Create. Hibernate. Indulge. Laugh. Long walks.

Oh, UPLB. Look what you’ve made me do *laughs and cries simultaneously*

It’s midterms season now, and it seemed like UPLB has now turned to a zombies den full of caffeinated students trying to hang on and survive during the busiest time of their life. So, do they even have time to rest and chill? Well, of course, they do—we do.

Here are some of the little things I do when I need to chill:

  1. Create.   This is a very unusual thing to destress or unwind, I guess, but this really helps me a lot. Lately, I’ve been into digital art and it really makes me happy. Whenever I feel stressed or unfocused, I close all the tabs on my laptop and just proceed to create art.
  1. Hibernate.  Every college student knows how important naps are. We may have neglected it from the past, but now, we would do everything just to get some—8, 7, 6 or even 5 hours of sleep.
  1. Indulge.  Donuts? Milk Tea? Spaghetti? Burrito? Give it to me. I guess I’m not alone on this one. Every one of us, when stressed, indulge all the good food that we could afford. So, buy that burger, fries, or sundae! You deserve it.
  1. Laugh.  Sometimes, when sleeping and eating doesn’t work, all I do is meet up with my friends (who are also free, by the way) just to catch up. Of course, laughing, hugging and crying will always be there. It’s also nice to have some time with your friends, away from all your academic responsibilities.
  1. Long walks.  If only Freedom Park could talk, he would have talked to me every single time I was there. Sometimes, being alone isn’t bad. We all need some time with ourselves, reflecting with whatever we’re going through. Try taking some long walks and 20 minutes later, you’re all good. You’re now ready to take the challenge again.

So, to you, who are experiencing the same thing right now, all the stress and anxiety that *coughs* the university is giving you, let me give you a virtual hug and a pat on the back. You can do this. Everything will be alright. Let’s go, Isko and Iska! Padayon.

Chill Day

Life has tied us to the idea of productivity, accomplishment, and competency. Over time, our negligence towards our health pays us off with unwanted exhaustion and enervating will to live. We enslave our bodies to the fullest extent, and in return, we become slaves of stress and anxiety.

Over the years, I have acquired a deeper understanding of how one can attain endearing productivity without sacrificing its well-being. It’s in little things that we find joy; it is in appreciation that we bring off a sigh of relief against pressure and expectation; it is in the food that we treat ourselves that provides us the satisfaction of rewards. The long walks of adventitious thoughts, the energy to create memories with your special friends, and the twinge of happiness are some of the things that remind us of the feeling of being alive.

Let’s not take the chance away from ourselves to feel the warmth of comfort. Let’s not get tied up with only what we are blinded to do so. We may never have the gift of time to do all the things we desire to accomplish, but let us make time to unwind and feel alive in the limit of our existence.

Bye-bye stress

College life is definitely a stressful life. With dozens of exams and papers here and there, you can hardly find time to unwind and relax. However, while we deal with the pressure and stress brought to us by acads,  we must always remind ourselves to take a break and not overwork ourselves. There are different ways on how a person can chill or at least distract themselves from the stress by college life. Here are the things I usually do which I definitely recommend.

Fix the mess that is your closet

Or your study table, your room, your dorm or house, or anything that is disorganized in your place. Release your inner Marie Kondo and spark joy by organizing the mess around you. For me, this is a good way to de-stress and distract myself from all the problems I have in college. It also gives me this sense of accomplishment once I’ve finished organizing my stuff. Plus, it’s better to work in an organized area than in a messy one.

Social Media Detox

Social media can be fun as we get to interact with our favorite people and see hilarious photos and videos. However, there are times when it can become too toxic for us. So, close all the social media tabs (or hide your phone) and take a break from all the fake news, toxic commenters, and problematic posts.

Skin Care is Self Care

While it is impossible to attain clear skin in college (unless you are hashtag blessed), it is still nice to put on a face mask and relax every once in a while. Or even just by washing your face properly, you can feel at ease when you feel like your skin is clean and moisturized. Clear skin will still take a long time (again, unless you are hashtag blessed) but at least you can look less stressed and haggard with some skincare.

Binge-watch

When you know you’re done with all the important requirements you have to do and you feel like you have more time in your hands, go and de-stress by binge-watching your favorite movie or show. Binge-watching definitely shifts your attention from college life to whatever’s happening to your favorite characters. So, grab your favorite snacks and watch. Personally, I binge-watch less stressful and more entertaining shows after an exhausting school week to cheer me up from all the stress I had (I recommend Korean variety shows like Running Man, The Return of Superman, and  Little Forest).

SLEEP

Yes, in all caps, SLEEP. In college, you are already lucky if you manage to sleep for 6 hours (8 hours is almost impossible). There are even weeks (heel weeks, as we call it) where we literally have no sleep at all and have too much caffeine in our bodies. So, get all the sleep that you can have in every free time you have as long as you’re done with all the urgent requirements. Sleep and recharge yourself in order to become more healthy and prepare yourself for the hell weeks ahead.

So, as long as you know you’re done with all the important requirements and you have some free time, enjoy and take care of yourself.

Renew

Health is wealth. Do students still know that? I guess not.

Time flies. From August, it is now November and it means, the semester is almost over. One month to go and we can finally breathe, only if the grades are good.

But since we still have to face all the requirements to pass this sem, “magsunog ng kilay” is important. If so, is there still a chance to chill?

So here’s what I do when I’m home which expresses my thought of taking a break for some time.

#1 Watching the vlogs I have subscribed on

For a while, I could forget all my worries whenever I am watching vlogs. Currently, I am addicted to watching Gonzaga sisters’ vlogs. Catherine’s channel provides constant happiness and joy. On the other hand, Celestine’s vlog gives me the motivation to be a wiser woman in the future.

#2 Watching movies

Movies and series, missed teleseryes and all. I do telebabad every friday night.

It becomes my hobby to refresh myself from a week of school works. Watching a movie or anything that could make me cheer up, motivated or even feel sadder is the kind of refresher to me.

#3 Having longeeer sleep

Sleeping is life. Guilty enough, I could only function well if I slept for about seven hours. Below seven hours, it does not feel normal to me anymore. I tend to yawn a lot. I get tired more often. So, when I get home, I make sure that even for once, I could get a lot of sleep.

#4 Satisfy cravings

Life at home is about me, myself and I. I could eat what I like. Always, cravings satisfied.

#5 A bit socializing

Again, when I am home, this is when I contact my friends and family members. Most of the time, my auntie and her son, the cutie one is present at home. Also, I sometimes meet friends and socialize.

These are some of the things that I do to refresh myself from all the school works. It helps. But at the end of the day, we still have to get on and move forward for another challenge that life will give us.

De-Stress for Success

As students, we don’t have a choice when it comes to getting stressed. We have different bodies and personalities, so we should try some different stress-reduction techniques to see what works best for us. And what I do to keep my stress in check is I:

There is clear evidence of the harmful effects of stress. So, I think that stress reduction should be part of every school’s curriculum. It’s a skill that can really help improve and maybe even save the lives of students like us. I know I still have so much to learn and experience, but for now, this is how I deal with the pressures and anxieties. These are my ways to de-stress to achieve success.
