselves. But in this article, I will present to you my five ways on how to divert yourself from the stressful life in the university.
1. Sleep or Nap.
Majority of the students in the university tend to cram a lot of things at night, from activities and assignments to reviewing for an upcoming exam, thus sacrificing one of the most precious things that we must treasure in our college life – sleep. We should not normalize this kind of habit due to the fact that sometimes, it just intensifies the stress and our works for the other day will be downgraded. When you are stressed out or tired but you need to work on your academics, just take a short nap and this will somehow help you de-stress a bit.
On weekends, recover your tired body by maximizing your sleep. Your bed will serve as a charger to amp up your energy. This will give you a nice jump start to your week ahead.
2. Watch your favorite TV shows, films.
Entertain yourself on your free time by watching your favorite TV show or film. For me, this is one of the most effective methods to de-stress because it will serve as an escape on all the fuzziness encircling your mind. You want to feel that love again? Watch K-Dramas or Romantic Comedy movies! Or do you want to experience that thrill on your heart? Watch adventure or horror types of shows. In that way, you are becoming a human again, because of the emotions that you experience that you get from watching these types of art.
3. Stroll around Elbi.
This is one of the most therapeutic things that I am doing on my free time. I just wander around the campus and enjoy the scenery that Elbi has to offer. Just take a brisk walk around the campus, unwind on the parks and tourist spots, and observe how these diverse nature of people act, and you will see how it is very soothing not only for the eyes, but also for the mind because it gives you a sense of peace and clarity. This will not only gives you a healthy mind, but also a healthy heart.
4. Bond with your super classmates.
Who can understand and relate on all of your academic struggles better than your super classmates? Bonding with them on your free time by sharing all of your negative thoughts or just sharing the latest ‘chikas’ are indeed one of the best ways to divert yourself from the stress that you are experiencing from your academics. They will also serve as your support groups whenever you need some help on your studies but also in your problems.
5. Go back to your hometowns and spend time to the people you love.
If you have the capacity to go back to your hometown on the weekends and you don’t have any academic responsibilities that needs to be done on the campus, then go back. This is, indeed, the most effective way for me to de-stress myself to all the negativity and heavy thoughts.
Going back to the closest people that I love, whether they are my family members or my closest friends, and spending quality time with them is one of the best things I can get because in that way, they will motivate me to still go on despite of the hardships that I experience in my university life. Seeing them gives that strength that I need to stay strong because all of the things that I am doing in UP are dedicated to them.
It is indeed that we are in the stressful eras in our life, but as we, human beings, are created to adapt in certain situations. I hope that you should also consider these tips because these, indeed, worked for me on how I unwind myself in the stressing university life.
Padayon Isko’t Iska! Laban lang!
We’re almost there, a few little steps more and we’re finally getting the bread! They say hard work pays off. All those sleepless nights, countless cups of coffee you’ve consumed and the extra layers of dark circles under your eyes will all be worth it. College life is really testing our patience, emotional strength, mental stability and even our physical health. With that, it’s not bad to take in a breath of fresh air and exhale all the stress and negativities. Reward yourself from time to time and have a break from the exhausting environment.
Here are five of my effective distressing mechanisms that you could also try:
This is one of my best coping mechanisms whenever I’m feeling stressed and demotivated. It may seem like it’s already a given resort because we already spend time with our friends at most times. However, the feeling of being around with people who genuinely cares and brings positivity in you is life-changing. One of the best feelings in the world is knowing that there are people who are willing to listen and validate every single emotion you have.
It really is the best escape from reality. Relax and let your mind rest for a while. Always keep in mind that having enough time of sleep or even taking naps are already a huge help in relieving your worrying heart and mind. After a long day, make sure you give yourself enough time to close your eyes and escape the tiring reality even just for a while.
As a person who really loves music, this is an effective way to shake the stress away. Listening to my favorite songs, singing along, and even swaying with the rhythm eases the exhaustion from a long tiring week of quizzes, discussions, and exams. It is true that through music, you could express and be able to relate to the art of its harmonies and lyrics. Just sing it all out and let your mind and soul rest and calm down with the beat.
This is my favorite coping mechanism among all the others. Eat the stress out, sis! Reward yourself from time to time. You survived a surprise quiz? Get and grab delicious treats. After consecutive sleepless nights because of exams? No one’s stopping you from eating in your go-to restaurant. A hardworking college students deserves nothing but a delicious meal that would definitely satisfy their drained minds and hungry stomachs.
Give yourself enough time to think and reflect about what’s happening around you or even within you. It’s important to have a healthy relationship with yourself as you try to look back and find more motivation to keep going in every battle you’re about to face in the university. Being alone doesn’t automatically equate to feeling lonely. It is the time to let that brave soul rest for a while, thus, tomorrow’s another battle to surpass.
There will always be the calm before the storm. It is important to be mentally and emotionally prepared. Prioritizing your well-being will make it easier for you to face the future battles. Laban lang kapwa isko/iska!
